“Charming old hotel on the Rhine River”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

Wonderful old hotel on the Rhine River, great view. We stayed in the main hotel and the room was very large, the bathroom was huge, everything was clean, the bed comfortable. The staircase was awesome. Yes, it was decorated as 'old', but I find that desirable in a hotel established in 1628. The breakfast was traditional German, and very good. We were there in October 2012.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the main hotel.

The room was noisy - towards a busy big road - Sleeping even with earplugs was difficult.
The room was an o.k size, and despite being renovated, felt grubby, not looked after.
Food in the restaurant was good.

Room Tip: Avoid the annex.

This hotel, which was established in 1628, is old, rustic and lacking in up-to-date amenities. The bathroom is small and was most likely added to the rooms many years ago. The hotel is located along the Rhine River and on the busy street, Rheinalle. However, the proximity and easy accessibility to the Frankfurt Airport (38 km) makes this hotel and the small, quaint town of Oestrich-Winkel somewhat desirable. I stayed in the hotel's building across the street which was getting a fresh coat of paint inside. Therefore, the rooms were priced a lot lower. I'm not sure if I will stay here again. However, the town is worth another visit.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back--away from the road.

We were very disappointed by this stay. The B&B in the Gästehaus for 78€ is a rip-off. The rooms are basic, old-fashioned, so is the dining and breakfast area. Germany has lots of nice, designy and good-priced hotels. This one is the opposite. The website does not reflect reality at all! I had a bad feeling when the hotel asked me to reconfirm my booking two days before arrival, when I had booked three months in advance...
All in all, not recommended!

Similar experience to others above... Rooms were uncomfortable, outdated and the bathrooms haven't been updated in decades.

The Hotel Schwan is the nastiest, most uncomfortable place you can imagine. While originally booked in the "four star" main house, upon arrival, I was given a room in the "not rated" guest house next door, and it was the worst experience of my entire trip. I was told that I could not be moved to the main house, which I had reserved, and the staff turned extremely unpleasant when I complained. The guesthouse room was worse than a youth hostel, was filthy, had not been updated since the 1970s, had a squeaky, broken 4" thick mattress, yellow foam in the bottom of the shower, broken bubble gum pink tiles, gray, industrial carpet, scratchy sheets and towels, yellow stained walls and curtains... It was so bad that I could not sleep at all and did not shower in the bathroom. Not what you want in a hotel!

  • Disliked — Everything! The whole place was a disaster!

We stayed here for two nights to attend a wedding in the area. The village is charming, as are the neighboring villages and the Rheingau generally. Very old, very well-preserved, some of the best white wine around. The Hotel is also old and staying there, you get an idea of what life would've been like in years past. Our room was on the very top floor and quite spacious. It was a suite with a separate sitting area, desk, table and small TV. We had a nice view of the Rhine (it flows right past the hotel) from our little window. The bathroom was also large. Cons: it did get hot and stuffy during the day when it was sunny, and we could hear traffic racing by on B42, which runs in front of the hotel. The room was very clean, but the decor and furniture--although still in good shape-- haven't been updated since the 1950's or 60's, I would guess. No shower, just a hand-held shower hose and nozzle in the bath tub. The breakfast buffet was great, and the menu was filled with regional specialties. Service was good and the staff were pleasant.

  • Liked — location in a beautiful and historic region
