Much like the most recent review of Villa Manos that I just read here (hello Mathew Snyder), I am also floored by any negative reviews of Villa Manos. I think the first thing to consider is that for the same price (20 Euros per person per night in a double room in mid-Sept) in Fira you would be staying in a hostel dorm. If you are willing to stay outside of Fira, you can stay in a lovely hotel with free arrival and departure transfers!
We stayed here for six nights. The hotel itself is charming, employing the whitewash and heliotropic bushes that work to such positive effect all over Santorini. Every room has a balcony, and we also had a fridge, sink, plates and utensils which came in very handy for saving money. The room is painted in a warm salmony color and the bed was comfortable.
It's true--you only get one towel and there are no free toiletries. But I thought back again to the fact that this was like a really, really fantastic hostel. You are paying hostel prices and get a comfy, charming room, a pool, and a lovely outdoor patio. The minor sacrifice of bringing my own towel and using my own shampoo was not a big deal.
The breakfast is 5 Euros and includes coffee or tea, orange juice, a basket of bread, butter, jam, a fried egg and a slice of cheese. It wasn't the most amazing breakfast ever but it was sufficient and, above all, conveniently quick and filling the two times we had it.
Let me address the walk from Katerados into Fira. There is a sidewalk for about 70% of it. The first little stretch from Villa Manos to the main square of Katerados (where there's a supermarket and big bus stop) is the most harrowing, but after we did it a few times we realized it's not so bad. I would recommend walking the whole way on the side of the street opposite the hotel, whether it's against or with traffic. You can see traffic and also get out of its way much easier on that side.
We did rent a scooter on the third day, after we'd settled in on Day 1 and done the obligatory caldera islands boat tour (good fun--loved the hot springs and Oia sunset) on Day 2. We were cheap and rented from a place on the way into Fira instead of doing it with Villa Manos for a Euro more per day. I would recommend just doing it with them--they will bring the scooter or whatever you get to you at the hotel. Silly us.
It's true what everyone has said about Poppy and her family--they are so friendly and helpful. The free transfers are a lifesaver--it would have been such a pain to get anywhere from the port without it. Since flights and ferries are going all the time, it is extremely generous of them to be constantly dropping off and picking up people. Our ferry was over an hour late but Poppy's husband was waiting for us with a big smile. When we got to the hotel he poured us some wine, and he and Poppy gave us the basic run-down. They first put us in a room that had two twin beds shoved together, and we asked to be moved to a room with a double bed. She explained that people usually want a balcony, so she had given us the room with two twins and a balcony because the only double left was on the ground floor. She was very nice about changing the rooms even though the "lobby" had technically been closed for over an hour.
At night, after dinner and sunsets and all that, we would sit outside our room (we had a table and chairs, it just wasn't elevated) and have wine. The family would pass by and were unfailingly pleasant, inquiring about our adventures in Santorini, making sure we had everything we needed. The whole family is just lovely--really kind and warm. I am in customer service and *know* they must encounter a fair share of demanding, rude, unpleasant people, but through it all they maintain their good-hearted and generous ways.
Considering that hotels with caldera views run anywhere from 250 - 400 Euros a night, I think it's well worth it to stay at this charming place for a fraction of the cost. You can rent transport and still save a bundle. The hotel, pool, patio, rooms, and owners are all lovely.
