“Excellent group accomodation for the price in this area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2011

This review is for Nethy Station, the smaller of the Abernethy Bunkhouses.

The bunkhouse is a quaint conversion of an old Speyside Way railway station, and makes good use of the layout, with two goup seating areas and lots of space and quirky little secret bedrooms. Although with just four toilets and showers it might be a bit of a squeeze were it full to capacity. The same can probably be said for the kitchen, which has two ovens/hobs and two fridge/freezers although the space within the kitchen doesnt really allow for too many cooks! There is a bbq and fire area on the old platform, which is accessable from the front of the building and makes for a great base in the Cairngorms, whatever your trip is working around.

We didn't need to use the drying room, which might have been pretty snug if the house were full to capacity and everyone needed to use it at once, but again, if your group is less than around 20 it would be fine.

The hosts are extremely generous, friendly and accomodating, sociable without intruding on our time away. And the fact that only the number of people who physically turn up are charged for, subject to a minimum, with the whole bunkhouse being exclusively one party's makes this an exceptionally value for money stay.

All in all, if you are looking for cheap group accomodation in Nethy Bridge or the surrounding area, I would definately recommend Nethy Station

Thank you so much for that Rebeccyannie. As you say space is at a premium when the place is full, hence the last beds are free! Interestingly the Quality Assurance criteria for showers and toilets is 1 to 13! It is really useful to see your comments because we do not need to have a drying room at all but we felt it was important and so fitted one! If you are who I think you are (!) you were a lovely group so thank you very much for taking the time to write a review.

Patricia and Richard were absolutely fantastic – they couldn’t have been more accommodating to a stag do – they were extremely helpful in assuring that our weekend went to plan and were accommodating when we needed to get in early to refrigerate all our refreshments. I can speak on behalf of the tour group in saying that it was one of the most enjoyable weekends we have ever had. The bunkhouse is in such a great location and has all the space and equipment you require for a quality break in Scotland. Thank you both for making it such a memorable break.

I can never work out who you guys are - so thank you even more wholeheartedly as I cannot respond personally! We do pride ourselves on our support for groups because we have ONLY dealt with groups for nearly 30 years. We understand the particular problems - it is simply NOT like booking for a large family!

Took a party of 14 on a Stag Do and stayed in the Station. The accommodation was perfectly suited to a large all male group. There was ample parking and the Station was in very quite, private, location. Very practical building. Perfectly suited to a group looking to enjoy the Cairngorms. 20 minutes from Aviemore. The variety of bedrooms was great fun! Excellent and friendly welcome from owner. Great catering.

Wow! Thanks guys! We seem to be specialising in stags and hens now!! I am a bit concerned that you painted such a great picture everyone will think that we're the Ritz! Come back soon - we have a Stag Party later in the year which is the third in the family to come to Nethy Station!

This was my first trip to the Scottish Highlands...and it won't be my last!

Stayed the weekend at this location with a mixed group of 40 friends and acquaintances, to celebrate a number of birthdays in the group. We were all delighted with the choice.

If you're looking for a practical, warm venue in the Highlands that will house you and your friends, this is it. We used it as a base to explore the Cairngorms in the day and place to let our hair down in the evening.

Accommodation is spartan bunkrooms. In our case, three bunkbeds stacked up, which i thought was great! Some of the bigger people in our party (>20 stones size) had a little trouble squeezing into them but were eventually comfortable.

The *bar* room provided a great atmosphere to mingle in the evenings, play music and sing songs. Having a pool table and charming curiosities decorating the walls added to the ambience. Indeed, so did the snow!

Richard (the host) was warm, friendly and welcoming. On our second evening he laid on a great spread and everyone left the dining room feeling very full up indeed! When I got home (500 miles away) I realised I had left something very important behind in my bunk room! I called Richard and without any trouble he found the item and posted it safely back to me.

Overall, great value for money, great location and fantastic hosts.

We couldn't have asked for a nicer group. A pleasure to deal with from start to finish - so we did add a few extra items to the food stock! We would look forward to you returning any time at all! I do understand that taller, wider people find the bunk beds a wee bit on the 'cosy' side! As they are all built in, we are a bit stuck, but I think people were smaller when we built them! See you guys back soon!

I work for a charity called WildHearts which runs a large endurance event called the WolfTrek - a 45 mile run or walk from Forres all the way to Cairngorm Mountain. We have been delighted to use Nethy Station as the main 'Rest Stop' for our participants for the last 3 years - its in a perfect location right off the Speyside Way and just a minutes stroll into the village. There's great access too to Abernethy Forest and the paths around the river, which form the final section of our route. The kitchen facilities are brilliant - we use them right through the night to prepare over 200 rounds of soup and snacks for our weary participants and the dorms are great for enabling marshals and volunteers to get some rest. There is lots of space inside and out, and plenty of parking too. Booking was really simple too and the owners can recommend lots of activities to do in the area. We will definitely be back again in 2011!

The owners made the process of organising a group trip very simple indeed. Charging per head really helps if people drop out of a trip. The lodge is very well equiped and the bar is fantastic. We bought a couple of kegs from the local Cairngorm Brewery. It was very simple to 'plumb in' and tasted great. Recommend the Sheepshagger. the lodge is also perfectly situated for activities. Not too close to the bustling Aviemore, though close enought to nip in for supplies. My thanks to the owners, Richard and Patricia.

Many thanks for that. We do try to help and we believe that paying by the head makes Group organisers' lives somewhat easier! You were in Nethy House as that is the one with the bar!

Took a group of 18 teenagers for a weekend of activities and the space in the house made it more enjoyable for all the leaders as there were lots of games for the young and old to enjoy. The cooking area and the scullery for cleaning up was in great condition and the cooks had everything needed to hand to be able to cook for 24 of us altogether with seating to be able to accomodate everyone at the same time.

Thanks for those compliments Mags04. We try to make sure the place is as good as it can be for the price but I need to point out that you were in Nethy House which can sleep up to 65. I do not want to mislead people into thinking it is spacious if they come with 65! Everyone can fit in and eat together but it is relative!
