“10 reasons to stay in the hotel “Dongwe Ocean View” in Zanzibar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Zanzibar is the island in the Indian Ocean which is located 35 kilometers from African shore and belongs to Tanzania.
My husband and I stayed in the hotel “Dongwe Ocean View” in Zanzibar 19-30 January 2013.
Notice: this accommodation isn’t for admirers of active water sport, noisy parties and night discos. Also there is no animation team and children's entertainment.

• Solitude, harmony and grace. The hotel is a tropical beach paradise near the village called Dongwe. There are not sharp sounds all days, loud music in the evenings and kites does not fly. The life steadily flows under the whisper of the ocean and monsoon winds which are blowing on the one hand during six months, on the other - during another half year.

• A small hotel with a cozy territory. There are two three-floor buildings with nine rooms in each, a restaurant - bar, reception, living cozy covered area with TV, library and swimming pool area surrounded with coconut palms, trees, grass, flowers, white coral sand, cool blue pool and inviting ultramarine of the warm sea. There was no TV in room but we did not need it really.

• Friendly, sociable staff. The schedule of work for the employees of the hotel is «5 by 5», some even «5 by 2». We spent a lot of time telling each other about our lives.

And also the employees of the hotel were earnestly trying to solve any problems and fulfill all the wishes of their guests. Manager Samson always greeted all the guests shaking hands and tried to find out how we were and helped if necessary or recommended something.

His assistants Juma and Anneta had always been ready to accommodate all the guests in a more comfortable way, to organize trips and excursions. We traveled around the island and returned to the “nestle” of paradise Dongwe.

Staff of the restaurant created a wonderfully warm, homely atmosphere. Their
smiles and jokes were so contagious that the guests also began to communicate among themselves, forgetting about language barriers.

Cleanliness in the rooms and on the territory was supported entirely unnoticed
for vacationers. Every day the bed was adorned with fresh flowers.

• Home meal. There were European breakfast with Russian pancakes («chapatti» in Swahili), lunch and dinner to the Mediterranean traditions, light snack (tea, coffee with the «biscuits») was free for guests at “tea time” 4.30-5.30 p.m.

• Outdoor meal. If guests were tired from restaurant of hotel the managers advised and organized a trip to somewhere else. All tourists visited restaurant «Rock» which was located in a very interesting sea area. This restaurant and hotel “Dongwe Ocean View” were shares of the same business.

You can also dine at the restaurant «Door», which was located in a 10 – minutes - walk along the beach after the hotel «Club Vacanca».

Still we went to the restaurant «Padje by night». This is a place of youth subculture.

• Amazingly beautiful and comfortable beach. It is obvious, that the Lord created the Zanzibar in a good mood. Zanzibar was surrounded with a powerful coral reef whose width was one and a half kilometers. The hotel stood in front of boundless ocean, but the huge waves did not reach the shore, they were broken by a natural barrier of the coral reef.

Tide and low tide replaced each other two times during a day changing coastal zone beyond recognition. From about 8 a.m. until the afternoon the water went away – it was the most magical time to study seabed (aqua shoes were obligatory!) and bath in the cleanest transparent lagoons with snow-white sand gated corals.

In shallow water, remained oddly colored sea urchins, bright red five-pointed sea stars, living corals of different colors and forms, crabs, colorful fish. Flocks of small flight fishes jumped out from sea water. In the water and on shore we gathered collection of shells. During a low tide especially persevering tourists reached the edge of the coral reef!

It was such a grace to sit on the snow-white sand during low tide and bathe from time to time in the emerald water of sea lagoons.

After 1 p.m. the ocean rapidly took away their possession from tourists and restricted the beach.

Not far from the hotel (in front of the hotel «Sultan Palace») there was a good place for snorkeling.

• The unique location of Dongwe Ocean view. There was the passage through the great barrier of coral reef right In front of the hotel. This passage was visible even on the photo taken by us through the window of the plane on the way from Dubai to Cape Town. This place is very important for the local fishermen. Their brigade sailed at 8-9 a.m. by high-water into the ocean to return at 5 p.m. Local residents and curious tourists rushed to the catch, which fishermen laid out in knots right there on the sand for sale. Tourists took pictures of bizarre sea creatures and the process of trade. A catch was fully sold during 15 minutes!

A huge fish «Blue Marlin» which our restaurant staff purchased on the shore was eaten during several days!

• Unearthly beauty and harmony of Masai’s men. These men were a centerpiece of the hotel and the beach. The hotel was protected by representatives of this African tribe. These were high and slim guys in national costumes. Their homeland is destination near Kilimanjaro.

• Jogging, hiking and biking. Dense coral sand and infinitely long beach gave the possibility to walk and ride a bike comfortably. Bicycles were possible in the hotel to rent.

• Moreover accommodation in the hotel “Dongwe Ocean view” was much cheaper, than in the neighboring club hotels.

Have a pleasant rest in the hotel “Dongwe Ocean view” in Zanzibar!

That is perfect hotel for people or families who looks for real chill out. Location is fantastic , pretty secluded in remote area. You do not meet lot of tourists on the beach…
Hotel:
It is not a Sheraton but rooms are nice and very clean. They use insecticides so there are no insects or bugs in the rooms. We had room (109) with view to sea, pool and garden. Pretty spacious with large balcony providing fantastic view to Indian ocean. Only issue was bed – too soft but it depends on personal preference
Service:
People on Zanzibar in general are very friendly and they smile honestly to you. Service in Dongve Ocean View is very supportive (but not pushy), nice and discrete. They are friendly and open. Drinks in the bar are definitely not watered (and having 2 for evening is absolutely enough) and service is very good and have good ideas (drinks )
Food:
You have not large but very tasteful selection for breakfast, reasonable (as for Zanzibar) choice a la carte for lunch and dinner is either buffet either a la carte. We knew about mangroo crabs and asked Hotel to buy specially for us to try. Honestly it is much better than lobster (to our opinion) and much better priced. Fresh and tasty
Location:
Excellent but remote (we chose on purpose such a remote location). If you want to relax and chill out, have long walks on empty beaches, see daily life for local fisherman that that is the place. Every day we seen fisherman selling fish on the beach to locals. Not many’ beach boys” but ones you meet are very friendly but not pushy. Beaches are white and wide , ocean is green and calm. It is good location for snorkeling, seeing Jozani forests and spice trips.

We highly recommend Dongwe Ocean View. Greetings to staff :)

Room Tip: Top floor in building no 1 - room 109

Very nice and quiet place. We advise you to take the diving trip (just in front of the hotel), it is cheap and wonderfull! You will swim among a lot of fishes and see beautifull coral. The vue is superb and the people (as usual in Tanzanie), very friendly.

Stayed two nights here in Feb. Food was I thought just ok for the buffet meal, dinner. Off the menu had a great sandwich. Not much to do, as there is nothing nearby, pool looked inviting though I didn't use it. Meal area was nice. Had an issue with room, not their fault, but the manager Samson corrected it immediately by giving my travel partner her own room at no extra charge for the two nights and then comped drinks that night for the trouble. The rooms were big, had wifi available for purchase, nice big bathroom. Nice balcony good for a nap. The staff was extremely interested that our stay and anything we wanted was met.

The hotel is good in mist ways; location, service, cleaning and pool. The only ting to wish for is better variaty on the evening dinner buffé.

The staff was wonderful; smiling, helpful and professional.

Service great, food good! What more can I say? Staff very considerate, helpful and friendly. Staff always willing to assist when you want to go on excursions.

I'm not a big fan of big resorts with lots of people, continuous entertainment, loud music and 'partying'. Therefore I enjoyed Dongwe immensely - the complete opposit - the hotel's atmosphere was very relaxing, nice and comfortable - able to do your own thing.

Excursions I would recommend - snorkeling just down the beach, blue safari, visiting the rock restaurant and the spice tour. I really thought that's not for me but I found it very interesting and an experience to recommend - learnt a lot of the culture.

No 'beach boys' hassling you all the time - that was a bonus!!

Will definately recommend.

My wife and I have just returned from ten romantic days at Dongwe Beach View and, despite the fact that beach holidays really aren't my 'thing', I could not have been happier. The hotel itself was lovely, from the spacious rooms with huge beds to the hanging wicker chairs in the open air reception area, to the laid back bar on stilts above the beach, watched over by friendly 'Masai'. The hotel staff were invariably friendly and helpful, be they working in bar or restaurant, cleaners, pool-boys or cooks, the food was fresh and of good quality and varied every day according to what the 'catch' was, the service impeccable.
We were there for my wife's birthday and what looked to be the entire staff celebrated with us by bringing a cake with her name on it and a bottle of wine to our table, complete with an utterly unique 'Swahili' rendition of 'Happy Birthday'.
It was undoubtedly a holiday highlight.

I had half expected beaches crowded with deckchairs and sunburnt tourists, with armed guards patrolling, but what we got was complete tranquility, the beautiful, palm-lined beach largely empty but for a few local fishermen preparing their dhows. I heard from fellow guests that other parts of the island had been overcrowded and wet during our stay, but we saw nothing but hot sunshine and the occasional gathering of a dozen people when the fishermen spread their catch out on the beach once a day.
Being on the east coast of the island, Dongwe Beach View enjoyed a pleasant breeze on most days that we were there. Not refreshing exactly, but enough to make the intense heat bearable. The shallow stretch of sea that lies between the beach and the coral reef, a kilometer out, made for a calm place to swim when the tide was in (the sea as hot as bathwater), and a great place to rock-pool when the tide was out. We even saw a stingray gliding through the low-tide pools. You don't see that in the UK!
We had the luxury of a car while we were there and found that, by traveling just a mile or three up and down the coast from the hotel, there was enough variety of scenery and bars, to keep things interesting without going too far afield.
Back to the staff; When we were pulled by the bribe-seeking police, Juma on the reception desk was the embodiment of calm reassurance, when we went to Stone Town, waiter Deo kindly showed us round the market, Anita on reception was always smilingly helpful, whatever the request, and barman/waiter Soleil was ever ready to sit and share his knowledge of Zanzibari life, when not engaged in serving others. Samson the manager patrolled the restaurant each evening, ensuring that his guests had no problems, and teaching us a new Swahili word each day. And the rest of the staff, without exception (yes Barack, even you :)), were fantastically welcoming, warm and helpful.
By the end of our stay we were almost coming to see all these guys as family, and I shall miss them all, even more than the stunning views from our balcony.
Hakuna matata, as they would undoubtedly say.
Were we to return to Zanzibar one day, Dongwe Ocean View would certainly be our first port of call.

Room Tip: Every room faces the sea, but I reckon it worth asking for a top floor room for a marginally better...
