“Storyin Lake Tekapo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

Very, very good view from the warm common area!!

When the weather is not very good, raining, too cold, or windy, we can just go back to our beautiful common area, always warm!!!

Nice laundry with a view.
The kitchen is not very clean sometimes.
But bathroom is usually clean.
A little crowded dorm room with comfortable beds.

I stayed 6 nights here and I saw Lake Tekapo from morning to night, from sunny to rainy. Calm like mirror, wavy surge, colorful mountains, changeable sun lights, unpredictable weather........

So thanks so much there is a place like this.

Highly recommend this hostel.

I spent few days in this hostel and was very nice. Dormitory are good, bathroom ok, very clean. My favorite thing here is the lake view and the region. Just awesome. Tekapo Lake is a paradise!!
It's a little hostel where you can relax, walk around the lake, go to Mt John or to the hot pools and look the stars.

Sitting in the lounge room you get one of the best views of Lake Tekapo there is - and for a fraction of the price of the local hotels. Also a log fire to keep warm and add to the atmosphere.

Staff were fabulous. Kitchen clean and organised.

This is definitely my favorite among all the hostels that I have stayed in. Well-located and just within walking distance (in a couple of minutes) to town village, YHA Lake Tekapo has an amazing view of the lake where one can catch the sunrise! It is within 15mins walking distance to the hotsprings or if you go the other way, it would be 15mins to the famous chapel.

Receptionists were all very kind and nice (helpful too!). The lounge was so comfortable and the kitchen has got to be one of the most well-kept and cleanest of the 3 YHA that I stayed.

There were only 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets but that's ok, as there weren't many guests. Shower works well with healthy flow of warm/hot water and hair dryers are available upon request from the reception.

I booked for the double room, that's right next to the male toilets. There were many reviews about noise but it was alright for me. I find the room cosy, and just nice for a solo traveller who wants to spulrge abit but not to the extent of staying at a hotel. Wifi was available at all time (full signal!), regardless of whether I am in my room or in the lounge area.

There are tiny touches, like art pebbles with messages that travellers left behind, and books or clothes for exchange and nice posters and compiled info of tekapo and the region in files. It's the small things that count and one will definitely feel at home at Lake Tekapo YHA.

Try it to know it:)

It's a small place, and you can feel it. The rooms are noisier than in the other YHAs we have been to. The location is a bit outside of the centre but we had a car so it didn't matter. And the view from the dining room and the kitchen more than compensated for it. It's just like being outside in front the lake with the massive glass windows on the dining room.

I stayed for three nights in a female dorm. Check in was fine, and I was able to store my bags until the dorm was ready. The room had two sets of bunks and one bed. It was comfortable and warm with an adjustable heater. The room had a window onto a corridor (accessing the kitchen and the lounge), but noise was only a problem once when someone was Skyping late at night in the corridor and had not realised they were right next to a bedroom.
The kitchen was kept well clean, with staff visibly keeping an eye on it. On one morning, people had made a big mess which was a shame for the staff member having to clear it all up.
The bathroom I used had several showers and was generally clean, although not immaculate. The lounge was very comfortable with a small TV area with DVDs. Unfortunately, the DVD I was watching was broken half way through, but hopefully it has now been removed from circulation (don't try watching the Princess Bride!). The view from the lounge and kitchen is splendid. The lake stretches out before you. Lovely.
Be aware that the hostel is not right in the middle of town, and you will have to walk for about 5-10 minutes to get there if your bus drops off in town.

Since there is not so much choice for the hostel in Lake Tekapo, a bit pricy for 5 sharing room, which the space is pretty small for 5 persons. Moderate YHA hostel. The best part of the hostel is the lake view, stunning lake tekapo you may spend day and night with different color changing of the lake, Highly recommended to do a trek to mount Astro and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake in the summit.
