“treated like a lord and a dame”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2010

We chose Les Courlis as accommodation in the charming city of Saint Valery en Caux. With a two year old toddler we stayed there six days in the room ‘L'Albatros’. Les Courlis showed an excellent base for touring and discovering the beautiful Pays de Caux.

THE HOST AND HOSTESS
Christophe and Marie were excellent hosts in the carefully and tastefully decorated historic house. The family lives in the house.
Christophe and Marie are always there for you. We had ‘golden tips’ tailored to the wishes and needs of our company. When we went to a lake, then we got some bread to feed the ducks. The hosts were superb in dealing with small children. They offered us some toys and a bottle warmer.

THE HOUSE
Les Courlis is a beautiful and spacious old mansion, it could be called a manor. With care and taste, the hosts collected authentic elements to decorate the house in respect of the heritage (a fellow guest was amazed that it still had all the real authentic locks). Unlike many rental houses or bed and breakfast, here the guest rooms are very solid, and beautifully decorated and finished with antiques. By the way, that was no problem for our little son.

RESPONSE TO OTHER POST
The mystery of the sound of the pipes: this old house full of charm was successfully adapted to contemporary needs and standards. When you flush the toilet, you hear it in the pipes. It bothers not at all. Once, when the toilet reservoir had not fully been emptied, we kept hearing the pipes because there was some water dripping. This was solved completely by flushing once. No worries!

THE ROOM
L'Albatros is an incredibly spacious room, as you see on the website, with a beautiful and spacious bathroom. The room has a wooden floor. The contemporary bathroom is finished with tiles. For our son, we got a magnificent antique bed. There is ample storage space with a beautiful old cupboard in the room and a fitted wardrobe in the bathroom.
Furthermore, L'Albatros has an excellent double bed on which you can lay your head nicely if you want to read some more. The room has an armchair and a small round table with two chairs. In the corner stood a suitcase full of beautiful antique dolls that collectors would offer a lot of money for. In l’ Albatros, one can sleep soundly in absolute sacred silence, near the city centre.

THE BREAKFAST
If you're going to have breakfast, you’ll feel like a knight, lord or lady in a castle. The breakfast room is a wonderful cozy dining hall. There will never be more than ten people at the table. Every day, the delicious bread is self-baked with quality ingredients. You get a jar of delicious homemade yogurt, and many sorts of homemade jam, which really offers something for everyone. Then orange juice and hot beverage of your choice. The table linen is always remarkably complete, so the table always looks nice. Whether Marie, Christophe or one of their sympathetic children served at the table, breakfast was always a fun and relaxed time to look forward to.

THE PRICE
This guest house uses correct prices and offered us an unforgettable holiday. For his entire stay, our son had to pay nothing.

Fantastic charming house, with 4 or 5 guest rooms overlooking the harbour. The room was confortable and spacious. St Valery itself is a wonderful little seaside town with lots of good places to eat and Norman cider to drink!

The breakfast with homemade jams and bread and yoghurt was very good but the only problem was the opinionated owner Christophe who sat with guests at breakfast and inflicted his own opinions on them, quite forcefully at times, banging his fist on the table, often causing embarassment among guests. This did not ruin our stay, as the house and Christophe's wife Marie was charming, but unfortunately if we returned to St Valery, we would look at staying elsewhere.

You will find a really warm welcome from Christophe and Marie. We spent an enjoyable 4 days at Les Courlis and enjoyed home made bread, jams and yoghurts. The room was clean and comfortable with a spectacular view over the harbour. We certainly would go back again.

My husband and I intially wondered if we had made the right choice but we had a wonderful 2 nights in Saint Valerie en Caux. The hosts were a genuine couple who made us feel very welcome. One morning we shared breakfast in a lovely dineing room with 2 other couples who were wonderful with us in our lack of french. The next morning a gorgeous table set for 2. Home made treats were served. The fishing village was quaint and lovely to walk through. we visited the Australian War memorial from here.
would return.

We had the pleasure to stay with Christophe and Marie in their gorgeous home. The location of the home is ideal for anyone wanting to start their exploration of Normandy. We found it a great destination for stopping between Dieppe and Etretat and then travelling further west to the D-Day beaches. The house is easy to find in the quaint town of Saint Valery en Caux. The room and the rest of the house was elegantly designed and charming. We truely loved the Albatros room and would recommend it to anyone. The breakfast was ample and the selection of homemade jams was impressive. Most important was the warmth of Christophe and Marie. Christophe takes pride in his region and helped us plan out an itinery for the next several days. His recommendations were put to good use. Marie uses humour and experience for consulting on the local restaurant scene. Do not leave for dinner without consulting with her on where to eat.
