“The most beautiful place on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Absolutely spectacular location - this is THE spot to stop in Tekapo!!! We brought a group of guests (as part of a corporate event) for lunch and the staff at the Astro Cafe were more than happy to make arrangements to accommodate our group of 30 people. Needless to say, everyone was completely blown away with the friendly service and incredible views of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding landscape. We will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to everyone!

“Well worth the trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

We drove up to grab some coffe before lunch and leaving lake tekapo and was glad that we made the trip. The view from top is spectacular, with 360 degree view avaliable of the surrounding with lake tekapo on one side and mckenzie plains on the other. The drinks were alright but slightly pricey especially the cold drinks which were sold from $8.50 each. Otherwise all is week.
It is also definitely worth it to take a short walk to the south view point, since from there can you see the township of lake tekapo.

“Worth the drive or walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

When we lived close to Lake Tekapo we would visit the Café regularly - they have a coffee card :-) & would also take overseas visitors for a look. I didn't ever walk up but have been told it is a good walk - tho not on too hot a day.
The view is 360 degrees & wonderful in any weather. The road is closed at the bottom of Mt John if conditions are unsuitable - e.g. snow/ice/heavy wind. It is a sealed zig-zag road & at times you have to pull over to pass other traffic. Stunning views as you drive up & down, so stop to see - don't try to drive & look! There is a good car park at the top. Toilets are available but not in the Café itself.
Food is good but limited & a variety of coffees & teas. Also free cold water along with information books on the area & other National Park walks.
Evening visits have to be with a commercial firm, Earth & Sky - for Stargazing & the Café is closed at night - no lights are allowed so as not to cause pollution for those watching the Stars. Sometimes the observatories are open during the day.
Lake Alexandrina is also visible from the top & can be visited by driving further on from the entrance to Mt John - when the lupins come out in November it's worth spending some time driving further.

I had a cup of latte as well as a sandwich and was pretty impressed by it.

I would say the food isnt worth going up but the view definitely is.
