We went to Boskinac twice in three days. Their full menu is a little out of our price range so the first time the four of us shared three different salads, a cheese platter and a bottle of wine followed by ice cream and coffee. The second time we went for just ice cream and drinks. Only the carpaccio salad got any positive reaction, unanimously. The portions were so-so, as expected. Their wine was great (Gegic grand cru) and not as expensive as wine normally is in finer restaurants. The ice cream tris was great the first time, but two of the flavors were completely different (and bland) on the second visit. Wasn't it Anthony Bourdain, who loved Boskinac, who wrote in "Kitchen Confidential" that a good restaurant needs to have consistency?
The best things about this place are its surroundings and the winery. You can get a tour and stock up on some excellent wine and brandy at great prices. The average thing about Boskinac is the food. But the worst thing is the service. When we first arrived, we had no idea where to go as there is no maitre d'. We were nodded by the woman cleaning the windows, ignored by the hotel reception and a passing waiter, and when we finally found the dinner area and said we'd like to eat (it was almost 6pm) the waiter made a sour face and said "You want to eat now?" I don't even know how we managed to get their attention to seat us in the area by the pool, but we managed. Now I am not a snob, but when they charge me top dollar, I expect the whole package. The wine bottle was shown but there was no cork sniffing or taste pouring, and we waited for the cutlery which wasn't set properly.
On the second visit we found out that they will not give you a glass of tap water, they will only sell you bottled water. The way the guy put it was "we don't have tap water". I'm still kicking myself for not asking how they wash the dishes, I guess I was stunned. When requesting a bill, we waved the waiter and when he came and was told that we just need our check, he actually said "Why did you bring me down for that, you could have just made the hand gesture?" Now, he is right, but I don't think this is remotely the way to run a fancy restaurant. I have seen all kinds of rude behavior in the Balkans, and I have learned to expect it, but not in such a fine restaurant. Actually, in my eyes, they are not, they only think they are. Boskinac is just another pretender that has a long way to go.
