“Good to be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2011

Brilliant restaurant with huge choice of Tuscan dishes.Spectacular meat antipasto and meats cooked on a huge fire in the kitchen, visible from the dining room. Good choice of desserts and wine, though we recommend the establishment's own red. Dining indoors or out on lovely terrace if weather permits.
On top of this is the villa with rooms available at ridiculously low prices for their size and facilities. Nice gardens to relax in and plenty of parking.
No breakfast - the family that runs the place needs some rest!

We have been coming to La Nina since 1998. Back then we had little money and were looking for restaurants with rooms in Tuscany. This is the best and cheapest place we ever stayed. The bedrooms are in The Villa. All rooms are large and have beautiful bathrooms - a real treat. The food at the restaurant is out of this world in a honest and slow-food of way. It is mainly meat and pasta. The family owners are very passionate about their food and wine. In all these years we have been returning to La Nina we never had a bad plate of food or glass of wine. I found it refreshing that they have not started to turn the Villa into a B&B. This place attracts guests who come for the evening meals. The restaurant is full of Italians on Friday nights. I recommend this place very highly. However, you will need a car since it is a bit out of the way. For a special evening experience out at the weekend ask for the directions to go to Fuso Carmignani's farm. A local winemaker who serves authentic rustic local cuisine on his farm. Everybody sits outside on wooden benches and tables. Wine is either red or white, their is only one 3-course menue. Many locals and young people go to this place. A real treat. I think they are only open in the evening in the summer.

Wonderful restaurant with a villa containing 9 beautiful rooms at very reasonable prices. No breakfasts but after a late night and a wonderful dinner who needs it at the expense of a bit of sleep for the extended family that runs the hotel.
Rooms are modern but traditional in style with large, well-appointed bathrooms. Satellite TV available but sitting out in the pretty garden with a good book is better.
Meals are either in the restaurant with a view through a big window of the kitchen and the huge open fire on which food is cooked, or outside on the pretty terrace. The mixed meat antipasto arrives on two trolleys with legs of animal sticking in all directions. The mixed grilled meat arrives on a skewer over a metre long. Great food and splendid style. Not surprisingly the hotel is much in demand for weddings and functions so booking is essential.

We have stayed at La Nina at least once a year since 1998. Very relaxed and calme place with a nice little garden. Perfect to read, rest and de-stress. We hope the start serving breakfast one day.
Tip: by food and snacks in the supermarket and make your own little picnic in the garden. Also; pay for the room in the evening so you can leave in the morning withouthaveing to find ssomeone in the restaurant.

La Nina is a Tuscan dream come true. Set in the hills of Tuscany near Montecalro, it is a truely cozy find. There is a restaurant attached to it that make the experience even better. Paolo, the owner met us at the main house and let us into our rooms. 15 high ceilings and huge bathtubs.....great views of the countryside.....I could go on and on. We walked over to the restaurant at about 8pm, and had a meal that will be remebered forever !
I highly recommend this little gem to anyone traveling through Italys Tuscan region.
Thanks for everything La Nina......we will be back !

  • Liked — The Location , the restaurant, the value, the comfort
  • Disliked — A small swimming pool would be a great addition !

We stumbled on this place via the internet when looking for somewhere to stay for a few days near Lucca on our drive from England to the island of Elba. What a find it turned out to be! The recently-restored villa had magnificent bedrooms with huge beds and excellent bathrooms. The view from the peaceful gardens was lovely too. If only they included breakfasts ...!! We still talk about the restaurant four years later - fantastic dishes cooked with the finest local ingredients and so many choices and courses for so little money. The quality, quantity and choice of dishes and courses was superb, as was the service (the place is run by two brothers, as far as I can recall). It was a shame the service was rather 'laid back' when it came to replacing a light bulb and trying to pay the bill at the end of our 3-day stay - but that's Tuscany, I guess!! The quality and cooking of the food was explained in great detail and with great pride and we were allowed 'tasters' where possible. The meal would have cost at least three or four times as much in London and the service and food would proabbly not have been anywhere near as good. Montecarlo is pleasant but very quiet and with very few shops. There is, however, another terrific and even cheaper restaurant/cafe there - La Terassa, I think - with such tasty food and a truly magical view over the valley day and night. You can eat in or out (on the terrace!). A car is essential to make best use of staying at Villa La Nina. We will return one day ... hopefully by then they will have a fantastic swimming pool and offer B&B! Prices have shot up since we stayed there but still excellent value.

From the moment we drove up, our stay was perfect and memorable in every way. The rooms were gorgeous with high ceilings and large shuttered windows that looked out over the countryside. We were awakened to the call of roosters in the town below and would look out at the mist hovering over the little town below. The restuarant was fantastic and the service was wonderful. We spent most evenings on their patio drinking wine and eating bread, cheese and meats we bought locally. In addition it was the most affordable place we stayed during out 2 weeks in Tuscany. Forget the big cities. Be sure to rent a car and spend a few days in the glorious area!
