We stayed overnight before a friends wedding, preferring to stay away from the venue hotel to add a bit more to the weekend away. The old country house set in it's own gardens was quaint and oldie world, and reached by way of a very challenging and rough driveway. Staying overnight in someone else's stately home is not an experience you get every day and that on it's own was worthwhile. The library was warm and welcoming and pre dinner gins added to that sense of occasion. The huge double bedroom with ensuite bathroom was lovely and decorated in a plush style. We had dinner at an extra cost, which was a nice home cooked meal, without being extravagant. The whole experience was totally different from what you are used to in real life and I'm glad we did it. One or two little drawbacks though. The bedroom was cold throughout, and this Spartan environment was a drawback. The upkeep of a building of the size and age of Meikle Wartol requires a lot of resource. Consequently the house has to pay it's way by means of a B&B and the attitude conveyed was one of needing to, but reluctantly inviting strangers in to stay. This is shame as it slightly detracts from the overall enjoyment of staying in a place of such history.
