“Possibly going against other opinions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I might be going against many reviewers opinion, however I personally believe that the Villa Il Poggiale is nicer in Summer than in Winter. Rooms are nice, high ceilings but normally furnished. Same for the bathrooms. The Spa is extremely basic even though the sauna units are new. If the sauna unit is turned off (happens often), it takes more than an hour for it to warm-up again. The bubblebath is extremely small, can hardly take 2 persons.

Breakfast is basic, options are limited. No fresh juice.

Nice classical music was played on new Year's day however the brunch started late, was organised in a haste, and again food proposal was limited.

The director at reception was however very courteous. She helped understanding the area, the nice towns to visit, do's and don'ts. She has been extremely helpful!

I was however expecting much more from the place, having read the reviews and seeing the price for the room.

Dear Sirs,

We are sorry to hear that your stay at Villa il Poggiale was not up to your expectations.
However we wish to explain you some points: Our spa is not proposed as a real spa, for this reason offers basic services and, as the jacuzzi , not very large. It has been created to offer an additional FREE service to our customers especially during the winter when the pool is closed. Usually our customers appreciate this piece of wellness after a day of sightseeing, moreover Villa il Poggiale is one of the few structures that offers this service in Chianti area. Brunch on January 1st began slightly later (11.20 am instead of 11am) to give the opportunity to the customers who had not booked this service to have regular breakfast that usuallly ends at 10am, however was always possible for everybody to eat and drink something from 8am to 14 pm enjoying food of breakfast or of brunch. The brunch included pies and homemade cakes, bread, schiacchiate, local affettati and cheeses, smoked salmon, eggs, omelets, croassaint, russian salad and many other dishes...We believe that the choice was not limited but very wide and for each type of tastes.
We really hope to welcome you again in the next future and make your holidays more enjoyable with us.
Warmest regards
Villa il Poggiale

This is a magical place. The staff are outstanding, so helpful prior to our visit and during our stay. They organised a wine tasting for us nearby and a wonderful restaurant for Christmas Day lunch. We stayed in the apartment that is in an old house just a few minutes walk from the main villa. It was ideal for us, 2 ensuite bedrooms, beautiful lounge with log fire and kitchen where we could cook our own meals. We were staying with our 2 grown up sons so had plenty of space. The breakfast in the main house was good. This is a country hotel so a car is advisable. The Chianti countryside is beautiful. We have wonderful memories and hope to return again one day.

My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights as a treat to ourselves to truly experience the Tuscan countryside as we had imagined it to be. And for the most part, it lived up to our expectations. We used this villa as our base for going out to Chianti, Sienna & Val d'Esta areas which were 20-45 minutes away by car. The car park was located in their olive grove just outside the gate of the villa & except for picking up or dropping off luggages using the gravel driveway, it was a short walk to get to the car daily. The villa is picturesque and the views & sunset at the back and side of the villa were marvelous. The breakfast buffet each morning offered quite a delicious & sumptuous selection of food and same could be said of their buffet dinners which were all homecooked. We always took a seat on the back patio for breakfast so we can enjoy the fresh morning air as we took in the Tuscan scenery & the hot air balloons that passed by. Access to the rooms required some going up and down different staircases but we didn't have to worry about carrying our luggages to/from our room. Our room was very spacious & had a rich country-style décor complete with free wifi access. The bathroom was spacious but did not have much ventilation except for a small window. You could see a bit of mould growing by the bathtub walls. For a fee, we had a chance to take up a 3-course cooking lesson in their kitchen with Annie, their Irish Italian cook and were given the recipes & a certificate to take home with us. It was a lovely experience to taste the fruit of our labour for dinner. All in all, we had a relaxing enjoyable time here and wouldn't go any other way if we have the chance to return to Tuscany.

Stayed 6 nights with a tour group and loved this old but well maintained countryside villa. Didn't know what to expect since this was our first trip to Italy but we were pleasantly surprised at how well this 600? year old villa was kept up. We loved the authentic, comfortable experience. Each room is unique and go there understanding that. The views are awesome and the property enchanting. Loved the gatti that frequented the grounds! The property, staff, food and accommodations were excellent. Not a 5 star, fussy experience but very charming and memorable in a good way. Offering positive criticism, it would be nice if the honor bar prices were a bit more reasonable. :-) Would definitely return.

Room Tip: We had a "family room", very large with a kitchen, but a bit on the dark side. Loved it bu...

It's not a 5 star hotel. Absolutely. Though it costs like one. But it's a marvelous place. Not many hotels nowadays bring us this miracle of time-travel, keeping us together with the essentials of modern civilization, like warm WC located preferably in our own chamber, and not in the corridor or outdoors.
Villa il Poggiale, the moment you cross the gateline, after you've parked your car to melt on hot Mediterranean sun under olive trees, hugs you and takes directly... almost directly to the year 1902: the time, when Mediterranean leisure traveling was the only option in the world.
It keeps this unrepeatable scent of history, its charm (together with some strong smell of a very old building, but it's OK if you can stand it), its furniture, its rules, its food.
It's better if you have a car, then you can travel around the wonderful valley Vall-di-Peza. You can go to San Casiano, to Lucca, to Sienna...
You shall get all the basic facilities modern people need here, but please don't look for the wifi, I think it has joined efforts with local ghosts and keeps wandering around the building, hiding from guests (excuse me for this strange comparison). The signal is strong only near the reception. You shall get wonderful home food. A bar in the reading hall with no barmen - you pour yourself, you pay yourself. Pure trust. Swimming pool is not to big, but it's the right size to swim with your children, having a cocktail and watching the olive and grape fields that are stretched along the whole horizon.
The stay shall be expensive. The food shall be expensive. Maybe more, than you can expect for that kind of service. But it's not the service, that you are paying for. It's the time travel!

When I found this hotel I thought we would have a comfortable and pleasant stay at Tuscany...but we did not find what we expected. We were given a room at the ground floor with a door outside of the hotel, there was also a route from the patio but I don't want to even mention the route we had to take. We went off-season, in October, the rooms were chiily but they told us they do not open heating until November. It was way too expensive for the room we stayed in.

The view of the hills & valleys spotted with olive trees and vineyards was gorgeous. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was outstanding and plentiful. I particularly liked my room on the 2nd floor with a view of the entrance courtyard. The decorating was period oriented and the rooms were large. This villa is totally restored and situated close to Florence. There is a swimming pool and patio dining. Our 6 night stay could not have been better.
