We stayed at La Balconata for 5 days and it was wonderful. The views across the valley were amazing and the area was so beautful and rustic. It was a real getaway from the daily grind.
The accomodation was really nice. It seemed to be typical Tuscan style with tiled floors and lots of wood beams in all the rooms. The bedrooms were quite basic, which was in keeping with the character, but they were comfortable and had everything that you would need in there. The room we were in had amazing views and even the bathroom window looked out across the valley. The lounge area was huge and really comfortable while the downstairs kitchen/ diner was spaceous and well equipped. Although breakfast was provided (and it was really good!) we were left to make use of the kitchen when we wanted, so we could make cups of tea etc whenever we felt like it. The house is split over 3 floors with the bedrooms upstairs, the lounge on the mid floor and the kitchen below. Although another couple were staying at the same time as us we were able to spread out and have our own space.
The garden was pretty amazing! There was a terrace where you could sit and admire the view while enjoying a glass of wine or 2, and as it was a traditional stepped garden, there was lots to see. The house is a working smallholding so there were chickens roaming aroung the garden as well. The overall feel of the house was laid-back and friendly, so it really helped us enjoy our time there.
Although the house was quite far from the town of Bagna di Luca there was a restaurant in the village that was open during the day and did serve coffees and lunches as well as evening meals, so if you didn't feel like going too far there was somewhere to go. We hired a car and I would recommend that people visiting this area do have transport as it is quite a way up a hill, and not really walking distance down in to town (although we saw people walking it!) It is really well positioned for visiting other areas, we visited Lucca and Barga while we were there as well as taking trips to some of the nearby towns and villages. There is a lot to see and do in the area. There are lots of historic places of interest as well as a really impressive swimming pool and lots of cafes where you can just sit and watch the world go by!
