“A special place in the countryside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

The hotel has a very special atmosphere. It's situated in a somewhat remote village "in the wild", with sheep, cows and beautiful views around it. The location is both plus and minus for some (who is travelling by public transport), because the buses to the village are not very frequent, especially on Sundays. And the village itself is tiny. But if you want to escape from it all - it's a perfect place. And everything adds up to the atmosphere - the quietness, the interior, the smell of an old house, birdwatchers staying at the hotel, a fireplace that they lit when the weather is bad, poetic views from the windows. And the staff - they are the most helpful, friendly and welcoming I've ever seen. They give advice and surround you with care. The rooms are quite big, cozy and very sweet. If you have a bathroom that is not in your room - it's rewarded by it's size and presence of a bath. It's clean and private. The breakfast is very tasty. The locals are so nice. The surrounding area is very beautiful. It's convenient to explore the Northern part of the Cairngorms from the nearby town Aviemore. Car travelers won't have any problems at all, I guess. A very pleasant and interesting stay overall.

As a birdwatching break it is certainly 5 star with friendly and knowledgable guides using two minibuses so only 6-7 in each .
As a hotel it leaves some things to be desired. Don't ever accept the 'small single' as miniscule would be far more accurate. A small bed jammed against a draughty window with the room too small to even pull the bed away from the wall. The en-suite so small the shower was just a triangle of a normal sized shower - how to get in and close the door?
I was fortunate enough to be moved to another room when I complained.

Other downsides - porridge put out in bowls whether you were there or not. The second choice of sweet each evening was fruit salad - always apple and little else. Food generally good and sometimes really good, once really poor, Just not the quality you would expect from the starred restaurant within the hotel.

I would recommend it for a birding break - think it would not be good as independent holiday.

Room Tip: avoid small ensuite and also the single with private bathroom - bathroom too far away

There is nothing glamorous or jaw dropping about the locale of this hotel but that said it is a fine stopping point while visiting in the Aviemore area. It sits by itself so a car is essential though pick-up service is provided from Aviemore train station. The hotel is perfectly clean and the staff friendly and helpful. No shampoo etc. so bring your own. Food is home cooked Scotish fare and there is always a lovely roaring fire and bar service is available.

The Mountview Hotel is owned by Heatherlea birdwatching and specialises in birdwatching trips. I was there as one of those organised trips.
The location of the hotel, on top of the hill, as the name suggests affords fantastic views of the mountains. The building is beautifully Victorian in its build with some of the lovely old Victorian features retained. The bar and restaurant area, which is open to non residents, is small and well decorated. The bar does not serve draught beer but instead specialises in local bottled beers which I have to say were very good.
I had the downstairs bedroom as I had a mobility problem at the time of the visit. It was clean, tidy with a good quality bed. The en-suite shower room and toilet were perfectly adequate.
The food was absolutely fantastic! Great breakfast selection. Always a vegetarian option and fantastic portions. They certainly make sure you don't go hungry on the birding outings either with great packed lunches and snacks and tea and coffee when you stop.
All the staff, without exception, were fantastic. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
I thoroughly enjoyed my weeks stay at the mountview and have no qualms about recommending it here.
Birdwatchers or not, you will have a great stay at this lovely hotel in the beautiful Cairngorms national park.

The Mountview is in a lovely location, with views over 3 mountain ranges, in a quiet spot not far off the A9 so quite easy to get to. The food was excellent and breakfast kept me going all day. The staff were friendly and made me feel at home. I was upgraded to a double room, because it happened to be available. With open fires and comfortable sitting rooms, it was the sort of place I'd happily get snowed into!

This lovely little hotel specialises in birdwatching tours but we were there independently and loved it. Large, comfy room with a spectacular view. Don't miss out on the restaurant which is a real find. High quality bistro-style food in the depths of the Highlands.
Can't believe nobody has reviewed them before this!
