Unfortunately we booked and paid in advance three nights in this so-called hotel in advance. Expecting a 4-Star-Hotel, we were quite confused when we saw the old, abandoned-seeming remains of something that may have been a luxury hotel many years ago, bearing the "Aloha-d-oro" logo on top of it.
Never mind, we made our way to the reception desk, where at the very first we had to pay the second part of the advance and were then shown our room.
The smell in the whole hotel was already thick enough to cut it with a knife. But when we opened our room door, we felt like opening a pharaonic grave-chamber, so ugly was the smell that waved at us. Additionally, the room temperature was considerably above the outside temperature. Opening the only window (without balcony but with nice view to the sea) did improve this situation only marginally. How lucky we were seeing an air-conditioning device in the room. Unfortunately it did not work. Assuming a malfunction, we asked at the reception, where we were given the very creative excuse that due to the hotel's love to nature, all AC's were being switched off by September 15th.
Having a look into the room, there was dirt, hair from previous guests and debris from the walls lying everywhere between the furniture (which itself looks like it is still original from the place's inauguration in 1968).
Still not completely turned off by what we already had seen, we now risked a look into the bathroom: In no accomodation in all of Sicily, and even only very few on the whole planet, we have seen such a filthy, unsavoury and decaying bathroom. Fungi everywhere, cockroaches (and I mean big ones, not just ants-like) and an uncleaned bathtub ultimately made us bury even the last remains of our expectations of a comfortable 4-Star stay in Acireale.
Next we went for dinner in the so-called "à-la-carte"-Restaurant. We were not even surprised any more to learn that the "carte" consisted of one single page of microwave-made food to choose from. Needless to say, the food was unworthy of being called Sicilian, not even Italian. To top it all, the two espresso cups we were served at the end were both still smeared with their last user's lipstick - enjoy! There was one poor guy who had to prepare all of the food as well as serving it to the guests - which was too much for one person obviously.
During the night we could hardly sleep because of the bad air, high temperatures and disgust. Having decided to leave the next morning, we wanted to speak to the manager. Her excuses and justifications is where it all became really grotesque: when taken to the room, she denied the existence of any dirt in it, including very obvious one. The cockroaches in the bath and in the bed were just to be regarded as proof of not using pest control, and as a living testimony of a nature reserve lying nearby. When we mentioned the unenjoyable "à-la-carte"-dinner consisting of mainly conserved food, she went angry and began insulting me and my wife until we left. Never have we seen such an unprofessional way of dealing with complaints in any hotel in any part of the world.
Conclusion: The worst experience on all of Sicily, and one of the worst on all continents we've been on. Friendly but poor staff that still tries to make something out of this ramshackly house, however we don't think this will save it much longer. Stay away from this place!
