“Calm quiet and relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

We had 3 wonderful nights here. The staff were very helpful, and had very good English.
It is a bit nerve-wracking negotiating the driveway, but its worth it. The swimming pool is unique and a must-do; some of the fitness equipment could do with some maintenance ( but really who needs to do exercise on holiday?!). It's an easy 10min walk to the village which has 2 nice restaurants, and Samur is only 10min drive North. A great base for exploring the area.

This is a brilliant little hotel, personal and individual. Helpful staff who made us very welcome. There is a very narrow entrance, you begin to think like we did that the car, ours is a big 4x4, won't go through the gap in the rock. It did and there was ample space to turn round. Some rooms are inside the rock as is the pool. Cars are also parked under a huge cavernous opening. Very surreal place. When you enter the hotel the vista opens up in front of you. The lovely patio area is a sun trap and it is great for breakfast or brunch, which is an option. The rooms are comfortable with good beds and flamboyant decor. We would return to this hotel as it is handy for exploring the Loire valley.

We stayed here last week for three nights, in the Johann de Witt room. It had a huge bathroom and a mezzanine floor with a study; it was tastefully decorated and very clean. The continental breakfast was served in a lovely room. The pool, in a little cave, was great fun! The village has a lot to offer; a great restaurant called L'Helianthe and a series of art/craft workshops selling beautiful things. We used it as base for exploring the local area - there's lots to see and do - highly recommended!

Room Tip: The 'troglodyte' rooms are fascinating - ours was from 1667 and was luxurious - it was room...

Stayed two nights in the unique troglodyte room, described in another review. We didn't think the humidity was a problem unless you don't like a slight spa-like smell in the room. Big plus was the underfloor heating in the room, which helped counter the cold conditions. The cave-like room is more like a suite with two nice balconies and the most interesting hotel bathroom I've ever seen. There's a mushroom farm within walking distance, and the nearby villahe, also a ten minute walk away has many interesting artist studios and restaurants like the already mentioned Bistroglo, which offers fabulous local. Only thing: Skip the hotel breakfast which is totally overpriced.

Room Tip: The troglodyte room!

The hotel is unusual, and perhaps not for everyone. That is its charm- the owners are welcoming and extremely helpful in finding restaurants that are excellent- the swimming pool in the cliffside- called troglodyte- is amazing. We booked late, so we were not able to get one of the troglodyte rooms. That is our only regret-

My wife and I stayed for two nights in the "Troglodyte Room" of the Hotel Demeure de la Vignole in Turquant on our way to the South of France after landing in Paris. The Hotel and surroundings are really amazing. The Hotel and the referenced room actually share the walls of a 35000 year old pre history villa. The room had two floors with a bathroom and sitting area on the first floor and the bedroom and walk out terrace on the second floor. Access to the second floor was via a spiral staircase. The room was first class all the way with the possible exception of the extremely high humidity caused by sharing the ancient limestone walls. It was ok for one day and night but the humidity got old by the second night. A great treat is the restaurant. After touring the World Mushroom Museum in the area, the chef prepared a special mushroom menu for my wife which she greatly enjoyed. Excellent food, service, and ambiance in this unique area of France.
