“Nice Place, Shame about the Owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2012

Very spacious apartments. When we arrived rooms weren't ready. We were eventually put in room 12, the "patio" was overrun with large brown caterpillars. Patio has three concrete walls and concrete roof, no sun, couldn't sit out because of caterpillars. Complained to rep who told us complex full but we could change rooms for week 2. George the owner not very helpful, called us Number One Complainers. Bedroom door handle broken, you couldn't shut door or you'd be locked in (happened to previous guest), George promised to fix it same day - still not done when we swapped rooms. Promised to spray caterpillars in two days time but they didn't move them until our last day in room. For second week we were put in room 16 which overlooks the pool and has lovely view of marine and Turkey.

George and staff very odd if you ask them to ring a taxi, first time the girt said she had no taxi number and would have to rign the owner, another girl had to ring George to tell him we'd asked her to ring a taxi and they had a discussion about it but still didn't ring us a taxi so we eventually walked into town (only needed taxi due to twisted ankle). On one occasion George insisted on taking us to town for three euros but dropped us off halfway down so we might as well have paid the 6 euros for taxi and had a pleasant driver take us into the resort centre. Last day apartment door slammed shut in the wind with our key on the inside, reported it to reception, girl rang George and then came out to tell us George would arrange for someone to fix it but didn't know how long we'd have to wait and WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY, kicked off and George eventually rolled up and sorted it out himself. Nearly every time you spoke to him he would just disagree and argue - horrible man.

Apartments very spacious and comfortable, pool hardly ever used, pool bar never open, main bar sometimes open but if you ask for a spirit with mixer they disappear with the bottle of spirits and come back ten minutes later with your drink.

Pythagoria good base for holiday on Samos, boat trips good fun with Captains Gerasimo & Iannis who have lots of "ouzo time" when everyone drinks loads of ouzo and tries syrtaki dancing on board, restaurants all good, Psili Amos is nearest and best sandy beach.

Santa Catherina Apartments would be much improved by having a new owner or if George put a friendly manager in, he is definitely not a good host.

Room Tip: Avoid room 12

Just back from Samos staying at Santa Catherina Hotel, The rooms are superb cooker, oven, microwave, TV etc, We had a huge balcony overlooking the Marina, Super Pool, Fully euqiped Gym ( We found 1 hour before leaving, our fault we missed the welcome meeting).George who runs the hotel is helpful and a real nice guy. You do though need transport ( George will run you down to town and taxi is only 6 euros to return) Its about 2miles from the resort downhill going, a super walk.We hired a scooter and toured the lovely island. We can recommend the taverana in the Marina, Moma Anna`s which doesnt look real greek but the food is fantastic with good portions, you pick your meals the old fashioned way.....We will return.

Room Tip: Room 19 has sun in morning & early evening.

We had the most fantastic holiday . We stayed for 2 weeks and had an amazing time. The rooms were larger than expected and immaculate with eberything you need to self cater. Daniellea is an angel and cant do enough for you she is amazing ! There are plenty of sunbeds and the pool is much bigger than the picture suggests. Our children 13 and 11 enjoyed playing in the pool and the rooms are close enough for them to go back if too hot and watch a dvd. There is also internet connection in the large reception the children would get together with other children and watch films or play games.
You need transport if you want to visit this amazing island there are gorgeous beaches everywhere with tavernas where you can have lunch and dinner if you want to enjoy the sun set. That said if you are happy around the pool (it was empty most days )you can get a taxi into town The views from the hotel are amazing - best i have ever seen . My only quibble was that you need to be prepared for self catering as there isnt anywhere close to buy food - we ate out every night and filled the fridge with wine and treats so that we had our own all inclusive holiday !!
Big thank you to George and daniella and the lovely lady who helped for a super holiday x
Dont forget to visit the outdoor cinema amazing and they serve food and drinks

We booked our package holiday through Thomsons and on arrival at Samos Airport, were met by the Reps who gave us directions to Santa Catherina Studios. We had already booked a hire car in the UK so didn’t need the coach transfer. After collecting our car, we headed for the apartments, which only took about 15 minutes. We were so glad we had a car as the road was extremely windy and long and up a very steep, hair-pin bendy hill and the temperature was over 40 degrees early afternoon. Also, we arrived in the middle of a taxi strike and it was almost impossible to hire a car on the island and to reach the apartments without transport.

The apartments weren’t signposted and we would have missed them but for the photographs from the website I had printed off. We went into reception, which I must admit was fabulous - plush seating, tiled floors, huge TV - very luxurious. Unfortunately, there was no one there to greet us. We waited and waited and waited, with other people who had just arrived on the island as well and all we wanted to do was get changed, have something to eat/drink and get outside. Whilst waiting, some of the guests said there was a sign in reception saying air conditioning would be charged at €5 per day, which I hadn’t seen on the website, but by now, I was beginning to think we had made a big mistake booking these apartments.

The lady running the apartments by herself on a day-to-day basis, Daniella, was showing other guests to their apartments and when she returned to a reception full of very tired, hot and annoyed guests, did her best to placate us. You could see she was doing her very best to please everyone, but she couldn’t do everything by herself and it wasn’t her fault that she didn’t have any help. After another 15 minutes, it was our turn.

Our ground floor apartment (No 25) was in a block of about 5 apartments on the border of a building site down a flight of steps to the right of the main building. The view from our room was a concrete slab, being the ceiling of an unfinished property block below, with the view of the marina and the sea in the distance. It was steaming hot and our ground floor apartment was boiling hot and breathless. The heat radiating from the white concrete was intense and we opened all the windows and doors to get some ventilation. We tried to switch on the air conditioning unit, which we couldn’t. Our apartment was very large, which was really good, but had no character whatsoever - just a square, soulless box with basic furnishings/fittings - kitchen area, sofa, table and chairs, beds, mirror and drawers. The website said it had been refurbished - goodness knows what it was like before, but whoever did the internal work obviously wasn’t a professional decorator/plumber/electrician. Some of the fittings were disastrous - ceramic tiles chipped away to make holes for pipes, dodgy electric wires everywhere which made the lights flicker when touched. Power sockets in the most bizarre places, or not at all (the kitchen had one situated over the hot plates so you had to stand the kettle on the hot plate and make sure no water got into the electric cooker - not ideal). Another thing that really hacked me off was that apart from a drying up towel, there was no washing up liquid, no washing up brush or scourer, no nothing. This is a self-catering apartment with pots, pans, plates, cups, glasses etc. so when you did use anything, you had nothing to clean them with. We didn’t think that we would have to supply cleaning products ourselves as it’s common sense that they would be included. Also, we had a weight restriction imposed on us by Thomsons and would have been charged if we’d gone over our weight limit.

The air conditioning unit was in the bedroom and we were looking forward to using it that evening as it was unbearably hot in the apartment, even with the windows/doors open.

We weren’t at all happy and at the Thomsons meeting the next day, told the reps about our apartment and that we wanted to move rooms. We had also heard that air conditioning would cost an extra €5 per day. Fortunately, I had printed off the details from the website and yes it said air conditioning was available in July/August, but it did not say it would cost extra. After confronting the reps with this proof, they told us we didn’t have to pay anything extra for the air conditioning. Daniella told us the hotel was full, but she had just had a cancellation for Room 12 (on the other side of the main building) and we could move in once it had been cleaned. We went and had a look at it and although it was still on the ground floor, had a better outlook and secluded ground floor patio. We packed our things and moved later that day.

Once we’d sorted out our room and the air conditioning issue, we had a great holiday. Daniella was efficient and such a very nice lady, but was severely overworked. Apart from another lady who cleaned the rooms, common areas, there was no one there to help Daniella, which was very unfair as she worked extremely hard and only wanted to please the guests. The rooms were cleaned every day and because of the taxi strike, George the owner, took anyone who wanted to go down to the harbour (Pythagorio) where all the restaurants, cafes and bars were, every evening at 7.00pm and bought them back again at 11.00pm.

The view from the apartments looking over the marina and coast of Turkey was fantastic and the breeze was really welcome as the weather all week was up in the 40’s. The swimming pool was amazing and as we had the car, we toured the island to various places pointed out by the Thomson reps.

Samos is a beautiful, interesting island and I would certainly return - not in July/August as it’s too hot for me. Santa Catherina Studios could be an ideal place to stay, but there are issues which need sorting out to ensure everyone enjoys their holiday.

Room Tip: Book a top floor room to get a better view and breeze - ground floor rooms are very hot!

Have you ever heard of the term 'Fur coat, no knickers'? This aptly describes the Santa Catherina, a hotel which is nearly very good but which lets itself down in a number of significant ways.Positives. The rooms are huge for Greece, cleaning was regular and to a high standard, the views across the Marina and the Aegean are utterly spectacular, the pool is a decent size and the two staff Daniella and the middle aged Greek lady are friendly and helpful and seemed to work 24 hours a day.
Downsides. There was no hot water of a morning.......plenty at night but nothing for a morning shower. Half the grounds are unfinished and a bit like walking through a building site in parts. Service at the pool bar and bar was patchy in fact the pool bar was manned by a couple of ten year olds on several days! Broken light in the bathroom, installed hairdryer that didn't work, no electrical points in the kitchenette meaning that you had to boil the kettle on the floor! The owner also switched the lights off in the expensively decorated reception area in the evening to save on the electric bill and the place just looked abandoned at times. Insufficient exterior lighting also meant that crossing the rubble strewn car park was a bit hazardous in the dark.
Don't get me wrong, I love Samos and these issues wouldn't necessarily stop me returning to the Santa Catherina in the future however you just get the feeling that it could be so much better if they just made a bit more effort with the things that really matter, and hadn't spent the whole budget on the beautiful tiles in the reception that nobody used.

Arrived back last week after spending 2 weeks at these loveley apartments. The views are spectacular and the apartment was cleaned every day. It was very spacious for myself, partner and son and even had a bath. The swimming pool is massive and lots of sunbeds around it but wasn't that busy most of the time.
As other reviews have said if you use the easier route to the harbour it only takes about 20 minutes walk down to Pythagorion and cost us 6 euros to go back in a taxi.
George the owner also ferried us to and from the harbour during the taxi strike and was extremeley friendly and helpful. The 2 girls who also work there cannot do enough for you and were always working really hard.
We would definitely recommend a holiday here and will return ourselves.

We stayed at the Santa Catherina Studios in July and after having stayed on many different Greek islands were pleasantly surprised by the size and cleanliness of the rooms.
The swimming pool area was beautiful and well maintained and the views from rooms on the top floor are spectacular. (Be aware that not all rooms have the views as made out by the brochures due to new buildings being built below.)
The walk into town is about half hour down the hill - not bad going down but difficult going up in the heat of the day and at night - take a torch!!
The island is lovely - lots of little resorts to visit but all stony beaches bar one at Psilli Ammos which was lovely.
Had good meals at every restaurant we visited in town by the harbour and several lovely meals at Mama Anna's at the local marina which is a shorter but steeper walk.
The one big thing that let this hotel down is the lack of a bar either by the pool or in the complex. Again the brochures state there's a restaurant and bar in reception but while there is a bar built it wasn't open for the duration of our two week stay and there is no restaurant! The girls - when you can find them will make you something if they have time but as there are only two of them running the whole place you will be hard pushed to find them. One essential tip - buy something to eat and drink at the airport when you arrive to take to the apartment as there is nowhere close to get any shopping - nearest place in town - 25 min walk away.
If you want a relaxing, peaceful holiday in the middle of nowhere this is for you, but for us it was to quiet, to remote and although the views were spectacular the facilities (or lack of) let it down.
