“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

We booked for one week in July 2012 and were looking forward to our stay in the Petani Bay Hotel. According to the reviews, the place seemed like paradise.
We were immediately disappointed at our arrival. The place is far from being welcoming. The building itself an its surrounding have no charm, they lack character and the warmth that is so special to the Ionian Islands.
The owners have not at all managed to create an atmosphere of comfort (but did they even try?).
We have appreciated the cuisine of the very young but talented chef and have enjoyed the dinners on the terrace. The service is kind and attentive. It is a pity that the musical background is made of supermarket unpersonal soap music......
There is absolutely no mobile phone coverage and Internet access.
No need to say that the exorbitant price of the rooms is obviously not justified.

It is really hard to believe that the wonderful reviews have not been wriiten by friends and family of the managers...

We have spent all our holidays for 7 years now in various Greek Islands, in very simple rooms sometimes and in luxury hotels also. We adore Greece. This was so far our unique bad experience. A very bad one.

We have left after 2 nights (without compensation....) and headed to more welcoming (and much less expensive) resorts, in the beautiful South of Cephalonia.

Dear guest of Petani Bay hotel,
We would like to inform you that we take very seriously your comments, since we always try to improve ourselves in all aspects of hospitality. In addition, although our policy, the last two years, has been not to respond to the reviews written by our guests, in your case we are obliged to make an exception, because in your review there are “4 inaccuracies and a truth”. In short, we feel that future guests should be informed accordingly and in detail. Specifically,

4 INACCURACIES

1. You have stayed in our hotel only one night (August 10th), not two.
2. You have made your reservation on the 7th of July for 7 days (10-17 of August). That is, you have reserved a junior suite superior for over a month (high period). In addition, through the internet travel agency you’ve made your booking, you’ve chosen official rates which are higher than non-refundable, fully prepaid, rates. These rates, however, have the advantage of a free cancellation 14 days before arrival. In case of non-show total amount of your booking, as you know, has to be paid. From our experience and the hotel industry, future guests prefer official rates when they are not certain for the choice of the hotel they are making or when travel dates are open. Actually more than 50% cancel their reservations under these official rates. Probably, you were not certain whether you want to visit our hotel.
3. When you arrived at the hotel, you refused any kind of assistance even the welcome drink which we offer to all guests arriving at the hotel. You wanted to relax to your suite, because you felt tired and dizzy. When we suggested offering an aspirin or calling a doctor, your husband said that you were tired from the trip in Kefalonia, you refused again. That same night, however, you had, as your recall, a nice dinner at the hotel.
4. The next morning, through your husband again, you’ve said that you were unable to use your mobile phone, even though it is clear on the webpage when you’ve made your booking, that there is no mobile connectivity in our hotel. If you recall, we replied that you can use either the phone from your suite or the Wi-Fi internet connection. You refused and said that your mobile was free and that using our phone will cost you some money. We suggested, then, that all phones would be free, in that case. You refused, once again. All in all, you’ve then said that you wanted to leave the hotel. We agreed, but you refused to pay the whole amount of your stay, as the entire hotel industry requires and even though you knew that this was the policy of the hotel and the internet travel agency. Finally, we’ve settled the bill with you paying half of your accommodation, instead of your whole stay plus a free dinner you had the previous night, which your husband accepted right away.

A TRUTH

Yes, indeed, we are very fortunate and honored on the fact that we’ve made so many friends, over the past three years, not family, from all over the world. People who really appreciate what Petani Bay Hotel has to offer: peace and quiet, total relaxation, a unique environment and accommodation, high quality meals, a magnificent view and an astonishing sunset. Above all our hospitality and the feeling that one day they will return “back home”.

We are really sorry that you didn’t feel this way.

Sincerely,

John Iordanidis

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

We have recently returned from a 1 week stay at Petani Bay Hotel. Arriving by easyjet the airport is approx 1 hr drive from the hotel. My husband had rented a jimmy jeep from 'National' rental online a couple of weeks before our trip and we were both disappointed to be told at the airport that a jeep wasn't available for us, - instead we were given the keys to something we referred to as "the Tank" !! - we had wanted to re-live our youth and dart around the cliff edges in our open top jeep listening to Zorba the Greek on the CD player, - but alas this didn't happen until the third day, - when National arrived at the Hotel to replace the Tank with our little Jeep (which leaked, - but we loved it!) - thank you National!

We had followed signs to Petani Bay Hotel, without these I don't think there would have been any chance of us finding it ! - We passed beautiful scenery en-route, and took a little dirt track from the main lane which seemed to lead to the parking area for the hotel. After managing to avoid several goats, chickens, a donkey and 2 rabbits we parked the car and headed for the hotel reception ............. "Wow!" The hotel is set on a hillside above the stunning Petani Bay. The uninterrupted view is incredible. Petani Bay Hotel seems to be a small family run, very friendly place. We stepped into the Reception to be greeted by John and Voula, and Sandy (? I think) their lovely little dog. We were made to feel very welcome immediately - and given a glass of wine each which was very very welcome as we had left home at 1am to get there !!

We were shown to our room, which was very spacious, clean & provided everything you could wish for. We had noticed before booking other reviews had mentioned 'no kettle', - which possibly is an "english" thing!? - so we had packed a travel kettle! and would suggest you do the same if this is important to you :-)

The room layout is very well designed, with a small kitchenette area, table & 4 chairs, sofa, dressing table, wardrobe etc... ensuite with fab shower.

Doors from the room lead out onto our balcony, where there were 2 chairs & a table thankfully just big enough for a bottle of Metaxa & 2 glasses !! The view was lovely, and most evenings we sat & watched the sunset over the bay.

The staff are very friendly, - a big thank you and "Hello" goes out to "Eleanor" who was always around, smiling & asking how your day had been.

The breakfasts were very relaxed, self serve from the buffet, & as much to eat and drink as you would want.

We both fell asleep on the first day beside the pool, - heaven! The hotel was very quiet during our stay, - not many other guests around - and this seemed to be the way things were in general on the island, (8th Sept - 1 week) - a perfect time to visit if you need to chill out & relax in peace & quiet !

We ate a couple of times in the evening at the hotel, each time the service & food was very good. It was also very nice to have the banter with John who was also dining at the next table, - a really friendly guy, so obviously proud of his wonderful hotel - and living the dream! The nearest little shop for provisions (ie. Metaxa or Robola wine!) seemed to be in Vilatoria, - where a lovely elderly greek man sits outside his shop waiting for you! - the shop is crammed with everything you could wish for and so full of character. Sign language and a lot of pointing did the trick, and my husband happily stood on a chair to get things down the rickerty top shelf!

The Island itself is lovely, with stunning views around every corner. We had watched "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" before we went, - but it meant so much more to us when we returned home to watch it again! - the island and it's people have had devastation in the past, leaving behind such amazing and beautiful family homes now in ruins, - yet they continue to be so friendly & happy .. a lesson to us all!

There were horrendous storms, thunder, lightening & rain the last 2 days of our holiday - we were quite happy by then to just chill out & watch films, etc... In the reception area there are many DVDs to choose from, - don't be put off by the greek covers, - all of the one's we borrowed were in English, - even a very funny episode of Top Gear!

We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone we know visiting Cephalonia, and would like to thank John, Voula and their staff for having made our stay very enjoyable.

This hotel was everything we hoped it would be. We arrived having just spent six days in Fiskardo at the Emelisse Art Hotel (supposedly the most expensive and best hotel on the Island) and I am so glad we ended our holiday at Petani Bay. Firstly, the location is remote and provides one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. All rooms are sea facing and the infinity pool overlooks the bay. All around you are mountains and the only sounds are of the goat bells and the crickets. You cannot fail to relax here. As it's a small hotel, you get to know all the staff and they are what make this place extra special. As soon as we arrived, we were introduced to Oleg (the amazing cocktail master) and Helena (the super friendly waitress) by the ever lovely host, John. They simply couldn't do enough for you and you were always made to feel extra special. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and when we arrived we had been given a bunch of flowers and a bottle of fizz. Our room was three times the size of the one we had in our previous hotel and was cheaper, and they were decorated to a very, very high standard. The bed was super squishy and I was worried it wouldn't be very comfortable as I normally need quite a firm mattress for my back, but I actually slept so well I had no pain for my entire stay (unheard of for me). The sunsets were amazing and the food was fantastic - we don't normally like eating in the same place but we were happy to eat here every night of our five night stay. Personally, we found the prices very reasonable in comparison to other four star hotels we have stayed in. We simply cannot recommend this place enough. Full of charm, warmth and integrity, and the entire experience surpassed our expectations.

Room Tip: I imagine all the rooms are of a high quality and they all have sea views, but it was nice having a...

This hotel is excellent. Large, clean, nicely appointed rooms with rainfall showers and all have sea-facing balconies. Beautiful infinity pool and great pool bar which is perfect to have cocktails whilst watching spectacular sunsets. Decent breakfasts and the staff are just brilliant, particularly hostess Voula who really does make the place with her warmth and charm. Perhaps the drinks and food are a little too expensive but it's such a lovely place that you don't really care. I'd highly recommend!

My husband chose this hotel for our honeymoon from reading the amazing reviews about it on the internet. At first he was a bit sceptical...because it all sounded too good to be true. When we got there it was truly amazing. The staff were so friendly and the hostess Voula, she is really nice and very helpful. The view out to the bay is just breathtaking during sunset. The food is really really good, very authentic Greek food. Breakfast was included in our room so we had a full lovely one each morning. The food was so is good and plentiful that we sometimes go without lunch because we are still full from the breakfast. The swimming pool is lovely. So is the jacuzzi especially for watching the sun set. The barman Oleg is very nice and friendly and makes amazing cocktails. The staff there are all friendly and helpful and Voula and John go out of their way to make everyone feel special.
What I loved most about it is that it is not your usual very busy tourist kind of hotel with so many people. You will never feel overcrowded and the small number of guests means everyone gets personal attention when needed.
One advice. Hire a car when going there. Public transport is not a common thing there and with transport you can visit other bays like Mirtos, Sami and Fiskarlo. We had a memorable honeymoon and I will higly recommend it to everyone intending to visit Kefalonia!

Mr and Mrs Macey

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor overlooking the bay are the best for watching the sunset.

Voula, the warm and welcoming owner of Petani Bay, is worth the visit to the hotel itself. We arrived on a late flight to the island, and after missing a few turns here and there (the Kefalonians don't seem too keen on road signs, nor do the maps show all the roads!), we were treated to Voula's embrace, a perfect dinner, even though the kitchen was closed, and the promise of more help in the morning to plan our excursions. While many of the guests enjoyed the nice pool and the idyllic beach of Petani Bay, we explored the island with Voula's help. Every spot she suggested-- drives through mountains covered in wild thyme and oregano overlooking the island of Ithaka, isolated swimming spots, monasteries, wineries, little villages--was a treat. The island is quite unspoiled, but be sure to buy the best map you can find. (We used Greekstones car rental, and they were a first-rate outfit, too.) We dined at night on the lovely terrace overlooking the bay: the food was very nice, and we were told by the charming waitress, Kelly, that if we wanted fish, she would order it the next day so it would be fresh. The room was almost cavernous with a great bathroom and balcony overlooking the water; the clientele was mostly European, all very happy to be in a place that felt like visiting your long lost relatives. In fact, saying good-bye to Voula was like parting from a dear friend. Take a look at Nicholas Kristoff's video of the Paliki Peninsula (the part of Kefalonia where Petani Bay Hotel is situated) in search of Odysseus's Ithaca, which some scholars believe is actually part of Kefalonia, and you will see find another reason to enjoy the magic of the island.
