“Beautiful agriturismo in wonderful setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2010

We had a wonderful time at Montepetreto. The farm is located in a beautiful spot in the hills in between 1000 olive trees that Roberta, the owner, grows to produce her own olive oil.
There is one thing that you will have to pay attention to: Pets are allowed. So if you have an allergy like I do, make sure you bring enough antihistamins, in case you are in an apartment right after a pet has left. Because of my cat allergy I had to be on antihistamins for the whole stay.
The farm provides lovely views of the lake and the surrounding countryside. We stayed in Ginestra which is probably the most beautiful of the apartments with a gorgeous terrace.
Montepetreto is far enough away from the main roads as not to be bothered by any noise, yet conveniently located to go and see the many beautiful sights nearby: Perugia (only 20 mins away), Gubbio, Spello, Spoleto, Panicale, Todi and of course ASSISI are all well worth a visit. My recommendation: Bribe your children with the lovely swimming pool where they can spend half the day and take them sightseing for the remainder of the day. The owner Roberta was lovely. She even made a cake for us to bring on the long drive home!! Thanks again. I can wholeheartedly recommend this place.

We stayed in the Olmo apartment which is perfect for a family of four and spent a week discovering the area around Lake Trasimeno. Our teenage boys enjoyed the fabulous swimming pool and we appreciated the hillside setting and wonderful views of the Lake. We had fun exploring the towns set on the lake particularly the beautiful Castiglione and made trips into Tuscany and to Perugia. There are plenty of restaruants to choose from in nearby San Feliciano and the sunsets on the lake are unbelievable.

The old country farm run for 20 years by a couple bored of living in Rome; they loved, they cure it, so the place is like in a fairy tale; visitors feel like at home and are warmly welcome; number of independent apartments (bath and kitchen) with fabulous view at the lake (unforgettable sunsets) plus swimming pool (stairs, not ladder!!!) give ideal opportunity to take a rest; the only weak point is slight noise from near local road, might bother delicate souls.

We spent five unforgettable days in Podere Monte Petrero. Here is why:

1.Excellent location if you want to explore Umbria.
2.Roberta who owns the place is the nicest woman, the dream host and always wants to help.
3.Everything is cozy and clean.
4.The panoramic view to Lake Trasimeno is absolutely breathtaking.
5.Very nice swimming pool.

We stayed in Ginestra for four weeks in Sept. and Oct. We were very pleased. The apartment was roomy for two. Very quiet--no street noise, minimal noise from our upstairs neighbors (our traveling companions). The bathroom was modern and large. The bedroom was comfortable with plenty of closet space. The kitchen had a full sized refrigerator and four burners, but no oven or microwave. The sitting room with TV comfortably seated four. The open floor plan included the kitchen, dining area (seats four to six), and sitting room. Tile floors. The farmhouse was remodeled into apartments about 15 years ago and has been well maintained. Ginestra has the largest porch with covered seating for six and a nice view of the lake. We enjoyed many meals and "happy hours" on the porch. In summary, the apartment was better than advertised and we felt a very good value.

The owner/hostess, Roberta Frigiiolini, was cordial and helpful. She speaks near perfect English as she once taught English. We interacted with her on an almost daily basis regarding her olive farm, restaurants, sites in the area. Her dog, Linda, was a delight--visiting us a couple of times per day to hang out on our porch.

The setting is a working olive farm. La signora was preparing for the harvest while we were there. The farm sits well above the road and therefore no road noise. The grounds were beautifully maintained with potted flowering plants, an almond tree and fruit trees.
The pool looked nice with wonderful views, but was closed for the season.

Favorite activities included: 1. hanging out at the lake view coffee shop/bar at San Feliciano (about a mile from our apartment) drinking coffee or wine. Sometimes we would walk/jog there. Sometimes we would drive. 2. Shopping at local markets for food. 3. Taking day trips to nearby hill towns including Assisi, Orvieto, Cortona, etc.
4. Visiting the other towns around Lago Trasimeno and visiting one of the islands.

We had a rental car and used it daily. Our friends used public transportation and found it adequate. There was a bus stop about a kilometer away that would connect to a train station. We took a day trip by train to Florence.

Overall, we were very pleased with the apartment and the area. It fit out purposes almost perfectly. Internet access could have been better. La signora did offer it to guests, but it was in her apartment only. We did find inexpensive access nearby in Passignano (5 miles) at the train station. The only other negative I can think of is that we did get a couple of mosquitoes in our room the first two weeks of the trip as the windows are not fully screened.

If you are interested in Umbria, Frances Mayes in her book "Bella Tuscany" describes the things she did and saw in her loop around Lago Trasimeno.

We have stayed at Monte Petreto, Lago Trasimeno many times. Roberta Ajo Frigiolini, the owner, speaks very good English as well as German and of course her native tongue, Italian. There are many apartments at Monte Petreto namely, Mandorlo (4 persons), Ginestra (4 persons), Tiglio (4 persons), Quercia (3 persons), Olivo (3 persons) and Olmo (6 persons). Most have a view of the lake (Lago Trasimeno) from high up the hill where her home is set (Monte Petreto). The views are spectacular. There are many places to visit from here too e.g. Cortona, Castiglioni de Lago and Perugia. There are very good supermarkets too.

Roberta is extremely friendly and an animal lover which is why we like her so much. She has a beautiful mongrel bitch called Linda and 3 cats (all moggies; 2 black cats (Lorenza and Petra) and one grey (Rosa). In my opinion, if you don’t like animals the creatures would know and would leave you alone.

We have stayed mainly in the apartment which is called Olivo, and this is one of the apartments which has stunning views of the end of Lake Trasimeno. The other end of the lake can be seen at the delightful town of Cortona made famous by Frances Mayes book. There is a small town nearby called San Savino, which stands on another hill across from Monte Petreto and looks delightful from the apartments’ patios especially on misty mornings.

The apartments are simply and sympathetically decorated in accordance with the Umbrian style.

Roberta runs an olive farm and thus is often, in fact most days, seen working the groves on a tractor (which in itself is amazing for a woman in her 60s), up a tree, pruning, cutting grass or picking olives. She also grows other fruit trees and you can buy from her extra virgin olive oil and limoncello. Both are wonderful. She also runs a bed and breakfast from the farm if you prefer this type of holiday. She serves the most wonderful homemade marmalade, which she also sells.

A car is a must if you are going to holiday in Umbria because there is so much to see. In the nearby town of San Feliciano, only a few miles away you can get the best coffee we have ever had. This is at the bar next to the lake (I forget what the bar is called).

The only comment I would make is that the swimming pool was not available during a mid season break that myself and my husband took in April. This was a shame because we like to take our holiday during the wild asparagus picking season and it is nearly always hot then. Thus we would have appreciated a dip in a cool pool but other than that, we have enjoyed our stay here and recommend you do too.

  • Liked — Roberta. A very friendly hostess. And the views of the lake and surrounding countryside.
  • Disliked — I cannot think of anything I liked least!
