“Enjoyable stay, but eat elsewhere.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2010

Spent three nights here in early Oct 2009. We had a nice room overlooking the harbour. The weather was beautiful and the resort was not too crowded. The only disappointment was the hotel restaurant which was extremely expensive for the average quality food we were served ... presentation at the expense of the quality of the ingredients and cuisine. I reckon the mark-up on the wine was about 500%. Once was enough. Having said that, the restaurant was busy throughout our stay. However, we found a great little cafe right on the quay side that served (with enthusiasm) wonderful seafood and salads at what felt like a third of the cost of the meal at the Hotel de la Tour.

Oh, if you stay here, check your bill carefully!

And only go into Marseille if you are prepared to be robbed. Do not, I repeat do not, believe anything you read about the city having cleaned up it's act!!!

We didn't expect luxury at the Hotel de la Tour, having read plenty of reviews. The location (overlooking the port) and the restaurant's reputation for fish were the main attractions.
Sure enough, the situation was delightful - like being on a boat. Nothing else positive to report. A nasty smell of stale fish overlaid with cheap air freshener hung about the hall and stairs. The cheap, scuffed furniture in our room would have been disappointing in a student hostel. And the distant, bored staff looked as if they couldn't care less about their guests.
Last straw? The renowned fish restaurant was closed on both nights (a Tuesday and Wednesday in high summer!). Although I'd explained by email when booking that we would definitely want to eat there one night at least, nobody thought to check this out at the time.
So no, we won't be back. The whole place needs a serious shake-up.

The worst hotel we've ever stayed at... On arrival we were told that our reserved room was unavailable and we were taken to a top floor room (no lift) in exchange. On opening the door, a powerful aroma of stale sweat hit us and the hotel receptionist said she would bring us an air freshener to mask the smell!! We entered the room and the interior was incredibly drab, dirty and out-of-date, there was grime on the walls, skirting and ceiling tiles. The bathroom was old and dirty with tiles falling off the bath. The toilet roll dispenser was the type used in pub toilets. The bed was uncomfortable with a mattress that sank in the middle and only 2 very thin pillows. All the furniture was old and worn and the room had not been decorated for a very long time. In fact, the whole hotel looked as though it had been furnished from a 1980s car boot sale and has not been updated for at least 15 years. Also, there is a big dog that ads to the horrible odour as you walk into the reception. We were also looking for a hotel with restaurant but the restaurant was closed Tuesday and Wednesday - the days we booked to stay.

Do not stay in this hotel, the brochure and website are a con, we asked to have a room as per the brochure, they laughed and said that only 1 room that was decorated in a modern style and they could not be expected to decorate all the 25 rooms the same.

We refused to pay the 120eur for the night as the room was incredibly poor quality and we had a terrible night's sleep. The only good thing about the room was the view of the harbour. We had such a bad experience that we left Sanary Sur Mer the next morning.

We stayed here on our way to Les Baux and were pleasantly surprised. The location of the hotel is excellent - right down by the harbour - and our room (number 17) overlooked it all. The bathroom (same size as the small-ish room) also overlooked the harbour, creating a wonderful experience when lying in the bathtub! Parking is a bit difficult but for 10 Euro per night the hotel offers the use of a garage close by. The rooms were simply furnished but perfectly adequate and clean. Sanary itself offers a lot of shopping and culture (it was the main hub in the network of German exile writers and composers during the 1930s). Following the recommendation of the wonderful concierge, we also has a great meal locally where we were served fish we had in fact seen being carried from the harbour to the restaurant just hours before. All in all, an experience not to be missed.

I saw that this hotel was a 2 star and was and was a bit nervous because I was staying for a few nights.
To start out positive: The hotel is in an awesome location.

The room that I had, left much to be desired. I wasn’t sure if it was the 100 square foot bedroom, or the 4.5 square foot shower that I didn’t like.
Taking a shower was hell. First really cold water, then super hot. The size of the shower didn’t leave for much room to get out of the way.

In the morning, I left the Privacy sign on the door because I had some valuable items in the room and I wanted to minimize the number of people in the room. It was COMPLETELY ignored every day.

The reception staff speaks English which was a big plus. However, the waitresses at the restaurant rude, didn’t speak English, and really didn’t communicate at all. Maybe the lack of communication made me feel this way... but I am the guest and they should go out of their way, right?

I wouldn’t recommend this hotel or area around the hotel for more than a 1-2 day visit.

This hotel is not exactly a hostel, but its far from a Marriott.

I was immediately impressed by the view from my room. The hotel is only 5 metres from the beautiful harbour, so to get to my room, tired after a days train travel, and to open the window to a beautiful Mediterranean sunset over the harbour, listen to the bells on the boat masts - superb. The staff were wonderful, thankfully spoke enough english and were gracious to tolerate my few badly spoken french words.. always helpful and polite. This hotel is in the heart of Sanary sur Mer. Walk out the front door, cross the street to cafes, bars, markets ... Clean, comfortable, well-priced rooms, and a harbourview restaurant downstairs. Stay here - and don't miss the 11th century tower that the hotel is built around...
