My wife and I just returned from 4 days at the Intercontinental San Juan from 1/7 - 1/10/05. As much as I travel on business, I can tell you that I've never stayed anywhere that offered the level of personal service that we received here. We did not stay in the 'tower', but instead upgraded to one of the suites next to the pool. We literally walked out of our room and into the tropical pool area. The first night we dined at Ruth's Chris, which, if you've ever eaten there in other cities, you know that they make the greatest steaks around. We were not disappointed. On Saturday, my wife "demanded" that I go play golf somewhere while she laid by the pool and did absolutely nothing. Unfortunately for both of us, it rained on and off that entire day but it was still very relaxing for her, and I got to play a nice course (Rio Mar at the Westin Resort). That night we ate at Passagio's, their Italian restaurant on site. We were not that impressed, as our waiter was nowhere to be found most of the time, and spoke unintelligible English. On Sunday, with weather forecasts for skattered showers, we rented a car (through the concierge) and drove up Rt 187 which runs along the ocean. Very nice drive and you can even drive right up onto the beach and park for awhile. Sunday night we ate at Fontana De Roma, an Italian restaurant on top of the Howard Johnson's Hotel, about 8 blocks form the Intercontinental. Very nice place, 10th floor over looking everything, and the food was Excellent and the quantities were huge. Loved it. Sure enough, on Monday the sun came out without a cloud in the sky but we had some shopping to do for the kids so we couldn't really enjoy the great weather. Arrive at least 90-minutes before your flight because of their unusual way of checking bags. Not a big deal; just takes a long time.
If you have the opportunity to work with Rosie at the Concierge, consider yourself fortunate. She is AWESOME. There's nothing she can't do for you. Also, look for Jose Rivera out front for taxi's and other advice...great guy. All in all, a wonderful stay and we will definitely be returning.
