“Great charming atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We have just arrived from Pienza. We stayed 7 days in Podere San Gregorio an unique place owned by the Luciano`s Family who also maintains the famous Agriturismo Cretaiole, in the same region. Podere San Gregorio is unique place because you can have the best of two words. You will stay in a Agriturismo (they produce wine, olive oil, pecorino cheese, eggs, ham), feeling a true family atmosphere and also will be within 200 meters from the restaurants from Pienza centre. You can explore the beautiful Val D’orcia by day and go out for a dinner at night and drink all the wine you like and then walk back to your house in safety, without using your car . Pienza is one great base for exploring Tuscany, being within 20 Km from Montalcino and Montepulciano and 50 KM from Siena, and it is a linear city, so you don’t have to hike mountains after you visit many cities on the top of the hills during the day. (I have seen some guys sweeting in despair carrying their luggage up on the hill in others cities).
You will receive a basket full of basics supplies for the breakfast when you arrive and can grab some eggs for free in every morning. We received a bottle of wine made in the agriculturismo as a welcome gift. There is a strategic Scoop Supermarket 20 meters from the agriculturismo where you can buy everything you need (if you like fresh bread every morning) or if you want to venture yourself in Tuscan cooking. The Agriculturismo will provide jam, biscuits, yogurt, coffee etc… The agriturismo will also give you a full personal comprehensive guide of everything you can do around the region.
You will have on your disposition a full equipped kitchen and a washing machine. So if you are tired at night, just eat in your room (our room has also a living room with a full kitchen).
We certainly stay again in Podere San Gregorio again and recommend it for everyone who wants to feel the day by day life of a true Italian family at a very reasonable price.
Thank you Luciano and Laura for your great hospitality.

“Great location for Pienza”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

We (family of 2 adults and 2 children 8 & 10) stayed in Podere San Gregorio 21-28 July. We booked the accommodation through the daughter in law of the owners as we had originally tried to stay at her agriturismo but it was full. She kindly put us onto her father in law and Podere San Gregorio. We had booked late in the year so our choices were limited, however, we had wanted to stay near Pienza so the location of Podere San Gregorio was perfect.

Podere San Gregorio is located on the outskirts of Pienza but is only a few minutes walk to the centre. It is situated on a road, however that didn't prove to be too much of a problem for us. The accommodation we booked consisted of a two bedroom apartment (La Vite & San Gregorio) - both bedrooms had their own en-suite and we had a living area including kitchen (dishwasher - bonus!). The wi-fi was pretty reliable and enabled the kids to keep in touch with their friends back home without additional cost. There were lots of towels provided and the apartment was really clean and spacious. All windows have mosquito nets on them so you can leave the windows open without fear of being eaten alive. As previous reviews have said, the owners speak no english whatsoever, and our Italian was pretty much at the same level, so communication wasn't easy, however the owner's daughter Laura is on hand to translate most of the time - that said however, the owners were lovely (Laura's father even took our kids out in the tractor on our last day!). We visited the store where they made the Prosciutto, cheese, wine and olive oil - we bought the Prosciutto and olive oil and managed to get Laura to vacuum pack the meat for us so we could bring it home as it was delicious.

Pienza is a really pretty little town - we wandered the streets most days and enjoyed sitting at the bar near the wall with a glass of prosecco looking out at the tuscan hills. We ate in a few restaurants - all of them served the usual Pisci (sp?) and boar sauce and various other local dishes. There's a good pizza place which does takeaway so that comes in handy when you've arrived back from a day out and it's too late to get a restaurant (they all seem to stop serving around 9pm). One restaurant we wouldn't recomment is The Garden which is near the play area at the opening to the centre of the town - the service here was really poor (although the view is spectacular); the waiter misunderstood what our order was and blamed us for the mistake. One thing we noted about Pienza were the random opening and shutting times: you could go to the town one day and see shop X open, then go back the next day at the same time and shop X was shut!

We visited Saltambero when we were there which was excellent fun for us all (about an hour away) - it's a place set in a forest where the kids (and adults!) can zip slide and climb through the trees for a couple of hours. The safety aspects were excellent as we were taken through instruction by one of the team and they watched us whilst we followed the instructions given. Make sure you take your own drinks as the selection was pretty poor and all that climbing is thirsty work.

Overall Pienza was great and the accommodation was great too if a little overpriced.

“A wonderful Tuscan experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

My partner and I stayed at San Gregorio for 6 days during a recent trip to Italy. The place is absolutely wonderful--clean room and private bath, fresh picked cherries, their homemade wines, proscuitto, and pancetta, and a short walk to the lovely and historic town of Pienza. Our hosts, Luciano, Liliana, and Laura, couldn't have been more accommodating, warm, and friendly. We felt we had met family and would absolutely go back again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the single room with a private bath. It has a small refridgerator, full complement of d...

“A genuine Tuscan experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

We LOVED our vacation to Pienza at this agriturismo in April 2012. On Spring Break with my family ( 2 children ages 5 & 7, and my parents), the five of us couldn't have been more comfortable. We took over the apartment and had ample space to spread out. The owners left a huge basket of breakfast goodies and we made italian coffee every morning in our kitchen. We spent four days and three nights at San Gregorio and explored Pienza, Montetiello, Moltepulciano, and Montalcino.

Pienza was by far our favorite hilltown. A quiet, small city, the kids were able to run around and play on a nearby playground without me worrying about cars and scooters. The views of Tuscany were incredible.

The beds were comfortable, large towels, plenty of hot water for showers, access to a nearby co-op grocery store, gas station, and pharmacy. A little close to the road, but we weren't affected by the noise. My girls loved the swing out front and playing with the kitties, dog, and bunnies. We got fresh eggs each morning from their chickens. The owners shared their wine, cheese, olive oil, and prosciutto cellar. We felt like we were a part of family-oriented, Tuscan treasure.

Room Tip: We heard street noise but it wasn't bothersome.

“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

This place was just perfect! A two minute walk from the town, spacious apartment, friendly owners and wonderful breakfast basket with fresh eggs every morning! We were invited by the owner to taste his wonderful wine and cured ham and bought some for our dinner which we ate by the fireplace!
The apartment was super clean, the rates were unbeatable, and the location is just perfect. It is a perfect central location for anyone who wants to walk, ride, or drive to the whole region.

Room Tip: Go for the one bedroom apartment; it easily sleeps 6 people and comes with a well stocked kitchen an...
