Back last week from a 10 day break at the Hotel Merce. I had booked a complete package, half board, flights with Easyjet, transfers and airport parking at Luton, all for less than £850 for two people so wasn't expecting too much. Everything ran on time, reception at the hotel very welcoming, plenty of maps etc to show where we were. Yes, rooms are dated but clean and comfortable with good showers, serviced every day without fail. Church in front of the hotel with chimes on quarter hour adds to the charm but not a problem as they cease at midnight until 8.00 am next day. Only problem regarding noise is that the hotel is in a residential area surrounded by narrow streets which funnel any noise upwards. Refuse collectors doing their thing in the early hours and local shop keepers opening their shutters in the early morning take a bit of getting used to.! Food in the hotel is very good, not sure how on earth they do it for the price charged. Yes, if you are one of those who only eat "British" food, you might struggle a bit after a few days but there were so many good things to choose from we never at any stage felt short changed. Some have complained that what was on offer was not replenished when running low, we didn't see any evidence of that. Again, if you are of the type that likes to pile up your plate, eat as quickly as possible and exit then you may experience this but if you like to enjoy your meal and take time over it, it was never a problem. The dining room staff work really hard to clear and re-lay tables so we never struggled to find a table, even at peak times. The bar area's were a pleasant place to sit, prices were reasonable for a hotel and some of the entertainment was surprisingly good. As a resort, Pineda is exactly what it says on the tin - Quiet! That's ok though as it was what we went for. Lots of low key bars and cafe's in squares with fountains and trees where you could enjoy a coffee or a beer (or two!) amongst the "locals" Even stood outside a hall listening to a local choir practice one evening! Easy walk to town, 5 minutes? 10 minutes to sea front, maybe 10-15 to station. Easy walk to Calella one way along the sea front, maybe 40 minutes the other way to Santa Susannah? Both with far more nightlife and shopping, if that is more your style. All in all, remember that this is a two star hotel, please don't go expecting five star luxury, you won't get it but what you will get is a good base in a nice town, very good food, friendly and helpful staff all at a very reasonable price.
