“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

The day I went there were huge waves so take care if you are not a good swimmer as the pools are quite deep and the waves come quickly. Listen out for the lifeguard blowing his whistle as this indicates when a wave is coming. Entry is very reasonable at only E1.50 with changing rooms and toilets. The cloakroom/locker room was not open when I went. Be careful where you leave your belongings because they can get swept into the pools if a big wave comes. Water didn't seem cold to me but someone else on the minibus thought it was too cold (around 21C).

“Wonderful rock pools”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

Have visited the rock pools at Porto Moniz a good few times .The town is a nice quiet place but its main attraction is the rock pools. To see them when it is fairly calm is nice but to see them in a gale is great as i have several times is a sight to see.I would say the rock pools at Porto Moniz is my favourite place in the north of the island

“Fantastic unique attraction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

We drove up to the lava pools from Funchal and had a very enjoyable afternoon there. It is only 1.50 entry per person and there are full changing facilities and a little cafe. It was a completely unique experience to swim in these pools and was great fun. The sea comes in over the far edge creating a natural wave pool! Some people were sitting on the wall where the waves crashed over and were having fun being swept off! There is also a little diving area outside of the main pool. It was very popular with adults and children alike.

The changing rooms were clean and there is a secure supervised locker area you can use for 1 euro. There is also cheap parking nearby.

Definitely worth a visit!

“Concrete alongside nature”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

When you arrive, you may be slightly disappointed to see that the pools are not completely natural, but after a while, the sixties public pool style grows on you. Because it is right by the sea, on a windy day at high tide you can sit on the separating wall and get thrown into the pool by giant waves, or splashed with white foamy spray. If you don't like that sort of thing, there is a diving board that you can jump off of into the sea. It is a good idea to do this first then run to get into the pool, because the pool will seem a lot warmer. If neither of these are things you enjoy, you can explore the pool by swimming under bridges and around natural lava formations, and to add to the fun, bring goggles or a mask. There are many interesting features and creatures under the water. Best to go in summer though.

“Lovely unique 'beach'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

We loved this unique place. From lying in the sun to watching people jump off the boards/ledges into the sea, to swimming in the pools, it was all great fun. The water was gorgeous - clear and not too cold. We snorkelled in the sea - the only place we managed this in Madeira.

For €1.50 this is a must-do if you're in the area. Take snorkel and mask!
