“Wonderful Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

Myself and hubby returned from our holiday at the Hotel Mediterranean yesterday (16/09/12) and can honestly say it was the best holiday we have ever had, from the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by Karen and soon settled into our large and comfortable room, it wasn't long before we had visited the pool bar and over a cold beer in a wonderful setting met Sonny and Jordan who had us laughing from the minute we met them. On our first night after dinner we decided to sit on our balcony for a while before having an early night to recover from our journey, we then met the people in our neighboring rooms, and early morning/late night chats were very quickly established and helped to make our holiday so very special so a very special mention goes to Elaine and Colin and Tracy and Alan, lemon verbena and Ouzo cocktails all round ;o)
The food at the Mediterranean was always freshly made, hot, tasty and in very generous portions (The diet starts today Karen ;o) ) The rooms are equipped with a kettle, cutlery, crockery, a full size fridge and a two ring cooker hob so if you fancy making something for your self it's all there for you.
All of the transfers went smoothly and the Thomson rep Kerry was lovely, making sure everyone was enjoying their stay. We had never traveled with Thomson before and were used to reps saying they would be at the hotel at a certain time and then not turning up or finding a quiet corner to hide in but Kerry was there on time and made sure people knew where to find her and dealt with any queries quickly and efficiently.
The island of Thassos is not commercialised but is beautiful and has it's own unique honey which is delicious. If you are looking for a holiday where you come away feeling refreshed and relaxed then a stay at the Mediterranean is for you, the hotel, the staff and the setting is second to none.

My mother in law and I spent the last two weeks of june here. The hotel is situated right on the beach and the views and the beautiful sunsets are simply amazing. The rooms are cleaned regularly and have little kitchenette things if you need to do any cooking. We found the staff to be very friendly and welcoming. We stayed full board with the intention of going out for some evening meals but the food was so good we ended up eating at the hotel for all but a couple of meals. As its only a small hotel there was always room to chill in the pool especially as the sea is on you doorstep too. There is very little night life in the area so this really was an ideal quiet relaxing holiday. You can take a bus from nearby to the capital thassos. Here are lots of little shops as well as bars and restaurants. After about 6 ish you have to get a taxi back as the buses stop early. We loved it and would defiantly go back in the future.

We (4 men travelling as a group) went to the Mediterranean Hotel / Apartments for 2 weeks (end of June, beginning of July).

We couldn't fault the place. It was clean, well maintained and well run. The food was lovely, well presented, and there was lots of it.

Yes, the decor in the rooms is a bit dated in places, but how much time do you spend in your room in such a lovely place. The main thing is that they were clean and well maintained.

The staff were all wonderful. Friendly, helpful and very hard working. I can't agree with the previous reviewer's experience and comments about Karen. She couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating when we were there. Sonny and Jordan behind the bar were also great guys who are eager to please.

The staff all get to know you personally, and nothing is too much trouble. The fellow guests as well were a great bunch of people. Everybody had the time of day for you and it was easy to mingle and socialise with such a lovely group of people.

The location (on the beach) is perfect, although the resort itself is very quite and quite isolated. But that's what we wanted, so for us it was perfect. We did hire a car for a couple of days to see the rest of the island, and I'd recommend anybody to do that. It's a cheap, safe and easy way of getting to see the things you want to see.

We've been holidaying together for about 10 years and are lucky enough to have never had a bad holiday. But this, I can say, was probably one of the better of all of our holidays.

Thank you to Karen, Jordan, Sonny, and all of the other "behind the scenes" staff, as well as our fellow guests for such a fantastic hoiliday. We'll definitely be back.

David, Mark, Andy and Gary

Room Tip: Top floor rooms have a fantastic view, but out on the balcony it gets UNBEARABLY hot in the afternoo...

Thassos is a beautiful place and the weather was amazing. The small Mediterranean hotel is clean and pretty and the location (right on the beach) is as good as it gets. The ferry trip there and back adds to the holiday with the extra entertainment of feeding the seagulls off the side!
We have few tips which would have made our holiday even better:
Skala Rahoni has quite a mosquito problem. It is the main topic of conversation by the pool and even the locals get savaged! Take good anti-mozzie stuff, seriously!
The hotel's location is not ideal if you are remotely active. It is on the main road for the island so walking to the nearest town is quite dicey! You can walk on the beach to the town (about an hours walk) but you have to wade through a sewage outlet). There is therefore nowhere to walk and hiring a car is essential unless you take the bus. If you take the bus, buy your tickets from Olga's (which is a really nice restaurant just by the hotel) before you get the bus. No-one told us that!
The hotel is ideally suited to the retired (and indeed it was mainly retired people when we were there). There is nothing for children and no nighttime entertainment. It is just not that type of place!
The staff at the hotel are really, really wonderful with the exception of Karen who we thought to be the manager but turned out to be the receptionist. Whether or not she simply just took a dislike to us we have no idea but she was both dismissive and uninterested in anything we had to ask. We thought it was "just us" but found it wasn't. Despite this, the rest of the staff were delightful with Jordan the barman being a total honey, a really genuinely nice guy (who loves cats!).
Cats: There are lots of poor skinny cats around but they don't cause any problems. Look out for Jordan's gorgeous Russian Grey, "Gandalph" who hangs around the bar at night.
Anyway, hire a car and take lots of books and if you're full board and haven't been to Greece before, try eating out a couple of times, we loved Vicki's on the beach and Olga's, where you get proper Greek food and no baked potatoes or mixed veg in sight!

Room Tip: Hire the Air con and if you need a safety deposit box there is a charge!

We spent a week here and would highly recommend. I agree with previous reviewer. Friendly helpful staff, in small hotel, right on the beach in a small village. There were choice of other restaurants to eat at, but we were full board so did not feel the need to try. Portions huge, good choice and all cooked well. Only recommendation would be to offer brown sauce at breakfast. Lunch time had choice off beach bar menu which was either salads or chips with either sandwiches, omelettes or a grill dish, again huge portions cooked well.
We hired a car through reception using Friendly cars which was perfectly adequate and had a very pleasant day touring around the island. Stopped off at Theologos which is a lovely village to explore, the Archagelos Monastry which is beautiful and arrived at Alki which was smaller than we expected for some lunch. Ate at Archodissa Restaurant Grill, on the main road looking down on to Alyki opposite pull in, great views and food.
Then carried onto the village of Panagia which was my favourite place set above Golden beach with its white washed houses and the stream leading up to the church.
We did one trip Magical Macedonia, which was a lovely vaired day with history, wine tasting and the Aliastrati caves to finish.
In all would recommend and happily go back.

We visited for the 2nd time from 10th to 17th June 2012 arriving on our Wedding Anniversary. Our first vist was 3 years ago - similar dates - and we were again greeted by Karen who remembered us from last time. All the staff were the same as 3 years ago - and all are friendly and helpful.

We had a room on the middle floor - Room 204 - which was huge. Small kitchen area, good sized bathroom, dining table, comfy chair, dressing table, twin beds and large wardrobe space. The balcony was also quite large with a table and two chairs and an airer for drying clothes/towels - and a fantastic view over the beach and pool area which was perfect for watching the sunset in the evenings.

Last time we visited the hotel was self catering - this time it was half board and I was worried that may not be a good thing - but the menu was distributed on arrival and there were four options each day which included two meat options, a fish option and a vegetarian option. Breakfast was buffet style but comprised fruit juices, cereal, toast and full english breakfast (fried eggs, boiled eggs, omlette, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and beans) and tea/coffee. We had lunch at the hotel most days at the beach bar which sells a good range of snacks and full meals which are very good value and delicious. We had our evening meal in the hotel on 5 nights - each time the food was plentiful and delicious. Starters were usually soup and/or salads / tzatziki / bread - and sweets were typical Greek sweets with fresh fruit also available.

The hotel and grounds are very clean. The rooms were cleaned 6 days a week and the bins emptied every day. Beds and towels were changed at least once, possibly twice - but it was sufficient.

The beach is clean and the sea shallow and warm. There is a charge for the sunbeds on the beach but this is offset against the cost of your first drinks from the bar - and it's a lovely, relaxing place to spend a lazy day just soaking up the rays.

We took a taxi to Skala Prinos and enjoyed an anniversary meal at the Larous Restaurant which was lovely. Food was excellent quality and very good value.

We hired a car for the day and travelled around the island to see the sights and we enjoyed a very nice lunch overlooking the sea at Aliki Beach.

We also took a taxi into Thassos Town for a meal one evening - taxi fare was 15 euros each way - but a 3 course meal at the Mythos Taverna overlooking the harbout was just 32 euros including wine and it was delicious.

Transfers to and from the hotel were very efficient and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel for a relaxing holiday in a lovely resort.

Thanks to Karen, Sonny & Jordan and all the staff for making our holiday perfect. We hope to see you again :)

Room Tip: We stayed in room 204 which is the end apartment affording fantastic views over the beach and pool.

I visited this hotel from 27 May to 10 June 2012 with my wife, for our honeymoon. We arrived after 14 hours travelling and were warmly greeted by the English receptionist, Karen, with a free drink and given all the info etc and room keys.I had emailed ahead and told the hotel that it was our honeymoon, and requested a top floor room. Sure enough, our room was on the top floor, and we were blown away by it. It was large by any standard, with plenty of cupboard space, a double bed, a single sofa bed, TV, air con, safe, hob, fridge, modern bathroom with loads of storage. We also a large, private balcony with a view over the pool and beach, and a side window that looked out to sea across to Kavala. We also found a note wishing us a happy honeymoon from the staff at the hotel, and a congratulatory bottle of wine.

We stayed at the hotel on a half board basis, and the food was fantastic. The breakfast consisted of a buffet of Greek yogurt, muesli, cornflakes, ham, cheese, toast, jam, sausages, eggs, bacon, omelettes, grilled tomatoes, sausages, beans and a big fruit basket as well a juice, tea and coffee. Plenty to set you up for the day. We went out for lunch a few times, but also had lunch at the pool bar, where the selection ranges from burger and chips to shrimp saganaki - ad it's all ace. As for the evening meal - Karen gives you a weekly menu, with three meat/fish dishes and a veggie option, and takes your order at breakfast each morning. I was a little skeptical about this, but it worked fantastically. The evening food was of a hugely high standard, and we enjoyed everything that we ate. The meals consist of a buffet salad and soup bar, followed by whatever you ordered in the morning. The food was amazing - we enjoyed everything we had, and there was plenty of variety on offer, from beef in beer to lamb kleftiko and mussel saganaki. On a Sunday, dinner is a 'barbecue' buffet, with souvlaki and pork chops and chicken breasts all piled up to help yourself.

My wife and I spent a good deal of our time sitting at the pool bar, enjoying the company of Sony and Jordan. All of the staff at the hotel are fantastic, but we got on especially well with these two.

The pool area is lovely, and the pool is always clean, and the area around also. The small area of beach outside the hotel is perfect for the number of guests, and we never went without a sunbed. The sea is clear and warm, and the views over to Kavala are fantastic.

Skala Rachoni is a very quiet resort, with a handful of tavernas and a hotels, but that is exactly what we wanted. Skala Prinos is a lovely 5km walk down the beach for a change of scenery, and Thassos town is a short bus ride away (1.60 per person each way). In Thassos town, we spent one day visiting the little stalls and shops, and another climbing up to the ancient ampitheatre for amazing views across the town, and also visited the archaeological museum.

We were also driven up into the mountains on a jeep, and visited the 'ghost village' of Kastro and the highest peak on the island, on a day which was well worth the money.

If we were to go back to Thassos (which we probably will, and we'll be staying at the same hotel again!) we would definitely hire a car. There is only one round going all the way round the edge of the island, and there are plenty of secluded beaches to discover.

All in all, we had a fantastic time. I've stayed in various hotels on various Greek islands, and I can honestly say the the Hotel Mediterranean was the best Greek hotel I've ever stayed at, and that's in no small way down to the hardworking, dedicated, friendly staff. We'll be back!
