“Average hostel, but great views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

The view from the common room is what makes this hostel special. Apart from that though, it's an average YHA hostel. It's clean, has good facilities and the staff are friendly and helpful but the rooms aren't great. There was no window in mine and it was a bit cramped. It could have done with one less bed. Also, the rooms are located directly off the kitchen which isn't great.

We got Room 1 (double room, no ensuite) which was near the male toilet, and the kitchen / dining area.

It was slightly noisy (but not too unbearable) because guests were hanging out there till pretty late at night, and then hours later, the first wave of early risers are up in the kitchen making breakfast (and a din!) by 6am. Luckily we also rose pretty early, but gosh, if you were planning to sleep in a bit, I think it would be quite impossible! The kitchen was reasonably clean and pretty well-equipped, and room was clean too. Bathroom wasn't as clean as I hoped, but it was alright.

The room we had was quite small, and if you have lots of bags, it would be a headache. We had the sense to leave our large luggages in the car, and only brought along with us a small overnight bag as we only stayed one night.

There were games and books at the living room so you can hang out there if you like.

The hallway didn't seem to be heated at all, so it was freezing while I walked back from the ladies' shared bathroom to our room.

Room Tip: try to ask for rooms away from the dining room / kitchen. it can get a bit noisy if u're trying...

The hotel is clean, comfy and lovely. The staff is nice and very helpful. I stayed there for only one night but really enjoyed it. The star gazing at night at the back yard was awesome. The view of the Tekapo Lake is just great, both at night and at sunrise. By the way, there were many cute little rabbits at the hotel site and around the lake.

The YHA at Lake Tekapo has a great location. It has great views of the lake (as mentioned in previous reviews) but that's not all. The staff is friendly and the place is very clean. Even though it is small, it has a nice games room/lounge, and the kitchen and bathroom are sufficient to support the number of guests. It is very close to where the buses stop.

Overall is a great hostel in one of the best places I’ve been to in New Zealand. I would stay there again and recommend to my friends.

All YHA hostels in Newzealand maintain a certain standard and this property was no different. But lets get straight to the point. It's all about the view. This property is located overlooking Lake Tekapo, which for many, is the most beautiful lake in Newzealand. Its turqoise blue waters are a sight to behold in any season. YHA, Tekapo has got the perfect location to enjoy such beautiful scenes. Just roll out a chair and admire the beautiful scenery infront of your eyes. Another good option is to enjoy star gazing in the clear night sky. Views of the stars would be clear and unblocked given how unpolluted this area is. Highly recommended

We spent one night here in a 6-bed dorm. The lady at check-in was friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious but there was a bit of a smell of damp. They have 2 computers and Global Gossip wifi.

The dining room is large but the kitchen felt crowded when there were more than 4 people cooking. The TV lounge is nice with a movie being shown on Sunday evenings. You can borrow DVDs with a 20 dollar deposit.

The bathrooms were clean. The location is good, not far from the shops and on the way to the Mount John lookout.

The hostel was cozy and quiet at night. The only thing they could improve is to have lockers in the dorms, and longer reception hours. The only secure lockers they have are outside and cost 2 dollars. They have unsecured storage for backpacks.

We were in Tekapo YHA in early Oct and stayed in a double bed room. The common room has an awesome view .. an adequate kitchen.. but the cleaningness of the share bathroom could be improved... it's a bit flooding after people showers and last until the next morning and all wet on the toilet's floor. And no reception after 8pm.. you can't ask for help during off hours..

But be honest, it has the view that you can never beat!
