“Beautiful and Family Friendly - WOW!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

We booked and arrived on Short notice and were greeted personally at the front door by Christoph. We were given the Grand tour and made to feel welcome immediately, there was even a table set for us in the Restaurant! We had intended on staying only one night though due to the personal attention shown to us by Christoph and Katharina with their expert local advice we opted to stay a further night to enable us to look around.
We were given the family room which suited perfectly with our two children travelling. The rooms are well appointed and the Beds comfortable. The Bathroom was immaculately kept and complete with modern conveniences. Breakfast and Dinner were well presented and full of local charm.
Overall an experience that we highly recommend and will certainly come back for.

The Kolmenhof Guesthouse is a family run operation, truly Mom and Pop. The hosts, Christoph and Katharina, are really nice and welcoming. They also speak fluent English, a major plus for us. Katharina was also careful to make sure we filled out a visitor card that gave us discounts or free entry to many local area attractions.

The hotel is up in the hills, accessible via some narrow, windy roads. There's lots of fresh air and the added benefit, for the geography geek, of being at THE headwaters for one of the two rivers that form to create the Danube. Apparently, don't believe Donaushingen, the Donauquelle at Martin's church is the real deal.

The place is clean and quaint. It's a great place to stay if you want to get away in the Black Forest but still want to be within driving distance of many of the southern Black Forest attractions. I think it would also be a great place for families as they have a playroom for little kids. The price is budget level. They serve breakfast on site for a little bit more. They also serve lunch and dinner at the restaurant portion of the site. I would especially recommend this place for someone who wanted to do a lot of hiking (and I would guess cross country skiing) in this area, which is very pretty.

This place probably won't suit you if you like a more luxurious place and/or a place with more amenities. We had really poor phone service and the on site internet access is via satellite, and almost completely unusable. If you want to do business on the go, rule this place out. The local towns aren't any better for internet access so you can't really bite the bullet at the Kolmenhof but get your internet connection close by; trust me, we tried.

If you want bucolic and remote, this could be your place.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that is on the side away from the road so you can avoid the noise and so you could...

We stayed at the Gasthaus Kolmenhof for two nights during a trip to the Black Forest region. It was the best quality "hotel" that we stayed at during two weeks. We booked the family room as we were traveling with our 24 year old and 15 year old. The room was very clean and well maintained. We used the downstairs livingroom to watch a movie one night which was nice. We ate breakfast and dinner twice while at the hotel and the food was outstanding. The waitress in the evening was bilingual and was very helpful in assisting us. She told us about a hiking trail right by the hotel and we had a marvelous walk. If you hike, be watching out for a huge rock formation to the right of the trail. It is amazing. The Internet is 1 Euro an hour, and it is fast and reliable. Our beds were very comfortable, but our son is almost 6 feet tall and the bunk bed was a little short. Our bathroom was very nice and modern. We had a large tub/shower which would be terrific for those who like to get into a tub. The bunk bed room has a door so each room has some privacy. Each room also has its own television. The entire hotel was very clean, beautifully appointed, and well maintained. We did visit the sauna/hot tub area, but we did not use it. The hot tub is made for an individual to sit in it--it is not a pool.

Room Tip: Groups of four should definitely ask for the family room.

This gasthof is a few km outside of Furtwangen, at the end of a very rural road. Therefore, it is totally quiet and secluded. Nearby is a source (*the* source?) of the Danube river. There are also many hiking trails, and I think the x-c skiing would be very good.

The rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable. The restaurant is of course pretty basic but in my opinion the food is excellent.

All the staff are friendly and helpful.

If you are looking for a rural experience in the Black Forest, I don't think you could do any better.

Rooms were basic, not modern nor lately renovated, but still clean and comfortable. Beds could have been better. Breakfast was alright.
Owners are very nice and helpful, and so is the rest of the stuff.
For families - especially with young children - I think this is a good choice. Also for anyone who's looking for a simple warm place, in the middle of a great nature. If you'd like to get some spoiling vacation, I'm not sure this would be you best choice. We were 2 families with 4 children (1, 7, 8, 10 year old) and enjoyed.
