“Five Star Hotel with School Dinners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2010

Rather than complain or say how fantastic the hotel is I thought I'd start by giving potential customers an idea of what the location is like. XI beach is 5 minutes walk away, it's great. Clean (apart from the odd cigarette ends) brown sand and clear water. Plenty of sun beds at the peak of holiday season costing 7euro for two and parasol. On foot the only other amenities you can reach are a small shop with a lonely looking man outside selling not very much and another hotel which sells things like sun cream, hats etc (20euro a bottle of suncream - £5 tesco over here!) Couple of taverna/restaurants on XI beach where nothing happens at nights, which is the locations main issue, no evening entertainment except what the neighbouring hotel has on offer, which is a terrible animation team.

Apollonia Hotel is clean, the rooms are great except the beds. Bear in mind that this is a five star hotel, i.e. the best of the best, the cream of the crop - 2 single beds pushed together and rather than a set of double bed sheets etc to try and disguise it as a double bed they go for single sheets, not great for . . . . . romance/cuddles.

Food - school dinners is the description that jumps to mind. Now this will sound a little harsh if you have stayed there but bear in mind whilst considering this description that this hotel is 5 star! The food has two elements to it, cold and hot buffet items. The cold stuff is first class but repetative, exactly (almost) the same choice every night, tomatoes, peppers, feta cheese, salad, bread - all very tasty but hard to stomach after three nights of it. The hot stuff ranges from chips, little skewers of meat, sloppy mash, pasta with olive oil, cheesy pastry thing. Pretty basic food that i'd expect in get in a hotel where I was staying purely to sleep on a teenage clubbing holiday. Vegetarian option is either eat the cold food or enjoy another plate of mushroom risotto with your chips! Breakfast is much better than evening meal. Another thing about the hot food is guy serving it would seem rather reluctant to fill your plate with it, seemed as though he'd rather die than fill you up.

Restuarant Staff - fantastic! Those girls work like crazy. They are there for breakfast which is available from 7.30 until after 10.00 and are there again at night from 7.30 until midnight, 7 days a week! Rather them than me! Everybody in these reviews talks about how wonderful george is. George's role appears to be to wander around the restaurant socialising with guests and complaining at the girls for not working hard enough. Give them a break! Watch at the tray loads of stuff those girls lift around, no health and safety in Kefalonia! Ageliki shone for us, being really friendly and efficient every night, thank you! I wish I had other names, there was another girl with really blonde hair with a flower in it that was also great. Yeah George is friendly but he doesnt have to lift a finger generally, i could do his job :)

Now as I look back I appear to have been very negative about the rooms and the food, do not let this put you off going to this hotel these are just things to bear in mind. If you are used to five star treatment (which I am not) and expect gordon ramsey cuisine, it's not here. There isn't much option for dining elsewhere unless you hire transport or pay for taxis so you will be eating here most nights, my only other gripe was the beds, something i'd expect to find in a cheap b&b.

Weather was tremendous, 30-40 all week. Pool was great, there was !ALWAYS! spare sunbeds, none of this reserving them all with towels. Alcohol was expensive, cheap local beer was 3.50 euro at the hotel, watching animation across at the other hotel an JD and coke and a gin and tonic was 11euros! yup, I had a nasty pain in the wallet too!

Lovely quiet relaxing holiday experience. If you can sit by the pool/beach everyday then this is your holiday, book it now but if you must have entertainment in the evening that you can walk to you may want to consider your options.

We have had a lovely time on our honeymoon in Kefalonia, Thomsons managed to remember it was our honeymoon when we got there althought the hotel did not seem to know as there was not little token of congratulations, which doesn't matter but would have been nice, a congratulatory bag of crisps or something even? haha!

Hire a car when you're there, best way to see things. We went to the Mellasani Lake (was a bit disappointed, very small) and the Drogerati Caves (much better) which were easy to get to. We popped along to Myrtos Beach which is absolutely beautiful, white sand (pebbly) and turquoise water (7.50 euro for beds).

What else do you need to know? emm nice little ferry journey from Agostolli to Lixouri, Eat a Kefalonian meat pie, Alfa beer tastes alright, there's a supermarket by the petrol stations between the hotel and lixouri (you'll find wine 10euro cheaper than hotel prices), use the special clay on XI beach and cover yourself in it (ask your rep about it), watch if you hire a car, some of the roads are like monaco!, enjoy your holiday!!!

Me and my husband, with another couple and their two young children, visited the hotel at the mid of august which is high season for the island. The rooms were very big and clean with all the amenities. All the people working in the hotel were great , the garden is beautiful even though it is the first year and some of the trees are very small, I think in a couple of years the garden will be a paradise in a hotel with greek "color" and hospitality and international service.
The buffet was huge and many different dishes and well cooked.
The playground for children it is nice, but they can enlarge the playground for "big children".
The mini bar is unacceptable expensive and very small as the capacity is only 5 litres , in a island that local tab water can be tolerate only from the local people.
Another thing was the nearest beach wich is 5min by foot and attracts many people from the island and it is very noisy, if you want to relax in the beach and not staying at the hotel.

One of the best summer hotel I have ever visited. Excellent prices for a five star hotel, fantastic breakfast and dinner, very clean and comfortable rooms, friendly staff. It is located 300 meters from a wonderful sunny beach (Xi). I hope that next year the directors will take care for more kid's activites, especially at the pool and outside the building
