“stayed for a week”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

My wife and I went with another couple to Club Cala the last week of March. It was a blast! In fairness, this is not a swanky, "all-inclusive" type resort. With that said, I couldn't possibly disagree more with those who thought the staff was somehow sub par. We found them to be very attentive and helpful. The facility itself was clean and well situated (close to the beach). The beach was a short, one block walk and was perfect for hanging out and splashing around in the surf. We plan on returning next year and look forward to a similar experience!

Every year it was a sad disappointment to return to what once a great timeshare to see how much more it had deteriorated despite the high yearly maintenance fee. This year it was different, they had replaced all of the doors and windows on the units, the condos were in better repair, the beds were comfortable and the grounds well taken care of. By no means is Club Cala close to the place it once was but it appears that an effort is being made to resurrect it from the run down mismanaged resort that it had become over the years.

The condo we have is a two bedroom poolside unit. Despite the recent improvements it still suffers from years of neglect. The bathrooms are extremely small and in desperate need of updating. The tile floors are still the horrid tile that has been in place for over a decade. You still have to open the dishwasher before you can open the silverware drawers and you are lucky if there are enough utensils, dishes, glasses for everyone. Despite the conditions we have always have a fantastic time while using our week at Club Cala and this year was no exception. Upon returning from a long day of fun in the sun it is great to have a place to return to that is clean and comfortable. In the evening we really enjoy sitting out on the patio overlooking the pool and enjoying a glass of wine while deciding where to go for dinner. If you are looking for luxurious accommodations this place is not for you. If you are looking for a safe, clean place to relax and rest your head in evening while enjoying the eastern cost of PR then this is your place.

Loved Puerto Rico, but my experience with this resort was so catastrophic it would be immoral not to warn people. Please understand I wanted to write a glowing review, to counteract those I read with alarm just before leaving for Puerto Rico. The outer appearance of the villas are lovely and the desk staff is friendly and great at giving directions. However, inside the units is another story. A key feature of timeshares is the presence of a kitchen - something I always use on a trip. It didn't bother me terribly that the oven was very hard to turn off (it kept snapping back on) and the front and rear burners on the right side lit up under each others' on/off switches. I am honestly pretty easygoing about such things. But a few hours after I stocked the refrigerator, it seemed to die - the freezer even seemed hot. I spent three days trying to get maintenance to fix this before opening the fridge one morning and smelling the most awful odor. I opened the freezer door and saw that it has literally imploded - melted down (see photos). All of my food, now tasting like melted plastic - was ruined. Worse, the maintenance man told me it may have been do to a faulty electrical circuit (which might have caused an apartment fire). The front desk manager, looked properly alarmed at the photos, grabbed my phone and ran upstairs to the hotel manager, who you'd imagine would have come out to talk to me after seeing them. He didn't. He told her to reimburse me for $15 worth of food and figured this would put an end to it. They did, after some hours (after promising me a 30 minute turn-around), put a replacement fridge in the room, but it was old and ended up malfunctioning as well, dripping condensation (I assume) down the outer door of the fridge to the point where the kitchen floor was wet. Between this, the faulty outlet and the ongoing smell of burnt plastic, I knew I couldn't sleep well in that villa, so in the middle of the night, two days before my vacation ended, I had to pack up everything, carry it myself to another villa and unpack. At this point I was exhausted and frustrated and demanded the next morning to see the manager, Sem Cuevas. I think he only agreed to it because they didn't want a scene at the front desk. He apologized for showing no concern and made the useless gesture of offering to extend my vacation there (as though most of us have flexible plane tickets) or offered me a voucher to stay again for three nights (again, as though most of us can just hop on a plane whenever we want). They did end up comping me for an hour of horseback riding, but I stressed to Mr. Cuevas that what I really wanted was concern from the management for a client whose expensive vacation was marred by an experience at his resort. He appeared to understand, however he clearly did not. While the fridge at the new villa worked, the mattress on the bed had a deep, four-foot long crater ("That's weird," gasped a housekeeper when looking at it). The rest of the mattress was impossibly lumpy. During our meeting, I asked Mr. Cuevas to change it so I wouldn't lose a second night's sleep and he promised he would. An hour later, he reaffirmed this promise, but he went home without so much as giving the order because, as he told the night manager on the phone when she called him at his home, "We don't have any more mattresses, because we're full." I assume this means he installed an unsuspecting family in the room with the second faulty refrigerator and questionable electrical outlet. What's troublesome here is he knew, when promising twice to change the mattress, that there was no available mattress to swap with the damaged one. As badly as this reflects on his management skills, why not tell the truth when a lie is bound to inflame anger? That evening, it was again impossible to sleep and my back was aching by morning. At this point I gave up and will simply report the whole mess to RCI and Tapestry Hotels. On my last night at Club Cala, I was forced to sleep on the couch, which was more comfortable than the mess of a mattress.

How this place continues to exist with this level of incompetence at the helm is beyond me. As the captain of a local scuba company told me as he drove me back to the villa (after the Club Cala van failed to pick me up as the front desk had promised - something he said happens all the time), "There are many timeshares in Puerto Rico that are very nice, but Club Cala is not one of them. Next time, you should stay somewhere else."

Good advice

Room Tip: Please find another place to stay. The AC units kept one family awake all night. My own nightmare is...

This huge, gated area must be among the neatest on the island. However individual hotels/condos may very. Some uncertainty and lack of communication among the the staff as to who's in charge, are they running a timeshare resort or a hotel and what's the status of various rooms. The one we got was fine - spacious, nice view, clean, well supplied and quiet once the AC was turned off. The pizza at the nearby shopping mall was the best we've had outside the 48.

Room Tip: Not really sure what choice one has.

We have visited Club Cala de Palmas and was uncertain at first due to all the bad reviews. But I must say, we had a fantastic time. The resort was clean. The staff was friendly. The cleaning service was great! One of the sinks was stopped up, when we were using it, but we contacted the front desk, they responded promptly to repair it. The welcome event was awesome! Restaurants nearby. Beach 3 minute walk. Overall, we would definitely recommend this resort.

Room Tip: We requested the room near the Oasis Pool.

#1...they have only renovated about 10 villas designated for only exchange renters thru their Royal Holiday program.
#2...if those rooms fill up you get a villa that is so run down its ridiculous.
#3...Villas have power outages almost every day and you lose your power and then alarms go off in the nearby owned villas...
#4...long walk to beach where there are only a limited amount of chairs, so high season is not a good time to be there...
#5...when the maids come for housekeeping you can't even get fresh wash cloths..you have to call housekeeping and hope that they will finally bring them...
#6...they are not handicap excessible by any means...steps everywhere ...and no wheelchairs, except in the casino where they will gladly roll you in to take your money...
#7...had a 3 bed/2bath condo that will sleep 7 but only had dishes and table seating for 4...took 2 days for them to get us the extra things we needed...
#8...high surf...we even saw a poor man drown...no lifeguards and the beach patrol are not aloud to go into the waters to help...WTF...
#9...nothing for small children to do unless you want to spend $16.05 PER ADULT and $5.00 Per child EACH day to get into the Beach Club...
#10...I could go on and on...but, bottom line is this is not a kid friendly or senior friendly environment...Don't let them kid you...

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else, neither Club Cala Royal Holiday or the Wnydam Garden Hotel were a le to answer...

We chose club cala thru international interval. The location of the resort is great... the accommodations are not. The room we had was right at the dolphin pool, which was nice, however, the inside of the unit was poor. First appearances of the unit was that it was clean, but that wasn't the case. The furniture was dirty and stained. The kitchen was barely useable. Only one of the four stove burners worked and after maintenance came to fix it we had two useable burners but the original working burner didn't work. The kitchen faucet felt like it was going to fall off in our hands, and the sink wasn't sealed to the countertop so I have no idea what was growing/living in that area as all the food fell in the cracks when wiping the counter. The last drawer was rotted out and the pans fell on the floor when opened. This was also not a good unit for a family with an 18 month old. The stairs and hard tile floors were dangerous as well as the front porch did not offer any safety for our child. Families with young children might not feel safe. The pools were clean and the child pools were very nice for our baby. The beach was close enough, although the seaweed made it hard to actually be on the beach. We won't ever stay at club cala again because the units were dirty, old, and outdated. It's a shame because the location was perfect. Go for the location, not for the unit.
