We stayed for just one night after a cruise and before heading out on the island. That's the real Puerto Rico. Like the cruise line says, "Get out there."
Palmas del Mar is a planned resort/residential community with lots of golf course, condos, restaurants etc. The grounds were very nice and the room was fine. Staff was very helpful and nice. There is no elevator. The valet parking is $15, and they charge for self parking too. The valet service was good. The pool is very nice and there is a small but adequate beach just a short walk away. There is a small casino there and when we arrived there was a big party of locals just off the lobby. Nobody could exactly tell us what they were celebrating, but they were certainly having a great time. It seemed like all the restaurants in the area were a little on the expensive side. Staff made us a reservation at one called Caracol, but when we arrived they said we had no reservation and we would have to wait a long time while several large parties were served. I believe this was not the fault of the hotel staff but of the restaurant; stay away from Caracol restaurant, they were not good with us. We ate at the hotel restaurant instead, which was good, and not overly expensive. There is also a small coffee shop for breakfast and snacks, and a wine bar. Overall, I would say that this is a very nice place. And if you like to gamble or golf, it would be even better for you.
If you use a GPS, enter Palmas Drive, not the Candelero address. Otherwise you may end up on the side of a mountain.
