“Great place for quiet family vacation!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2011

Exellent place for people looking for the place far away from the crowd and noise. Great atmospere created by the Greek family. Outstanding food prepared by Maria - owners daughter. Rooms simple but clean. Airconditioning working properly. Pool with saltwater is big enough and clean with direct view to the sea. Do not go there if you need animations, aquaaerobic and all this staff provided in All Inclusive hotels. We love this place. Our children do not want to go anywhere else for next vacation.

We were pleased with our apartment - 2 bedrooms, two bathrooms - perfect for four of us. Large saltwater pool - not pleasant if you get it in your eyes etc but probably less chance of ear infections. Air conditioning works great - protective screens on windows to keep out the nasties. Bins emptied and towels/bedding changed regularly but no cleaning done. Beds hard and pillows more like cushions - bring your own perhaps. Very close to pleasant beach with great taverna. Great beaches on the Akrotiri peninsula - really liked Marathi. The Owl Cafe near the Venizelos graves on the way into Chania is a must for the fantastic view, coffee and chocolate cake.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

Our original plan was to stay in this hotel as a convenient base for Chania airport: we'd arrive late in the night, sleep there, leave in the morning to explore Crete. Same thing with the way back: as we had an early flight out of Crete, we'd arrive the previous night in the Akrotiri peninsula, sleep at the Zorbas hotel, then go to the airport.

As chance would have it, our bags were lost on the way in. We finally got to the hotel very late at night, angry, depressed and hungry. The staff made it all good. We were invited poolside for a shot of rakia, Maria was called to made us something to eat (wonderful souvlakis), and we went off to sleep reasonably tipsy and thoroughly satisfied. When we woke up the next morning the place was so beautiful that we just decided to stay one more day and see if the bags would arrive from the airport. We spent the most relaxing day in a long, long time, with a wonderful Cretan dinner by Maria again (plus rakia). In the end our bags arrived a couple of days later, but we were so satisfied with Zorbas' hotel that we simply gave up on our exploration ideas and stayed at the hotel for the whole of our holiday. We never regretted it. The sea is fantastic (I'm a passionate snorkeler), there's an underwater cliff going down to around 22m deep just 2 meters from the coastline. It's so deep that from the surface you can't really see the bottom, which makes for the "Big Blue" effect. Fascinating. I tried to pinpoint the exact spot here:

We had a "suite" (a bungalow with two rooms, a kitchenette and a bathroom - there was also a fireplace!) and excellent meals for a really modest price. I prefer the sea to pools, so I didn't use the pool much, but I did go in a couple of times, it's nice that they use seawater rather than heavily chlorinated freshwater.

Bear in mind the place is quite isolated, so you will need a car - but then you can head off to Chania for anything you might need. We don't have kids but Maria does, and we noticed they easily made friends with the children of other guests, happily ignoring all linguistic barriers.

We were there end of june, so we avoided the august masses. This of course helps. A place I would recommend any day, and to anyone (save perhaps the swinging single... but for couples and families, that's perfect).

We stayed in a pair of adjoining 1-bed apartments with our daughter's family. The beach-side location was stunning (as were the sunsets over the poolside cafe). The owner welcomed us with warm enthusiasm, and his family (daughter Marie, her husband and children) made us feel very much at home. She is such a good cook!!!

A tiny beach less than two minutes walk away provided many happy hours for us (and the grand-daughter), and the Tavern on the beach provided the most excellent coffee (ask for 'Nescafe' and make sure that nobody except Nico makes it). Took a trip by bus to Chania (2.10 Euros each way). Bus stop is 15 mins walk away, near to the two Supermarkets). Drove to the Monaseries in the mountains - good trip.

Only real downside (apart from the basic nature of the accommodation) was the mossies. I was eaten alive!! Must make sure that you take precautions - use the mossie-net over the beds, and the plug-in oojits (get refills from Mrs Anna). Citronella candles on the balcony would be useful, as would Boots Soltan sun lotion with insect repellent.

Apart from that, I am looking forward to another visit to Stavros.

These guests knew that the swimming pool operated from the end of April and this was due to weather conditions. We refer this information to all adverts on internet pages. They never asked how the air condition remote control works, if they had problem with that, and of course the room was not dirty!
