“Not just a Holiday ... It's an experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

We booked Cretaiole to enjoy the tranquility and peacefulness of Tuscany on our trip between Rome and Venice. We discovered so much more here. First the Morriciani family; Isabella was wonderful and being able to speak English made sure we had everything to start our week long holiday. Her itineraries for day trips are magnificent, right down to pictures of where to turn. We enjoyed a scenic drive and saw many beautiful churches thanks to her work. Carlo brought us wine and his English is pretty good - he gave us a full tour of their working farm and I really enjoyed his humor. Papa Luciano brought us fresh eggs and grappa on our second night and though we couldn't really understand each other we somehow communicated quite well. Mama Morriciani gave us fresh eggs from under the chicken and they were delicious. I wanted to stay on and become a part of their family. They are warm, generous and very genuine. They are Cretaiole. Second the scenery; It's a picture postcard of just what we thought Tuscany would look like and we spent time just sitting in the swing looking out over the valley. We received a bonus as we awoke to a fresh snowfall on our first day - beautiful. Finally, the accommodations; apartments were clean, spacious, and well equipped if you want to go to the coop and pick up food to cook. Plenty of firewood available for the winter fire and big fluffy towels. One note: we stayed in a bottom floor and it can be quite noisy on the stone floors from the apartment above. If you are noise sensitive choose a top apartment. It is rustic but charming and we would definitively return. Ciao Tuscany, Cretaiole and Morriciani's.

We were looking to do something different with our vacation and landed on the idea of staying in a single place in Tuscany to explore the area. Fortunately my wife had a friend who had here several years ago and really enjoyed it; said it was very well organized by Isabella and so easy to fall into the natural pace of the area. Wow, what a find. Of all the places we visited, after spending a month in europe, this is the one that we still talk about six months later. The apartment was better than advertised and everything in Isabella's book of recommendations and places to see were spot on. Fell in love with the Tuscany countryside. Saw pheasant and deer, snacked on cheeses and olives, and sipped great wine on a daily basis whle sitting in our courtyard after a day of poking around the little towns the dot the landscape. Having a group dinner with our hosts and fellow guests, making pici, wine tasting, olive oil testing - they were all icing on the cake.

We recently spent a perfect week at Cretaiole. Every detail was handled with the utmost care and our time was stress free and delightful. After a very long drive from Nice in pouring rain, we arrived very late in the evening and were met by Luciano. He personally took us into town and showed us where they had made dinner reservations for us. His kindness and care set the tone for the entire week. The next morning, Isa arrived to introduce us to Cretaiole and the Val d' Orcia also to arrange any tours and activities we wanted. Everything worked perfectly and the activities truly made our stay seem like we were living as temporary locals. Luciano, Liliana, Isabella, and Carlo are the perfect hosts, and we are looking forward to our next trip to Italy. If it was possible to give 10 stars, I would!

Room Tip: If you plan to cook, book early and get a room with a kitchen. I booked in July for November and go...

This was our second time at Cretaiole in 2 less than 2 years. We loved it so much the first time we recommended to our best friends for the second time - and it we celebrated a 50th birthday while there. Want the most memorable, true Italian experience? Then drink grappa with Luciano, make pasta with Isabella and learn about olive oil and farming from Carlo....and you will never want to leave. The Moricciani family makes you feel part of the family - - and we are already planning our next trip back!

Room Tip: The rooms at "the farm" are all specialized to the size of the party and all very, very ac...

Having returned to Cretaiole and the Moricciani family for the second time, we had much to look forward to as well as anticipating new experiences in the area. There is so much to do in the Val d'Orcia that you cannot run out of things to experience. Knowing that we would see our old friends, Isabella, Carlo and Luciano, just made it sweeter.

As you know, vacation time is so limited and precious in the US. This year, we encouraged four different couples of friends and family to stay with Isabella. We have confidence that our friends will be well taken care of by the Moricciani family and have one of the best vacations of their lives. It is wonderful to share this treasure with others.

We are experienced travelers, and prefer to stay in places where we can experience more of the local culture, vs a luxury resort. Without question, our week at Cretaiole was the best local vacation experience we have ever had. If you want 5 star luxury, room service, restaurant and spa, this is not the place for you. If you want to feel like you are living in Tuscany with the most wonderful friends and family, in a magical setting....you MUST go to Cretaiole.

We went in with extremely high expectations after reading all the accolades. We were still blown away. Everything you read here is true, and more! There are too many highlights to mention, but some worth noting: Isa's Travel Binder - Wow! EVERYTHING you need is in here. Driving tours, restaurant recommendations, GPS coordinates down to the parking space, pictures! Just grab your binder and go - it's almost like having Isa in the car with you. And by the way, she's always just a text or phone call away if you need anything.

Carlo speaks limited English, but is a great communicator and a wonderful host. One of the highlights of our week was the nightly visits with Luciano, complete with Vin Santo, grappa, and dancing!

Before traveling to Tuscany, I had planned out day trips throughout the region. After Isa's orientation talk, I threw my plans out the window and decided to leave myself in her hands. Best decision ever! We lived like locals. Ate in local restaurants. Saw places that are so far off the beaten path....driving dirt roads to stunning medieval castles, gorgeous vistas, etc! We thoroughly enjoyed olive oil tasting, wine tasting, the tour of the cheese farm, and the organized tour she arranged in Siena. You can do as much or as little as you want.

Pienza is a gorgeous little town. Our favorite restaurant was Buca de Enea, and the hospitality we received there from Antionio and his wife. It was a big convenience to have the free parking at family farm on the edge of town.

Our room was clean, comfortable, and totally taken from a Tuscan postcard! We had a fire every night, and Isa even arranged for a fire-side massage for two in our room on the last evening.

There isn't enough room here to write everything I loved about Cretaiole. Just go!!!

You can spend less money to stay in the heart of Tuscany but you will not get the experience of living like an Italian family for a week. Isabella, Luciano, Carlo, and everyone at this lovely agritourismo (farm stay vacation) take you into their family for a week of heaven in the beautiful Tuscan countryside just outside of Pienza and near the famous wine-producing town of Montepulciano.

Your week is as active as you want it to be: Isabella plans excursions to Sienna, the wineries, even the monastery that was featured in "The English Patient" and now serves fabulous gourmet dinners. She is an amazing tour guide and you will see ancient ruins under the town of Pienza. You will even learn how to make pici, a thick spaghetti.

You can sample Carlo's wine, Luciano's grappa, the farm cheeses and sausages, and homemade ricotta. There are several community dinners and you will find new friends from around the globe.

Or if you don't want to be so active you can lay in the hammock and let the gentle Tuscan breeze blow or play with the farm cats.

The whole family welcomes you and treats you are "family" for one wonderful week. Isabella even spent over an hour on the phone with our rental car company to help us resolve a billing error, saving us over $200. She is amazing and this is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed. Well worth the money and we have many, many wonderful memories.

Room Tip: They are all good!
