“A well-oiled machine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

Two hours by boat from Cartagena, Punta Faro delivers a beautiful contrast to the faster paced city you just left.

As soon as you arrive, lunch is waiting. All meals are buffet and oddly dinner is the most boring. But the food is fresh, tasty and they have a decent wine list considering dry land is two hours away. The staff is friendly, attentive and really goes out of their way to make sure you're happy.

Their on site activities are well- planned and not that expensive. The nightly happy hour is a plus and the rooms have a great tropical hideaway feel. It's truly a beautiful slice just sitting in the ocean.

Type A's and fuss budgets may not like it, but if you like beauty, serenity and gorgeous water and are ready to relax, make a reservation for one of it 45 rooms

The true in and outs of Punta Faro

Yes! it’s a 2hour boar ride, bring a tablet bc its definitely not a yacht and there is no bathrooms. As you’ve read in other post, they greet you w coconut drink and followed by a quick briefing than eventually lead you to the lunch buffet. The buffet is small, don’t think its like heading to a typical American buffet w 10-20 options, more like 2 w enough side dishes and salad to hold you off. The drinks are free during meal times, but charge when not. I booked the sea view room but ended up getting the deluxe room and honestly it was fine, good space and it was very quiet which is honestly what I wanted. The area is clean and yes Spanish speaking would benefit. The shower as mentioned are outside and yes the water is tepid at best, but who cares, your outside the tv had maybe one English channel so what I did was bring a media player to catch up on my shows(true detective) wifi didn’t work so I wouldn’t bank on it working, I mean your on an island. Sometimes the power may go out, did for us 1-3 times but not for very long. there was many activities, scuba diving, snorkeling, etc. we decided to hit the kayak, a member mentioned 30 minutes to tour the island, as a very fit person, her and I did it in an hour. I did do the massage, a half an hour is enough and honestly the place is “chill” so don’t expect a water park and many “over the top” things, its normal run of the mill resort, kinda felt like I was in a time share in Orlando. Anyhow here are my tips,

If the food isn’t to your liking as it was for me (not a fried food fan), you can ask the waiters to make a grilled chicken or steak

I would suggest buy a bottle of alcohol prior, they provide you w a refrigerator.

And finally try to find Sergio, hes a good guy and will always try to help in accommodations and he also speaks perfect English . have fun

Before you go to punta faro, know the following:
The boat ride is ~2 hours on a speed boat - no food or bathroom - they do pass out water an hour into the ride
The outdoor showers in your room have cool water but when it's 85 degrees does it really matter?
The buffet food is awesome and free, but like a cruise you have to pay for alcohol
The water "toys" are extra - we used the kayaks but it was a minimal charge.
Knowing all this you can go to the island and relax. The staff goes above and beyond (Alex took me on his morning run so I could understand the "track"). The island is small so I recommend kayaking around it - amazingly beautiful. I always imagined vacationing on a tropical island and this is your chance.

We came Punta Faro by accident (after the hotel we were supposed to go to on the island of Providencia - the Deep Blue - cancelled our reservation one day before our arrrival (!)). On the way there, we told our story to the travel agent (now a good friend) from Bogota who was on the boat with us, and she told us "you will see, this is a blessing in disguise..." She was right. Everything - from the exciting boat ride from Cartagena, to the very warm and personal welcome, to the very spacious and comfortable rooms, to the various activities (amazing given the small size of this island), was just fantastic. Our favorite moment was the evening boat ride to a lagoon to swim with fluorescent plankton. (And, we have to say that the one improvement they can work on is the website - it's much much more beautiful that it seems from the website!)

After staying 4 nights in Cartagena we spent 2 nights at Punta Faro to relax on this tropical paradise on Isla Mucura. As the hotel is quite small and you have to go there by boat on a 2 hour journey you already now most of the other guests within a couple of hours.
The hotel rooms are not the reason to come to Punta Faro but the service and the beach and activities are. Regarding the food, breakfast and lunch are good, dinner could be better.
I would suggest to make use of the activities the hotel organises but if you don't you can also enjoy the great beach.

As others have pointed out, the island itself and the beach are beautiful. The rooms in the hotel vary; our ocean view room was great; our kids' garden view room was fine for them, but had a dormatory feel to it. The biggest issue with the place is that they nickel and dime you for everything-- there is a refridgerator in the bathroom with bottles of water-- we assumed they were free so we could use the water to brush our teeeth. At checkout, they charged us for each bottle. They also charge for all drinks (including nonalcaholic drinks), for using the kayaks and other non motorized boats, etc. Also, the food was decent. Lunch was the best meal; breakfast was good, but they serve the same food everyday. The dinners felt very skimpy with few side dishes, etc. We found the servers and others to be very pleasant and helpful and even though we (and a few other couples who were there at the same time) speak no Spanish, their were enough englsih speakers on staff that it wasn't a problem. The scuba diving with Cali was fantastic-- he was incredibly patient and helpful. Likewise, the snorkling trip was great. (We planned to go fishing but it was too windy that day). As others have noted, the shower is cold and it has a push buttn to run the water for 20 seconds at a time-- it was fine, but I have been in much more remote locations that have figured out how to have hot running water. Lastly, dinner isn;t served until about 7:45 pm, so between the time that you finish on the beach until dinner, there is very little to do. (There is "happy hour" at one of the bars, but no live music or anything to make it entertaning (particularly for children, even teenagers)).
Overall, it was a great experience, but it was far from perfect.

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view room. Our kids were in a garden view room, which worked out great for them; my...

As many of the other reviews have already said this place is paradise. The service is amazing, the staff seems to anticipate your every need. They are also trying to be as ecological as they can with programs teaching the local children about protecting their environment. The only quibble is the food, while plentiful and fresh you aren't coming for the gourmet cooking. One other thing, be sure to have a massage over looking the Caribbean. it was glorious and reasonable.
