We planned to use CGM as a bit of pampering after a week in a self catering barn in Cornwall. It looked great from the brochures and the Web, and the initial reaction (other than not being offered help with our bags when we pulled up) was good. We had a room in the main building with a wonderful view over the valley. But it went downhill after that. The room was scruffy, taps persistently dripped, lights didn't work, there was a previous occupant's socks under the chair and the air was stuffy from hot air being expelled from kitchen fans which also ran most of the day and into the night.
Service from the staff was enthusiastic but erratic and it all fell apart on the second night with warm drinks due to the failure of the seemingly only fridge, food being delivered with different ingredients than advertised, a single, endlessly repeating CD playing as music in the Bistro from a CD player on the floor and cracked glasses.
Breakfast was even worse with orders wrongly delivered, dirty cutlery, food left on the floor, cold toast, cooked food arriving within a minute or so of ordering so obviously not freshly cooked and when we were still eating fruit and cereal, exactly the same food turning up 20 minutes later after repeated requests for our cooked food having been kept hot under a lamp somewhere, cellophane wrapped pastries and rude staff saying they were too busy to assist when the restaurant had only 10 people in it!
The final insult was a bill being presented with a significantly higher room rate than in our confirmation. Needless to say, we didn't stay our full number of nights and headed home early - spending the saved money on lunch at Le Manoir Quat'Saisons!
For its location - CGM could be lovely, but the management last year (and seemingly this year from these reviews) seem incapable of exploiting it.
