“A good country pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

We spent a comfortable and interesting night at the Whanagamomona hotel, an unpretentious, clean, well run, country pub, with lots of history and character, and a great ambience, Keep in mind that it is over 100 years old, and you won’t be disappointed. The bedrooms on the second floor are basic and quite small, with a bed and a wash basin, but they are clean and warm, and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are down the hall, with three showers for the nine available rooms. Breakfast (juice, cereal, fruit and toast) is included in the room rate. The hotel WiFi is not available to guests. We had an excellent dinner in the pub, followed by an interesting talk in the upstairs lounge with a young truck driver. Whangamonona is a good overnight stop on Highway 43, the Forgotten World Highway, which climbs over several steep saddles as it winds through hilly back country, with lots of bush and some great views.

We had a lovely Sunday night here. It's a cool old hotel and the rooms are very tidy indeed. The service was good, despite them being busy with lots of locals (most of whom were without electricity so had come to the pub for dinner). The location means you have heaps of fascinating and picturesque places to drive to. Every New Zealander should explore this road and its history, and many internationals would love it too. We'll be back!
