“Beautiful setting, disappointing rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

This ought to be a great place to stay - the main house which incorporates the restaurant is lovely but the rooms - around the corner in a modern building - are rather uninspiring and basic. Booked a weekend break so it was fine for the money but i wouldn't bother again.

Room Tip: Could have a little front garden. If there are rooms in the main house request them!

I recently booked the £119 DB&B spa package which includes 2 treatments. This was really good value especially as we got upgraded to premium room in the main house and the restaurant has 2 AA rosettes. The location is about £10 in a taxi from town so a bit far out if there for an extended stay without a car. The building and grounds are really special with amazing views but of course when a building is listed there are limitations to modernity and convenience so it won't suit everyone. (No lift for example). The hotel is thinly staffed so service was a bit slow but as we were on a lazy spa retreat we didnt mind and enjoyed the leisurely pace of life there. I would only go to this hotel in the summer as the country club and most of the bedrooms are not in the main house and you would have to walk across the grounds in all weathers. We did not find the hotel to be dirty, maybe a bit crumbly and in need of some tlc in parts but we really enjoyed our stay.

My friend and I purchased this one night stay through lastminute which included dinner, bed, breakfast, two mini spa treatments and use of facilities etc. We paid about £115 each and I have to say this was PHENOMENAL value!
Arrived at the hotel and was greeted by a friendly chap called Samuel who booked us in, told us about the hotel, the local area, the spa etc and were delighted to hear we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a larger room with its own private terrace and a pool view!
The room was lovely - great view, clean and spacious etc. We had dinner included in our meal and it was just wonderful! we ended up with a beautiful table overlooking the grounds and were presented with a three course menu with several varied choices. My friend and I chose completely different meals and both were amazing quality and taste. The waiter (maybe restaurant manager) who was French was lovely, a very attentive and friendly guy who is an asset to the staff team.
Had a wonderful sleep in the comfortable beds, and made our way to breakfast the following morning to find that the table we said we loved had been reserved for us again - lovely touch! The breakfast was plentiful, fresh, well presented etc - hot and cold selections so something for everyone. Very tasty!
We then had our mini spa treatments - I had a facial and my nails done Samantha (I think, age 20, dark hair....!?!). Really enjoyed them - she was professional, attentive, and I didn't feel rushed as can often be the case with "inclusive" treatments with this kind of deal. My friend had a different therapist who she said was also fabulous.
We spent a good few hours around the lovely outdoor pool - just the right temperature, and children had "timed" slots so there was plenty of time for adults to chill in a more relaxed environment if you wanted to. View from pool was just stunning, we were so lucky with the weather and it felt as if we were in the Med somewhere.
Truly had a great time - I was a bit worried about the mixed reviews before we went, but we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The hotel is a very old country house and therefore if you are after sterile, clean lines then this isn't the place for you. It had a certain olde worlde charm and was a little "shabby chic" in places, but this just adds to the charm and character - you are in historic Bath after all! if you are after great value for money in somewhere that has personality, is clean, offers good food etc then this will suit you!
I don't suppose there are many places within a 10 minute drive of central Bath that offer a 3 course dinner, bed and breakfast and two spa treatments for a little over £100 per person!
Thanks again for a wonderful stay and special thanks to Samuel on reception, the beauty therapists, the friendly guy in the al fresco bar (who was from Plymouth Uni), the French guy in the restaurant, and the various other staff that all said "hello" or "good morning" when we passed them. Would definitely return, especially on such a good deal. We were blessed with great weather which was obviously the icing on the cake, but credit where credits due!

beautiful setting, ay you drove into the grounds they are well kept with lots of wildlife, however this was a misleading first impresion.

the room was on the third floor of the lodge, no lifts! not the easiest thing to do after a six hour car journey, negotiating al those stairs with luggage for two people for 6 days.
the room was very small, very very hot, no air conditioning and only a small window to open .

complimentary tea coffea and water but because of the heat the water was very warm ...

first night we booked a table in the bistro, very limited menu, very very slow service, food was nice...but expensive for what it was and salad consisted of dressed lettuce...had to ask several times for things staff appologetic but this didnt appear to change anything. the main resteraunt in the hotel only offered a set 3 course meal for 37.50 per person per meal, if you do not eat 3 courses you still pay 37.50 tried the bistro again mid-week again to be waiting 45 minutes for bar meals......apologies again ... hence apart from breakfast we did not dine at the hotel again.

some staff were very polite and helpful, cheerful while others were miserale and verging on rude and arrogent.

the hotel is a beautiful building in a gorgeous setting but there was no literature about it this was disappointing, apart from a book on bath there was little other information available, on anything. i would expect to fid an information pack about the area, recommending visits and must sees. although there was an outdoor and indoor pool we did not use the facilities, if the weather had been poor the pool and spa would have been used.

if i had paid full price for this break i would have been very disappointed, as i got at a discounted rate it was acceptable, dont think i would visit again.

Room Tip: rooms on ground floor of the lodge have a terrace and tables and chairs. allow plenty of time if eat...

I stayed here with my boyfriend for a birthday getaway. Staff were friendly and chatty on arrival. We stayed in a deluxe room which was on the 2nd floor. The room was very warm and it is located in the roof and it was a very hot weekend! Soon sorted our by having the air con on. Wonderful views from the room. We had a sandwich in the Eden Bar which was quite pricey, we ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich but there was no sign of any pickle! We also used the swimming pool which was fairly average but clean. Nice sun terrace off the back of the swimming pool. Bathroom was fairly clean however we did not fancy using the shower mat as had gone orange! Breakfast was nice with a good selection. Only a five minute drive into Bath which is ideal.

We stayed five days as a romantic retreat. The location is great, 15 minutes drive to Bath and in a lovely setting. The garden and views are amazing. Nevertheless the rooms are disappointing. They are dated, the bathroom was of a 2-star hotel, run down, needing a paint job and a good clean. We were there when the weather was nice, but unfortunately the windows opened only half inch so the room was very hot to sleep in.
There is an indoor swimming pool, but it is part of a Country Club and therefore not integrated in the hotel, you had to get outdoors, go to the Club's reception, sign-in, change, shower, swim, shower, change back and then walk outdoors back to your room. Ideally access should be from the comfort of your room.
The stuff were very friendly and breakfast was ok. Overall mixed feelings, as there is so much potential to make a great hotel if it was cleaner and updated.

Room Tip: First floor rooms have a terrace and seem nicer.
