“Cosy, but very busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2014

This hostel is spread over three separate buildings, meaning that there can be a lot of people staying without it seeming crowded. However, this also means that the kitchen and bathrooms/showers can get quite busy. But if you plan your day for this, it isn't a big deal to avoid. Location is great, just off the main road but very walkable to everything in town. Very friendly lady at check-in. My room had its own adjustable heater so I stayed warm even though it got below freezing at night. It can be a bit loud since it is located in older buildings, but the hostel has plenty of signs that ask people to be quiet between 10pm-7pm, and people seemed to respect it.

Hi Laura,
Thank you very much for your review. You are right, when the hostel is full, it can be a bit busy - but it is very easy to avoid peak hours in the kitchen. We're glad you managed to stay warm. Tekapo is as much a winter-resort as it is a summer-resort. Winter is special with snow and ice, but it is our business that you stay warm and I am glad we achieved that. Thank you.

The staff was really helpful and was always making sure the facilities were clean and tidy, lighting up the fire in the lounge, tidying up the kitchen, changing the kitchen rugs...very nice!!!
The twin room we stayed in was very cozy and clean. Bathrooms clean and well distributed.
Beautiful garden and set up.
Lounge with fire!! and spacious.

Room Tip: try to ask for a room in the house by the common areas. The kitchen in the mornings could be busy w...

Hi Eva,
Thank you very much for your review. Yes, we are getting into the time of year where the fire in the lounge will be going a lot. Lake Tekapo is 700 metres above sea level, so in winter we have many cold nights. But the fire in the lounge, the heaters in the rooms and the hot water bottles will keep everyone warm. We are glad you appreciated it. Thank you.

We arrived at at Tailor-Maid Backpackers in December - the lupines were in full bloom. This hostel sits back from the main road and does not have a lake view, but the surrounding gardens are a delight and the place itself is very welcoming. The staff are great and the rooms spacious (we slept well on a king-sized bed with good quality linens)
It was a short walk down to Tekapo - a stunning blue lake surrounded by lupines (Dec -Feb)
This whole area is amazing. There are hot pools close by with views of the snow capped mountains and a short drive brings you to Mt John and the Astro Cafe (not to be missed) there is also a observatory next to the cafe where night sky viewings can be arranged

Thank you very much for your lovely review. Yes, the lupins in December make Lake Tekapo look glorious. December is the best time to see the lupins in full glory, but also for the many varieties of irises in our garden, so you timed your visit well.
Thank you.

Had a twin/zta in room. Beds comfortable and smelled really clean in our room. Bathrooms were clean even though shared. Shower was great, good pressure, great hot water and even a built in heater to use! Towels were available under the sinks. Large kitchen to cook food. An oven with two stoves and a fridge to keep your food cold. Great location from supermarket and the iconic church. A very large outdoor area with a hammock and picnic table to enjoy your dinner and wine. Checkin was easy and she showed us around. You can pay 5$ for 100gigs of internet, yes gigs not mb. Go enjoy your stay at this great little place. Yes, the floors can be squeaky at times, and the place isn't sound proof...but they post signs explaining this and asking guests to respect quiet hours, etc. so as long as you know going in that you might hear people walking around you will be fine. They have an outdoor area to hang up laundry too!

Dear world traveller, thank you so much for your very detailed review. It is always good to read about the things we can improve, but sometimes it is nice to read that our guests enjoyed the things that we have. We will try and keep up the good work and hope that many more world travellers like you will enjoy our 'great little place'.

I stayed at Tailor-Made from 4-7 April with my girlfriend. The staff was very friendly and helped us locate a star gazing party that was taking place during one of the nights of our stay. Unfortunately, the weather did not want to cooperate. The kitchen was the biggest of the 3 backpackers that we stayed at during our trip. Also, the beds were very comfortable. For the price and location alone, you can not beat Tailor-Made Backpackers. I wish to come back again when the weather is nice to enjoy their world renowned star gazing.

What a shame about the weather! You will have to come back and experience the amazing night sky on a clear day. I hope you will come back and I hope your experience will be as good, if not better than your first time here. Thank you for your review.

This backpackers hostel is quite basic. Our twin room was small even in backpackers standards, the shower and toilet facilities were clean but basic (with low toilet/guest ratio), and there was no sound proofing whatsoever. I'm thankful that our form neighbors didn't stay up until late. Kitchen is a backpackers standard.

Despite the 2 star (2.5 if that option existed in TripAdvisor), this is a reasonable place to stay, and to the best of my knowledge Lake Tekapo doesn't have many other accommodations in this price range. Just don't expect too much, any pray for considerate neighbours.

We are sorry, that our hostel was not quite what you had hoped for. Some of our twin rooms are reasonably small, especially since we insist on having normal single beds rather than bunk-beds. Within the restraints of being budget accommodation we offer good quality beds, clean facilities, a large garden and friendly staff. The characteristically kiwi wooden buildings are very safe during an earthquake but yes, unlike concrete buildings, they tend to be less soundproof. Thank you for taking the time to review our hostel not just negatively, despite your disappointment.

Sleeping in a dorm while travelling can be a hit and miss affair. Sleep is often elusive due to bunk beds and/or uncomfortable beds. Not so in this hostel. I have never had such a great couple of nights sleep in such comfy beds in the 4-bed room I was in (no bunk beds).

The hostel is perfectly located just a couple of minutes walk from the village centre and is equally convenient for the nearby hikes around the lake.

I used the kitchen which was clean and functional and there is a lovely lounge area to get to know your fellow travellers.

The other communal facilities were equally clean and of an excellent standard.

I only met one of the members of staff and she was exceptionally friendly and helped me with recommending the best local hikes.

All in all, this is a perfect place to base yourself to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Lake Tekapo.
