“Amazing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2010

My husband and myself stayed here for 2 nights for a midweek break in May. Very comfortable and spacious rooms with an amazing view. We stayed in a standard room but had many extras. Big room with sitting area, 2 showers ( one inside and one outside - HUGE!!) and a free standing bath, double basin and coffee/tea making facilities ( incl fridge). The only negative was that we had 2 single beds pushed together. ( We did not specificly ask for a double bed so I guess we can not really complain) So don't assume if you ask for a double room you will sleep in a double bed.
Dinner and breakfast was delicious, no complaints.

Driving distance from Addo elephant park.

Would recommend this to anyone. Relaxing stay.

Have stayed here several times. This is a beautiful & peaceful location on top of the Zuurberg Mountains with lovely gardens in which to stroll or sit and read a book.
The Hotel has been rebuilt & renovated as it was badly damaged in a Bush fire in Aug 2008. The new rooms are superb with excellent decor and lots of space. Very spacious shower & also an outside private shower!!! The very helpful & friendly staff also showed me the 5 family rooms situated in the main building which are also superb.
As usual the food is brilliant and it's nice to have breakfast on the new verandah overlooking the swimming pool.
The morning & afternoon Game Drives into the nearby Addo Elephant Park are well worth taking as the Hotel guides are extremely knowledgeable and you get a better view from the open Landrovers rather than a car. Lots of animals & I was lucky to see Lions!!!
Lots of other activities such as Elephant riding, Hiking trails, horse riding can be arranged by the hotel and all are worth doing.
If you go for a short walk along the road you will probably be joined by the hotel dogs who are spoiled by all the guests.
But my favourite thing to do is sitting on the front stoep, drink in hand watching the awesome sunset before dinner and sitting by the huge fire with coffee & a liquer afterwards.
This is a gem of a place and you should stay for more than one night as there is so much to do.

One of our best stays in SA.
We were so sorry that we only spent one night here. Absolutely lovely. Rooms charming and proper, shower of dreams (one insite, one outsite!). Friendly lady. Dinner was nice. Not time to use the swimming pool. Lounge comfortabel.
Need to come back...

For me and my family Zuurberg Mountain Inn was definately a lovely experience. We have been up there once before about 4 years ago, and much to our amazment could not believe the changes that had taken place. There is a whole new village of thatched cottages that have been built. The inside is based on african style, but in a very modern way.
After we had settled in we went for a long walk around the property and the surronding beautiful gardens. My kids are 6 & 8 years old, so it is always very hard to keep them entertained and still relax at the same time. I grabed my book and took them both down to the childrens play ground. While they tired themselves out i was able to relax and enjoy the peace.
That evening at dinner, we enjoyed a buffet that remined me a lot of my grans home cooking. After dinner one of the staff members offered to entertain the children while me and my husband enjoyed a bottle of wine.

My only regret is that we were only able stay the one night.
I would definately recommend Zuurberg Mountain Inn, as the staff makes you feel so at home and relaxed. Next time i come up I will make sure to stay longer as I still have to do the game drive and Elephant back safaris

The hotel is actually a sort of restcamp offering two categories of rondavels. The one categorie is very poor and very basic (you won´t stay there), the other is o.k. but nothing to recommend. Addo Park is about 50 min away, you have to travel on a bad dirt road. There is nothing around the hotel, just a very small gift shop which does not offer drinks or snacks. You have to eat in the restaurant which is expensive for South Africa (ZAR 145). The quality is very poor and disgusting. They had the same cheese for dinner and breakfast for two days.
The hotel is now under the management of Protea, its called Protea Addo.

You stay in thatched roof huts which are really quaint. We appreciated the accommodation as it was authentic and felt original. Though it was slightly dirty… dust on furniture and found a dead worm in the shower!

The food was AWFUL one evening, the next it was fine. Although, being in SA really does raise your standards in your expectations of eating out!

We stayed 2 nights and are glad we didn't have to stay another night as it really was out of the way of anywhere else to eat… and we couldn't face going down that hill and back again!

This isn't to say you shouldn't stay there... it's just a cheaper alternative to staying in a private game reserve, where you get 5* treatment at a huge price! This is the cheaper alternative... NEARBY the game reserves.

The Inn is 16 KM up a gravel round... up a mountain. It's either a novelty or a stress for the driver - make sure you have the right car!

Game Drives are organised through the Inn itself...

We went to Addo Elephant, Pumba and Elephant Riding in that order. I think if we had done it an any other order we wouldn't have been as impressed with them. We had a lot of cloud coverage which meant we saw more animals – so it worked out for us!

Addo – AMAZING to start off with. Lovely to see your first elephant drinking from the waterholes in large families. You're lucky if you see other animals apart from wart hogs / kudus.

Pumba – fantastic! So nice to off-road and to be off the tarmac as in Addo. We saw 3 of the big 5 and got up close – still respecting the animals. Had a lovely breakfast anda family of 4 who were staying at Zuurberg Mtn Inn and had experienced the previous evening's food couldn't stand the thought of going back and booked themselves into Pumba for 2 days 5 star treatment! We were happy to return to Zuurberg as it had history etc… but deep down we were really jealous!

Elephant back riding – we didn't ride the elephants, but did follow them to their waterhole where they swam. It was such an honour to be able to watch this, you could tell the elephants were happy and had a lot of recreation time. Had we have done this first we would not have been so excited at Addo or Pumba.

Our tour guide / driver for Addo and Elephant Back Riding was Darlington who was so lovely and really should be commended. He gave us lots of information while on our game drives… even stopping on roads to show us other points of interest on our way back!

We paid R250 (about £18 - doesn't sound much but it's actually alot of money in SA), each for our transfer to Pumba. We were in a people carrier with 6 other people – had we have known this we probably would have driven… as you can bet this money probably didn't go to the local driver – rather to the hotel!

  • Liked — Being on top ofa mountain
  • Disliked — Wasn't quite upto usual South African standards
  • Tips/Secrets — If you want 5* pay for extra for a private game reserve - they're out of this world and worth it... if you have the money!
