We recently spent one night at the hotel and were very pleased on all fronts. We were greeted very warmly at the front desk and delighted to find that the hotel really was right next to the ruins of the Abbey. The hotel clearly is an older property, decorated in a more traditional, perhaps old-fashioned way, but it feels historic and comfortable. The ground floor wraps around a garden, which provides a lovely view while eating breakfast.
Our room was very large (I think I reserved a "superior" room) and overlooked the garden so it was very quiet (which also meant we could leave the window open at night; if there had been a heat wave, it could have been uncomfortable as there's no air conditioning). The bathroom had been refurbished and was spacious, with new sinks and tile and a great walk in tiled shower. There is free wifi, which worked perfectly.
We ate dinner in the hotel and it was outstanding. Very nice prix fixe choices, some very unique dishes, and lovely presentation. We thought the dining room was lovely and the service excellent, although to a prior reviewer's point, the servers always did address us in French. Happily, I understand enough to make it through a dinner, but I'm not sure how much English they spoke for those who know zero French.
The breakfast room is bright and cheerful with a nice little buffet of cheese, meat, yogurt, eggs etc. to go along with a basket of fresh bakery items. Service was attentive, with items being refilled promptly. After breakfast we took the tour of the Abbey when it was nice and quiet, then walked around town a bit before leaving in the late morning. Again, we had a very friendly conversation with the desk person (perhaps an owner?) before we left.
Cluny seems to be off the regular tourist trail but is well worth a stop. The Abbey is amazing and the town is very lovely -- and this hotel is very good. By the way, we booked the Soiree Gourmand which is a package including dinner, room and breakfast and I think it was money well spent.
