After driving from Peebles, our sat nav told us we had arrived but we didn't believe it. We were on the edge of a housing estate and there were no signs outside this old building that looked kind of like a castle. So we drove up to the place and read the plaque on the wall and it was indeed the hotel. It looks a bit shabby from the outside but once through the door it looks very impressive, a lovely old staircase and dark wood. We had booked the Mackenzie suite as we have 2 kids (9 & 13). When we were shown to the suite, we couldn't believe our eyes. We had our own turret entrance, and the suite is bigger than most people's flats. We had a huge living/dining room, corridor, bathroom with shower & roll-top bath, main bedroom with super-king bed and twin room with shower for our kids. We overlooked fields to the side and rear. We have stayed in a lot of hotels around the world but never in anything this big, we were stunned. Both bedrooms were very well furnished and looked impressive. I decided to enjoy the lovely bath, but soon gave up as the water pressure was so low it would've taken half an hour to half fill the bath, so had a shower which was ok. A few walls needed a new lick of paint and polli-filler, but all the bedding & furniture was clean. We ate in the restaurant which again was in need of re-decoration, but the food was very good. After dinner I was given a very short ghost tour (I'm into that!), by a friendly member of staff and we had a drink in the bar. Our bed was so comfy, we all had a good sleep. Breakfast was good although we had to wait ages for a member of staff to appear to tell us where to sit and take our order. We feel we had good value for money, and I am very glad we had such amazing accommodation as I am aware other people haven't. This hotel could be something quite special, if only the owners can spend the money it needs on a total re-furb. I would stay again but only in the Mackenzie suite.
