“Beautiful, charming villa with a wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2009

My husband and me stayed in this lovely villa for 5 nights. This is a beautiful, romantic place set in a Tuscan countryside with a great atmosphere. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and gives you the feeling of visiting a family home rather than a hotel. Our room was very spacious and clean, with beautiful view of the Tuscan hills. The location is great for traveling in Florence, Siena, the Chianti and east Tuscany.

If you are looking for a perfectly presented charming country home hotel in an idyllic location then this offers all that you might expect and more. Thank you to all of the staff and particularly Agnese who seems always to be there to help with any question on where to visit , restaurant suggestions and travel plans - or just to offer a coffee and pastries in front of the open fire. The breakfast is served in a quite outstanding setting and the home made food is perfect. In the summer there is a terrace outside that they serve breakfast on or you can enjoy a bottle of wine as the sun goes down. They really could not do more for you and the room that Agnese selected for us was again charming and spotless with wonderful views from its elevated position. The location is ideal for touring- you do need a car - and there are nearby villages with restaurants a plenty. This is a special place and we would recommend it - although we hope they will always keep a room available for when we return!

The bottom line - this villa is absolutely beautiful! A 17th century house built around a medieval watchtower it even has its own chapel. It belonged to the same family until early in the 20th century when, due to a lack of heirs, it was left to the church and became a monastery for 80 years. Now restored to full glory and stuffed with antiques, it is the perfect place for a peaceful, romantic break.

With fabulous views across the valley to the hills of Chianti (see photos but sadly cloudy when we were there), it is set in its own grounds with a lovely swimming pool and olive groves. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms but it was still lovely with a great bathroom but they also have separate apartments which would be great for families.

A delicious Continental breakfast is served in the old cellars (or outside when the weather's warm). There is a lovely library in which to sit and the staff is delightful. We just wish that they served dinner as the drive round to the carpark is very narrow after dark.

One piece of advice - when you first arrive it's further than you think out of Loro Cuiffenna. Just keep faith and keep going, looking at the signs for No. 40 and you'll find it.

My husband and I thought the villa was a great place to stay. Kind of hard to find, a bigger sign might be helpful. Our room was clean, big and very comfortable. All of the people who worked at the villa and stayed there, were kind and helpful. The location is perfect for Florence, but may be a little distant to other areas. But to me, the important things, cleanliness, room comfort, feeling of being in Tuscany, and kind staff were all first class.

This is a lovely, friendly place, up on a hill overlooking the Tuscan countryside. The one caution would be to be sure to arrive during the day. You'll want daylight to find your way up to Loro Ciuffenna and then to the hotel.

Not many hotels have their own 18th century (much newer than the hotel) chapel, but they have a beautiful little one off to one side of the hotel.

We were greeted warmly when we arrived, first by Paula, who, we discovered the next morning, provides the delicious breakfast, and then by Agnese. They were very gracious hosts and Agnese offered both a tour of the grounds and ideas for places to go and things to do.

The hotel is at the end of a hill surrounded by olive groves. We could look out over the valley to other small villages. The villa is very well restored and gives you the feeling of going back in time but with many amenities. Our room was a nice size and had a large bathroom. We awoke to the sound of roosters growing and church bells ringing. Breakfasts were very nicely presented and the buffet had new homecooked items every day. The breakfast area was in a part of the villa that was built in the 1300s.

The town of Loro Ciuffenna is not your regular tourist stop but was very interesting to walk about. We had several good meals in local restaurants. We travelled to many other towns in the Chianti Hills and to Siena from here. We very highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again.
