“Great - but it's getting worse”

Hotel Relais Borgo San Felice

I have been here four times now so hopefully my comments and experience will be useful. The last time was five years ago, so it was interesting to see what changes, if any, had happened.

Firstly ignore some of the comments about this hotel such as ‘there’s only two TV channels in English’, ‘they cook the food raw’ etc – these travellers don’t understand what ‘getting away from it all means, and what true Italian luxury is! I hate to generalise, but unless you are a well travelled US citizen, don’t come here!

The hotel and grounds are as always stunning – you just can’t get a better location. We had room 104 a deluxe junior suite with our two kids – wonderful room, suggest you ask for it.

Read all the positive points on other reviews, I’ll just give a heads up on the one problem now at this hotel – well two actually.

It’s the restaurant – this was the highlight when we used to stay in terms of service and food. The food now, new chef I believe, is not up to the standard it used to be, and is quite frankly very over priced for just above average Italian restaurant cuisine – such a shame as it used to be fantastic.

The service is now terrible – in the sense that a bottle of wine will sit for twenty minutes unopened, or that food will turn up randomly. More annoyingly is the waiters, particularly two guys, are so uninterested in making an effort/smiling/being professional you wonder why they are in the trade at all.

Basically the restaurant and service staff need a kick up the backside, because they are letting down one of the best hotel locations in Italy – and at the prices they charge (expensive) people like us will not be returning – shame!

“Fantastic hotel”

Hotel Relais Borgo San Felice

Charming, tasteful, beautiful hotel. It's an old village that has entirely been taken over by the hotel, with gravel laid down in the streets and squares, and the buildings converted into rooms. The grounds are full of flowers, and the village is surrounded by vineyards. The hotel restaurant is pretty good, but there are some first-class restaurants a short drive away.

A previous reviewer from Virginia complained that it is in the middle of nowhere, has only 2 English TV channels, no shops, and only one restaurant that doesn't overcook the meat. If that sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for, this hotel is perfect, because it won't be full of people like him.

“Vistas of Tuscany”

I've stayed at two Relais properties -- one in Umbria and the Borgo San Felice in Tuscany. What makes San Felice unique is that an ancient town has been transformed into a resort with buidings that offer hotel rooms, a bar, dining room, wine bodega, spa, pool and even a chapel. And like any good Italian town, this one is positioned at the top of a hillside which offers incredible views across the countryside.

This is an isolated spot so a car is a requirement and depending on your travel style probably only a short stay is more than enough -- to be able to say you stayed in such a place.

While we were there it was filled with Italian, European and American couples and families on holiday. The restaurant menu is limited but the host was always accomodating and would prepare whatever we asked. Probably one night at this restaurant will suffice, a night in Siena and a night in another small town.

Our room had a living area and separate bedroom -- a junior suite as I recall. The furnishings are typical Tuscan -- simple yet elegant. Loved the cermaic tiles of the bathroom -- very tasteful. We really lucked out and were able to enjoy windows wide open and cool, country fresh air throughout our stay so I can't speak to the a/c.

Oh and the wines they produce under the San Felice label are quite good. We'd buy a couple bottles, pick up snacks in town and watch the sun set from our living room.

A luxurious Tuscan experience.

I stayed here for my honeymoon. My fiance & I don't travel a great deal (about once a year), but when we do we like to stay in 4 to 5 star resorts or hotels. We stayed in Venice, Tuscany, Sorrento, & Rome on our 10 day honeymoon trip. I was the most excited about the Tuscany stop...until we got there.

If you stay at this property YOU MUST HAVE A CAR! If not, you will be bored to tears after the first day. The cab ride to Siena (the closest town) is between 30-40 euro.

My travel agent told me that it was a "midevil village". I thought, "a village will be perfect, little shops, restaurants, etc." It is not a villiage, it is a hotel comprised of many buildings. There is one pricy restaurant and it has a complimentary breakfast, which is decent. The lunch & dinner are the same every day. The menu is limited to about 10 main courses which include pigeon (yes, the bird) raviloi, wild boar, venison, & young rooster. We ordered the 80 euro steak our first night there to share and it looked like it was something that Fred Flinstone would eat. (not to mention that they insisted that we have it "medium" which was actually raw!) They were insistant on a dinner reservation even though we were the only people staying at the hotel at the time. The wait staff was very friendly however.

The second most important thing is to make sure that you stay during the week. They have a winery at the sight which is closed on the weekend. They offer tours and tastings. We did not get to see it, but the Borgo san Felice Chianti Classico Reserve is pretty good.

The buildings are old, so the rooms are ok. They have sort of a stale smell because they let people smoke in the rooms. I think we had two english tv channels: CNN & BBC (woo hoo). Bed was horrible with springs poking you in the back. The bathroom was nice with a deep, large tub and a ceiling-mounted shower head.

I live in a beautiful countryside area in VA, so I was not that impressed with Tuscany. If I had it to do over, I would have stayed on the Amalphi coast the entire trip. I was told that since it was off season no one would be there. NOT TRUE! We loved Sorrento and wish we could have stayed there longer. Rome was great as well.

I would recommend what the other writer had said. Stay in Siena and do a day trip to the wineries in the Chianti region.

We have stayed in Relais and Chateau properties many times, and with great results. The people who run this property could care less about its customers.Hauty and rude. Our room had broken a/c and the room was in the 90's.A second room was not much better as far as temperature. The bed was probably as old as the 15th century grounds. The pillows could have been chisled by Michealango into statues, they seemed to be made of marble.I would recommend staying in Sienna, and have told Relais and Chateau to delist this travesty of a hotel.
