“Good, but check if a wedding is on!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

Upon arriving at this villa/hotel you will be struck by its beautiful views, grounds and the wonderful building itself, you might even think "this would be the perfect place for a wedding", you are not alone and therein lies a potential problem. This is a popular wedding venue. After careful consideration and researching lots of hotels in the area we chose to book 5 nights at Villa il Poggiale as part of our honeymoon in Italy. We received speedy confirmation from the hotel and thought no more of it until the hotel contacted us 3 and a half months before our stay to say that there was a wedding taking place at the villa, the wedding party had increased in size and was exclusive use so that we were no longer able to stay there for the final 3 nights of our booking (an isolated incident or normal hotel practice, we have no idea, make up your own mind). The hotel management was very apologetic and offered us a free upgrade to a junior suite for 2 nights and then alternative accommodation at Villa Talente near by. Given that this occurred in relatively short notice for the Tuscan countryside in high season we didn't have much alternative. The hotel itself is very nice, it ticks almost every dream Tuscan country villa box and so leaving it after only two nights was disappointing. We spoke to another couple while there who had arrived the previous weekend, also on honeymoon, when they arrived there was also a wedding on (which they didn't know about in advance) and it was suggested that they take a day trip that day as the swimming pool etc would be out of action. So why the 4*? Hotel staff were very friendly, especially Lisa and Manchello (sorry if I spelt that wrong!) who were absolutely fantastic during our cooking course and dinner, as already mentioned the grounds, views, room and hotel itself are stunning so it would be incorrect to give it any less than 4*. If you do decide to book here just make sure you check with them first if a wedding is planned for your stay and make it clear that you would like to be informed if a wedding subsequently books into the hotel after you have made your reservation. Maybe keep in mind a plan B!

Dear Sirs,

We are really sorry for not having been able to fulfill your expectations, we realize that weddings this year were a bit too...popular.

However also honeymooner are our priority …upgrade upon the availability, champagne and strawberry in the bedroom…All the guests are our priority and we always do our best for everybody.

I’m pleased that you have chosen VIP for your stay and it would be a pleasure for us to meet you here again.

This tranquil hotel provided us with gorgeous views and a relaxing stay. Both my fiance and I and the couple we were traveling with were given extremely spacious rooms (theirs had an extra living room) and a real rustic decor. The grounds were extremely well maintained and the view was picturesque. We enjoyed the provided breakfast while we sat on the patio overlooking the countryside. The pool was a good size and everyone was very welcoming. While visiting Tuscany, we stopped by the neighboring towns (Lucca, Pisa, Siena, and San Gimignano) which were a short drive away; ideal location. The only complaints I had were that the air conditioning in our room did not work all that well (eventually got the room cold) and the drainage in the shower was very slow. We would have said something but we were not in our rooms all that much. This hotel was really spectacular and I would definitely recommend it to others.
One last thing to note, the hotels in Italy do not provide Irons in each room, therefore if possible, I would bring your own.

Villa Poggiale is a quaint country villa in the Tuscan Hills. The rooms are spacious and reflect the rustic hills surrounding the property. We attended a family wedding there and it was wonderful to have all of our family staying at the hotel, eating breakfast together and celebrating love on the grounds.

Room Tip: The suites are spacious and have large bathrooms with large tubs and showers. For family gatherings...

Had planned to stay for only 3 nights. But just the sight of the hotel and the surrounding vineyards in made us 2 extra nights. Large rooms and superb service and personal. Definitely worth an other visit sometime..

My husband and I celebrated our wedding at Villa il Poggiale and absolutely loved the venue. We organised everything from overseas and only saw the villa in person a couple of days before the wedding. We loved it from the moment we got there - beautiful views, lovely rooms and very helpful staff. They were super responsive to any requests we had and were so thoughtful with small details like champagne and strawberries in our room on the evening of the wedding. We definitely recommend this venue to anyone who wants to have a memorable wedding in breathtaking surroundings, or just relax by the pool!

Il Risorgimento is complete. Garibaldi has done what was expected of him and is now a peripheral, if revered figure in the new politics of the Italian state. But the old order adapts to new circumstances with traditional resilience. Its members still collect their rents and build, extend and maintain palazzi of varying scale in every locality.
Il Poggiale is a manifestation of this continuity. It takes revolutions and invasions in its stride. As the source of wealth shifts from the land to the less tangible produce of technology and financial services, Il Poggiale opens its doors to this new global class of travellers. Nevertheless, upon arrival, it is like stepping back into another era. The long, gravel drive leads to the imposing, columned porch that runs across the width of the warm, ochre stucco-ed building. A range of tables and chairs indicate that this is an area for gaining some respite from the sun, probably in the company of something cold, soft and honeyed in a glass.
The public rooms are decorated in the country house style - patrician but inviting. Service is attentive and friendly throughout our stay. I am glad that we opted for a superior bedroom. These are located on the entrance and upper floors of the house, rather than on the lower levels near the dining rooms and breakfast terrace. Ours overlooks a small courtyard - pretty enough - and in the shade throughout the second half of the day. These cooling effects are enhanced by the generous proportions and high ceilings of the room. It is furnished in a traditional style and both the walls and ceiling are decorated with beautiful nineteenth century-based painted patterns.
Outside, the gardens are well maintained and contain a sizeable swimming pool with plenty of loungers, tables and parasol shading. The views to the west are stunning - across the heavily-wooded hills, garnished with vineyards and olive groves.
Il Poggiale is only a couple of kilometres from the town of San Casciano. However, the lure of a buffet dinner on the terrace, accompanied by the magnificent scenery, was overwhelming on both nights of our stay. The food was perfectly acceptable - fresh and plentiful - without being exceptional. The utter romanticism of the location, however, will ensure that these were evenings that will never be forgotten.

Room Tip: I would recommend the superior rooms.

This delightful traditional styled Tuscan Villa is a wonderfully welcoming retreat from the bustle of Florence. A maze of passages link a variety of interesting sitting areas and individual bedrooms. Dinner and breakfast are served on the terrace overlooking a valley studded with olive trees and vineyards and the staff are welcoming and happy to help at any opportunity. If you want to treat yourself to a little pampering and style, this is the place to do it. This was our second visit and I hope to have an opportunity again.
