“Beautiful resort..shame that the restaurants are not good enough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2011

My husband and I stayed at Castel Monastero for few nights in the very high Italian season of Ferragosto. It was the only short break that my busy season was allowing me and I was really looking forward to it. The resort is beautiful, the restauration has been done with attention to preserve the authentic beauty of the old hamlet and the result is great. The SPA is absolutely amazing with one of the best whirlpool ever seen, the Thalasso pool is also great and despite it was summer and hot we really enjoyed it. The SPA was probably the highlight of our stay. Next to the open air three pools you can spend the day just going in and out...Massages and other treatments are so ridiculously overpriced that we decided to pass.
The real embarrassing side of all the experience were the two restaurants : the Cantina is lovely space and the atmosphere is fantastic, however the menu has too many rules to follow, and it feels that you have to eat what they want you to eat ( can't have this unless you get that..that is only for two etc...). The Gordon Ramsay restaurant...well..this was a busy night, but we waited for more than an hour for our starters and the waiter said that even if the manager did not agree ...he was going to give us a free glass of prosecco to apologies ! So unprofessional and disorganised, rarely seen this in such a high end restaurant , all the staff seemed so worried and it took us more than three hours to finally have a dessert. Of course OVERPRICED. I would recommend Gordon to go and have a look before approving the use of his name next year. The most embarrassing thing of all is that despite having a great wine list ( I love Tuscan wines!) they had no idea of what they serve, the quality, the grapes and the level. and the price, so we had a couple of good deal !!...maybe a sommelier next season would help !
We also used the free tennis court and bikes, and it was all good.

“Try a little harder”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2007

We travelled with our friends to Borgo Monastero with Thomson Holidays. In all there were six of us sharing the two-bed apartment, inc. one 3-year old, and one 8-month old. We chose Borgo Monastero because we thought it would be good for the kids.

Unfortunately we had a lot of let downs. The apartments are 2.5hours drive from Pisa airport. The swimming pools are far too cold to swim in. Everything that you need in a self catering apartment is available at an extra cost. We expected to pay to hire a microwave, but you also have to pay for a kettle, a toaster when there isn't a oven/grill in the apartment and even toilet rolls when you have run out (bearing in mind we were given 3 rolls for 5 of us for a weeks holiday - they weren't going to last long!). You have to dispose of your rubbish at the local bins - we weren't allowed to leave the accommodation without taking our rubbish with us, even though the final clean up is included in your bill!

We ate at the restaurant the first night we arrived. Four adults had a two-course meal with a bottle of wine costing Euro133.00. The food was bad, for example the parma ham (when ordered with melon) could have easily resoled your shoes! The service wasn't much better either. We paid for b&b, but after the first few days stopped going down to breakfast and resorted to cereal in our room.

On the plus side, the monastero is beautiful, as are the surrounding areas.

This place would be wonderful, if they could just buck their ideas up and offer a better level of service.

“Great for families”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2007

I did lots of research looking for a family-friendly property and this seemed about the best. Wasn't disappointed - it is a nice complex very suitable for those with young children. Nice pizzeria at the bottom of the road as well. We booked airport transfers with the company called Tuscan Transfers - their website is their name and then dot com on the end. They have English drivers and provided car seats etc. They also arranged our hire car to be dropped off for us at the Borgo. All in all a great complex and a great holiday
