“A lovely place to stay - especially for foodies.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

This was a great place to stay for two nights. The owner, Filaretos, was incredibly welcoming and although this was not the season for mushrooms, he took us on a two hour walk sampling wild asparagus and giving us an expert's view on the beautiful countryside.
He also advised us about the best local taverns and even joined us, giving us a fantastic insight into the local area. The rooms are lovely, the breakfast very good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to people who are interested in exploring a really unexpected area of Greece. Beautiful views from the rooms too.

Tom thank you very much. I enjoyed the trekking from Milopotamos to Limnionas beach and your company at the tavernas.
I would be happy to seeing again!

Our visit to Tsagkarada on the foothills of Mt Pilon and overlooking the Ageian sea was spoilt by dense fog which lasted 3 days.... an unheard of experience according to all the locals and our guesthouse owner. If you want some where different and a bse for some exhilerating mountain walks and what we were told are spectacular views and sceneery then this is your spot. One of the days we did get out for a 5 hour hike and it was wellw orth the strenous effort. The guesthouse itself is very different. A new recently built well appointed house with a wonderful warm inviting living room with a roaring log fire. Here guests can meet and chat, have a glass of wine, talk about their days adventures and plan for to-morrows. Our room was beautiful and probably the best bed we found in 10 days of travelling through Greece. Our only hesitation in not giving 5 stars was the weather and the breakfast. We found the breakfast to be stodgy and uninteresting and could not face the same again on the 3rd day. Otherwise a perfect spot for mountain trekkers.

Dear John

Thank you for your kind review. It was our pleasure too, chatting with you by the fireplace, when our trekking plans were canceled by the foggy March weather.
Your comments about our breakfast are truly appreciated. This is a traditional breakfast, awarded by the largest Greek gastronomy magazine, based on cheese and omelet with herbs or wild mushrooms, and with some seasonality, as regards fresh fruits and vegetables. Early spring in Pelion does not offer great variety in fruits and vegetables, which might be a problem for people on a low fat diet. We are currently working on some new ideas for this period of the year, which we shall be glad to present to you in your next visit to us.

Filaretos Psimmenos

Words cannot really describe the wonderful experience of staying in Amanita. It is a homey place, tucked in a quiet and beautiful spot of Tsagarada. Built and furnished in good taste, with attention to every detail, the place has a very good feel. Philaretos is an amazing host: from the directions of how to get there, to his welcoming home made berry licqueur, and the most amazing breakfast I have ever had (which was brunch really, available until 12pm)! His jams are out of this world, the bread he bakes is delicious not to speak of his omelettes. He was eager to show us walking trails, off the beaten track spots, recommend restaurants and share his vast knowledge of mushrooms! I think one should experience this place at least once per season! I am already looking forward to my next stay!

If you want to experience something different in a beautiful location in Greece that should be definitely Amanita. We have been there already twice and we are already planning our next visit.

Located in Tsagarada (Pelion), you have the option to visit sea or mountain depending on your mood.

On the other hand, if you want just to relax, Amanita is the right place to do so.
Rooms, each with unique theme, are totally harmonized with the surrounded environment. All of them are very clean. The beds and the pillows are very comfortable. Even the soap, the shower gel and the shampoo are high quality products (Apivita). The towels are really soft and smell lavender.

You wake up in the morning (even if that is a bit late) and a first class breakfast is made for you. Home made jams, home made bread, cheese pies, fresh fruits and many more....

You can stay on the main hall of Amanita and enjoy the fireplace with the sounds of nice music (mostly alternative, jazz, etc.). There is a bookshelf where you can read books or to watch a movie picking one from the available DVD collection. WiFi is available as well. Of course, if you are social you can meet and have interesting discussions with other visitors of Amanita.

The owners, Filaretos and Mariana, are excellent hosts. The will provide you with everything that you will ask for and are always discrete and kind. Depending the period you are going to visit Amanita, if you are lucky don't miss the daily excursions organized by the hosts.

Choose Amanita and you won't regret it.

We first visited Amanita 3 years ago and since then we keep coming back every year. Mount Pelion is such a magnificent, magical place and the location of the guesthouse so privileged- from skiing to swimming withing few minutes. Filaretos is the perfect host, he is genuinely kind, polite and you feel that the hospitality is from the heart! The environment and services project his calmness, love of nature and tradition, originality and good taste.
They say positive energy gathers around more positive energy; that must be true because every time we visit Amanita we get to know the rest of the guests, they are interesting, kind, fun people. People we had never seen before and instantly it feels like we knew them for ever. We all hang out together during breakfast, hiking and mushroom gathering, evening coffee and spoon sweets, having drinks at Scala, and it feels great.
Last but not least the breakfast in Amanita is a ritual. Most of the food is homemade and everyday there is something special on top of the classics. Even the simplest things taste better when prepared by Filaretos and Mariana. We love the fried mini cheese pies, the pancakes with petimezi, the cheese and green tomato jam, the toasts with kaseri cheese, the omelettes, the homemade bread, the cakes, all these served to your table, taking your time to enjoy them. I am missing Amanita already!

It was the first time that we deside choose the guest house despite the area and the location, for our winter vacation. We found Amanita accidentaly as searching on the web.
It was the best accident had ever happen to us!!
We enjoy it from the time we contact to book our room.
When we arrive we found a warm, clean and tastefull family appartment. The equipment had quality standards and the decoration was simple , human, with lots of love and what we appreciate and usually is difficult to find, not extravagant.
The mountain of Pelion is one of the best destinations in Greece.
Mountain and sea in a great combination with one of the most rich flora and fauna you can find.Nature lovers will have their paradise here. Also plently of hiking trails in and around Tsagarada village and in a 40 minute drive up in Hania's ski resort for the active ones.
All the above was just elements without the people who run and work this guest house.
Filaretos, Nikos and Katerina make our time there unique!!
We felt that knew them for many years and we are sure that will continue in the future to keep in touch with them and the place.
Breakfast was a unique experience also with home made bread, jams and delicacies with a tastefull surpise every morning. This is a role model breakfast for Greece.
We have a wonderfull walk with Filaretos, Nikos and two other guests to Damouchari bay through an old pavement and get plently of information for the history of Tsagarada village.
Lastly the absence of television in the appartment (actually it was there but only for playIng dvd) it helped to have more relaxing time.
For sure will be back with the family and friends and hope next time will be in November to collect mushrooms with Filaretos.
Amanita in Greek means mushroom.Taste it!!!

AMANITA is situated in a truly privileged location between mountain and sea on the eastern slopes of Mt. Pelion in the genteel village of Tsangarada in the Prefecture of Magnesia, Greece. Behind it soars Mt. Pelion, ancient home of the Centaurs; a mountain much sung of; a mountain where the trees cast deep shade and countless springs bubble forth. All around is the verdant countryside of Tsangarada with its renowned paths, centuries old trees, old stone fountains and bridges.AMANITA is a beautifully restored old mansion of the 19th century. The AMANITA Guesthouse consists of two buildings: the three-storey main house and a two-storey outhouse. We offer 6 accommodation options, 5 of which are located in the main house (2 suites consisting of 2 rooms, 1 three-bed room and 2 double rooms), and a self-contained, fully fitted 2-room apartment with its own kitchenette in the outhouse. The main house has two sitting areas, a breakfast room and a professional kitchen. We attach great importance to local cuisine.
