My partner, daughter and myself have just returned from Combe Grove Manor. We had previously stayed at another Paramount Signature hotel at Stratford upon Avon and thought it was excellent. Hoping this was going to be on the same par. Unfortunately it was not, the standard was lower, but still acceptable.
We stayed for three nights, the evening meal was served from 7pm, which when you go with children is a little late. But you can choose from the snack menu, but this got a little repetitive. The standard of food is very good but expensive and the service was a little slow.
We had a family room in the annex which was clean and comfortable with a terace and great views over the valley. The downside was there was no trouser press and the shower was fixed to the ceiling so no good to just wash your hair. The water in the bath and basin was also slow to run away.
Parking was a bit hit or miss as the hotel has a coutry club and the gym was very popular with the locals.
There was an indoor and outdoor pool. We only used the outdoor pool, but children on weekdays are only permitted to use it from 1pm to 5.30 pm, which was very restrictive and the gym members use it with all their families, so it gets very busy.

  • Liked — the views
  • Disliked — the time restriction for children in the pools.

We stayed in the Main house of CGM in room 10 on the top floor with stunning views of the verdant rolling hills. We booked through lastminute two weeks beforehand (and the first wk of school hols!) for less than gbp 140/night including breakfast. The value for money was unbeatable. Having moved recently to the UK from the US, staying in the Main House gave us the quintessential country house hotel experience. Room 10 was charming with a sloped ceiling and toile wallpaper; it was spacious and clean enough to allow our 10month old to happily climb about and fit a travel cot in easily. Our only gripes were in regard to the ventilation, or lackthereof, worsened by a faulty air conditioner unit.

That said, the rest of the hotel was lovely, with amazing views of the hillside from the breakfast rooms and the outdoor Eden restaurant. Dinner one balmy evening at Eden was delicious (check out the grilled club sandwich), although there was a distinct wasp problem. We were also overcharged for a phantom glass of wine, but the staff graciously refunded the charge without question. The staff in general on all counts were very professional.

As CGM is also a country club, the pool and gym areas can be a bit crowded, but having these amenities plus golf and tennis courts a stone's throw away makes it all worthwhile. Proximity to Bath (assuming you are not blowing 9quid on taxis each way as a previous post suggests) is excellent and parking was not a problem. Our family would definitely stay here again if we return to Bath. Definitely in the recommend camp.

  • Liked — quintessential country house hotel feel in the Main House
  • Disliked — broken air conditioner, very stuffy room condition
  • Tips/Secrets: — stay in the main house (the garden house did not appear to have the same cache)

My fiancee and I booked a room at Combe Grove Manor. We wanted somewhere to stay while visiting Bath, and from the photos this place looked great. The hotel was fabulous, our room was in the annex, but we had a window box seat overlooking the countryside. The views were great, the food and room service were also excellent. The only downside was the proximity to Bath, all the areas we wanted to see were about 2 miles away and neither of us drive (why drive in London anyway?). The first day we just walked around the hotel grounds and enjoyed being away from the hectic life. The second day we took a cab into Bath, spent the whole day exploring (I am an architecture freak so that was like being in heaven), and then got a cab back to the hotel in the evening. For our 2 night stay, it was just about perfect. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice relaxing break!

My girlfriend and I spent the weekend at Combe Grove Manor and had an absolutely fabulous time. We booked it through Active Hotels and got a very good deal on a standard double room. When we arrived we was welcomed and given our room and to our great shock we was given a suite, which was breath taking (room3). The views from this room were lovely, but it would hard to look around anywhere at the hotel and not love the view. The standard of the whole hotel was very high and it was extremely clean and comfortable. The food was great, both in the hotel and in the bistro situated in the garden and very reasonably priced.

The staff were always very helpful and polite and made sure that the little extra's were there....such as printing off directions to Glastonbury for us. We spent a lot of the weekend relaxing in the pool and steam room and indulged on the sunday in some beauty treatments, which were very nice and reasonably priced.

We will most definately be going back and would reccommend it highly.

I stayed at the Combe Grove Manor with my girlfriend as part of a dozen strong wedding party in May of this year. As several reviewers have already written the location is fabulous - amazing scenery and views and if only the weather had been better we could have explored the beautiful grounds. Our stay started poorly when we arrived at gone 2pm, (the stated check-in time) and found our room wasn't ready. This wasn't a huge issue in itself as we were informed to leave our luggage in the reception area and it would be taken to our room as soon as it was ready. To pass the time we visited the Bistro Bar area which seemed pleasant enough and met up with some friends. On returning to the reception area about an hour later we managed to check in and proceeded to our room. As our luggage wasn't in reception we naturally assumed that it had been taken to our room. Unfortunately this wasn't the case and a series of several anxious phone calls by me and visits by staff members ensued to try and locate it. After 40 minutes we had located all but my suit - (pretty important when you are there for a wedding) - and this was eventually found in the Housekeepers Office in another part of the building. After sorting out my luggage fiasco I was advised that another of our party had had their suit carrier also misplaced and I was then off searching for more luggage. I realise that mistakes happen but what I found most annoying was the total lack of information coming back from the reception staff. I work in a service industry myself and I can't stress enough the importance of keeping the customer regularly informed - whether it is good, bad or indifferent news. I found I was regularly advised that I would be called back only to hear nothing and found myself repeatedly chasing for updates.

After the luggage issue was resolved the stay largely improved. Our room was ok, not a 4 star in my opinion as the bathroom was clean but shabby and too many of the light fittings were faulty and several bulbs were dead.
We didn't eat in the Bistro Bar but we did have the wedding breakfast in a private room off of the library - (which strangely had no books in it). I found the food pretty tasty though others in the party weren't so keen. Other than the reception staff who appeared fairly obsessed with talking to each other via short wave radios I found the rest of the staff very helpful and friendly. The Fitness Centre is also a nice touch although the layout is slightly odd as you have to get changed and then walk down several corridors and up 3 flights of stairs to get to the indoor swimming pool.

I plan to return to Bath for a longer stay in order to more fully explore the beautiful surroundings but it’s highly likely we will stay elsewhere.
