“A Fantastic Week in Halkidiki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2011

We have just got back to Swansea from the Gerakina beach hotel after having the most wonderful time. Before we set off we undoubtedly checked on Trip advisor and we were worried to say the least, on arriving at the hotel after 26 hours travelling we thought our fears were true stepping off the bus.

Then... walking through the gates it all changed, we had a lovely and warm welcome, was shown to our bungalow room by the bell-boy who took care of our bags and when we lifted the shutters, looked out the window the beach was a stone throw away. do not get me wrong, the room is basic but completely adequate with air con and T.V.

We booked all inclusive and took advantage of this, the drinks and food was fantastic with a menu to suit everyone, the days meals were never the same twice and you can’t complain when a waiter is serving your drinks for you. the water is crystal clear for snorkelling and the hotel inside pool is dead at 5pm, we were the only people in there. The mattresses are hard but you can deal with that and you get clean linen and towels daily (if you put them in the bath before you set out for the day)

Generally we only met one or two English speaking families and found the majority of guests were very rude... so much so that when you say thank you to a waiter or tell the shop girls to have a nice day they stumble back in shock that you are polite, but they remember you.

All of the staff were lovely and in all we are sad to be back home, I have uploaded some photos of our stay for you too see.

A FEW TIPS!
- Do not rely on Greek busses, they are infrequent and late, I would hire a car or pay for taxi next time.
- Do not pay for water in the market, order with your meal and take it back to your room (only if you are all inclusive)
- Bring your own books and mags, 4.90 euro for a £2 mag
- Nearest cash point is a 2.20 euro bus ride away in Nea Moundania, but having said that it is a beautiful town and worth a visit.
- Cigarettes are only 3 euros for 20.

Room Tip: Book a Sea View bungalow! we stayed in room 579 and it was perfect, other rooms in our row were equa...

Disappointing on all levels. The hotel was atrocious, the mattresses were made of wood :) and could cause permanent back pain, the shower head could cause you a 3rd degree burn and you could never get the water to a tolerable for shower temperature. The hotel staff made us feel as if we had landed on another planet where tourists or foreign travelers were not welcome. The receptionists had the worst attitude and if you had a question they ignored you and pretended not to see you for at least 15 seconds before they answered mumbling under their breath. For a country who's economy relies on tourism, they must re-examine their customer service practices and -plain and simple- human interaction skills. We were nickeled and dimed for everything. We are not spoiled or demanding and have no high standards, we just didn't feel welcome. The food was awful, very low quality cafeteria food every day. Tasteless, mushy, salty and boring. The waiters were acting as if the customers were a burden and their job was beneath them. Something made me very ill and I had the worse diarrhea and stayed in bed for 2 days. Thank goodness we had travel insurance. And if you wanted to stay connected with the outside world-forget it. Using the internet (the www) if you need or want - out of the question unless you pay 1.50 euro for 1/2 hour or 4 euro per day for wifi. Really? The world wide web? What hotel doesn't offer free internet in 2011? I couldn't sleep one night and went downstairs to use the internet (had my 1.50 in hand) and since there was no one at the reception desk, I walked into the computer room and tried to send an e-mail to my doctor. Out of somewhere all sleepy and angry came out the night time receptionist and told me to get out waiving his finger at me and pointing angrily. I couldn't believe it, I offered him the 1.50 euro and he shouted "go to your room". What is this a concentration camp? I am a 44 year old woman and I love people from all cultures and all walks of life and the entire world. I believe the whole world belongs to all people and the planet should be declared the common heritage of all its inhabitants but what is it with the Greek people, why are they so unfriendly and non-hospitable? I think it is just the resort however, because we went for lunch to a small, nice restaurant and were treated o.k. We felt as if we got our taste buds back :) And then there was the guy who ruled the beach in his little beach activities area, barking orders and collecting euros for everything.
The best part of our vacation was the sun, the sea and nature around us. People and their actions were not in harmony with nature. What a pity!

If you measure cost benefit, the only benefit was that we kept our health, with no worse consequences at the end of our holliday. Apart that my wife cought a reare parasit under her skin which cause an allergy and houpless race through pharmaceutical stores which didnt have adequate medicine, after intervention on higest level in hotel we finally find a proper drug. Third day our towels and volleyball were stolen from the swimming pool. Hotel stuff kindly explained to us that we are only responsible for this. I wonder how you can relax on holiday, if you are forced to wait in a long queue for a key for sunbeds in 6 a.m, which are especially reserved for people who paid all inclusive, but most of them stay locked because all turist run away on other beaches. Hotel beach sea is full of sea grass and big roks, and water level is low, so you cannot swim at all. All in all its a pitty because only good thing is beautifull park.

the only good thing about this hotel is the property it's on, everything else is simply not worth the money they charge. we stayed in a bungalow, for 20 days, and one of the beds was this "help" bed, when u lift the mattress you see metal springs underneath, and it was very uncomfortable. the room was full of ants, big ones, and they do nothing about it. the upside is that once you open the balcony door, there is plenty of space for the kids to play, and it's all grass so you are not worried that they'll get hurt if they fall and you can sit and have your coffee and keep an eye on them at all times. i booked this hotel because it was on the beach, and was very disappointed with their beach. charging for sunbeds to hotel guests, the beach overcrowded, sea with some rocks and sea weed... so we went every day to a beach not far from the hotel, very clean, and sandy as far as you can swim-which i love, to see the bottom, and the lady is charging only for the drinks-not for the sunbeds and umbrellas, and is very kind. the village itself is quite small, and boring, and as someone else mentioned it before, do not go if you are not with small children. even my kids, age 5 and 7, were a bit bored because there is not too many things for them to see or do. the food in the hotel was horrible, same same same every day. breakfast had the difference between boiled eggs and scrambled eggs, and some awful salami which my kids wouldn't even take a look at. dinner was a bit better, but very poor choice. the staff was not too polite, sometimes even rood, and the prices in the restaurant were high. fruit was served only every 2 or 3 evenings. almost no deserts, once a week, and it was some biscuit like cake, with strawberry sauce on top... all in all, i would not advice anyone to go there, since we went to another beach every day, and ate out more than half of the time we were there. you end up spending more than you planed. general impression: not good.

Boring,we were forced to seek amusement elsewhere, like Polygiros which is also a two horse town.Room totally worn out,a danger of cutting yourself in the bath, new towels every fourth day, need I say more...
Restaurant...breakfast was the same every single day(frankfurters and boiled eggs),dinner similar(glass of mineral water 2 euro).
The good side is the clean, sandy beach, sunbeds were chained but I have found it good( If I am supposed to pay 7 euros for the day,I want to hold the key).Gardens around hotel were very tidy and nice, staff too.
Anyhow, this time we were forced to decided sudden where to go(made reservation in two days and went),but next time not for shure.
Sorry for the pictures bad resolution(I had to use cell phone photos-the normal picture resolution was too high)

We stayed one night in this hotel and moved the next morning. My husband has been here twice before and said how down its gone. We where the only English there and felt a fish out of water. No english REP no english message boards about trips etc. The room we had was in the hotel was very tatty and smelt of sewerage. The food was terrible also the beach snack bar. Chained sunbeds on beach, pool all shut off. Nothing at all outside the gates very depressing. I recomend no english people to go it was very depressing place we was glad to get out of there.
