“We love Gina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2008

We have a 2-year-old daughter, and this was our first real break since her birth. Our main aim on the holiday was to have a really good family time without any stress, but we also hoped to do some skiing.

The hotel certainly lived up to our hopes. It's perfect for kids up to the age of 4 (I noticed that a couple of older children seemed a little restless). In the winter 3 of the pools are in use - 2 indoor and 1 outdoor. The indoor pools were a delight: very warm and safe, with toys and slides. There's a cinema with carpeted steps and cushions to lounge on (when it's quiet you can borrow DVDs to play on the big screen), a softplay area, a play kitchen, a creche, a small park, carts, trikes and a ski slope (although we were too late in the season for this). The hotel also organises excursions like tractor rides and tobogganing. All this for only 30 families. We went at the end of the ski season, so mid-week there were very few people, so we pretty much had the run of the place.

Holidaying at Ginas gave our daughter plenty of things to do on the doorstep, and gave us heaps of rest and a fair amount of skiing (unfortunately she wouldn't go into the creche, however lovely the carers were). Almost every window in the place had fab views of mountains. The meals in the restaurant were relaxing, and the food was great for all of us (I'm veggie). Our daughter learned to sit at table for more than 5 minutes, and lost her fear of swimming pools.

We'll definitely go again, but maybe try to persuade some friends with small children to join us next time.

We had booked an eight day stay which we had to leave after five. The hotel is greatly oversold, the four pools are the size of a garden pond, there is almost no activity for older children, most of the instructions are in German, and there was one English speaker in the whole hotel.

Although there were some nice touches, fruit downstairs, and the food was good, this was a dreadful waste of money. The seats in the restaurant were like train seats that had not been cleaned for 20 years, shiny with dirt. There are no activities at the weekend at all, and beware the map which shows the beautiful lake nearby, as if it is part of the property. In fact the lake is 15 minutes walk away, each stretch of it fenced off by numerous private owners and the part with the waterslide charges you to go in. This was incidentally the best part of the holiday, swimming in the lake.

Everything about this hotel is tired, done on a shoestring and oversold, particularly for older children. The hotel's location in the middle of suburbia does not help, there is no where for them to run around and explore.

The so-called Wellness Centre offers extremely expensive, and very poor quality, treatments. My leg waxing resulted in furry stripes down my legs, and the jacuzzi and steam room are only open occasionally.

This holiday was so oversold, by the agent and the literature that it leaves a bad taste in the mouth, not least a giant hole in the finances. There were several other English families there, who had been tempted by a telegraph article (had the journalist even been there I wonder?), all with equally woeful experiences, and with children more the target age group. In one case it was one family of six's first holiday abroad, and the quality of their holiday as with ours was shameful. Avoid!

If you have young children this is the place to stay. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday and to keep your kids happy is here. There is a children´s club with fabulous staff if you want to use it. What makes this place special is all the little things that other hotels don´t do this place does - need milk for the morning - they´ll give you a litre to put in the fridge in your room. Our son needs soya milk - they have as much as we need whenever we need it - and a soya yoghurt waiting for us at breakfast - without asking! The facilities are excellent and beautifully clean. The only downside is the meal tables - most are tucked away with no outside light, but everything else makes up for it - the toddler pools, the bikes, playground and sandpits (covered), the little trikes everywhere. Definately be back again and again.
