“Great stay at Maistrali Apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Fantastic stay at Maistrali Apartments! We were more than pleasantly surprised when we got there to see a large apartment, two big, spatious rooms, a large bathroom, two terraces, a smaller one and a large, beautiful one. We were lucky to stay in one of the rooms facing the sea, so drinking our coffee in the morning on the terrace looking at the sea and at Stalida streching before our eyes was fantastic and so relaxing!

The bathroom has a bathtub and clean towels which were changed twice during our one week stay. The larger of the two rooms has a table with 4 chairs, two beds, a closet - spatious enough; the fridge; a stove; cupboards with everything you needed for cooking, though we never cooked, only prepared coffee there; shelves and a TV in the corner; and plenty of space to move around. I'm in the habit of hitting my hands and feet and toes against anything, well surprisingly here I had so much room to move around that I managed not to hit any body parts against any of the objects in the room!

The large terrace has a table with 4 chairs and two extra chairs for visitors. However, if the space is not enough for a larger group split in 2-3 rooms to get together, Maistrali Apts have a terrace outside where all guests can get together and have some drinks and talk and have fun.

Because it's not right in the centre of Stalida it's very quiet, you can sleep with your windows open and only hear the sound of the sea (so relaxing!). We walked to the center (the street Maistrali Apts are on is the same street which leads to the centre) and it took us about 6-7 minutes to get there, so the location is great. And it took us about 5 minutes to the nearest beach.

There is WiFi there, but I couldn't make it work. It worked in almost all the bars and restaurants we've been to though, so this was not a huge deal.

Friendly personnel, they only start work around 11 AM, but work until late in the night and are ready to help with anything when needed. They were really helpful and nice with us!

All in all, a great stay, I would love to stay there again, especially in the room facing the sea. I definitely recommend Maistrali Apartments.

Clean, friendly, large apartment (it seems though there are smaller rooms and smaller bathrooms), basic furniture, but really comfortable. I have had one of the apartments with a sea view, large terrace on the sea, nice bedroom with a balcony, large living-room, a very nice place to spend holidays. The living-room-kitchen has a fridge, everything necessary to cook (quite useless, since there are restaurants everywhere), there is a table in the living room and one on the terrace, very agreeable to have breakfast or to drink with friends a bottle of Cretan wine watching the sea. The “staff” is a young man very helpful and polite. The beach with fine sand is near. The place is quiet, some nights it is possible to hear from a distance the faded music of the bars in Malia. A tip: don’t forget your anti-mosquitoes, there are mosquitoes. Since it is not an expensive hotel, the quality of our staying there was a very nice surprise. A good idea: it is possible to rent a car for not much money and there are plenty of beautiful things to see: Knossos, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, the beautiful palm beach of Vai, Matala on the South, a bit farer at West Rethymnos, etc. There is a free parking near the hotel.

Just came back from Crete and want to share our experience. We had a very pleasant stay at Maistrali Apartments. The staff was very nice and helpful to us with lots of information regarding Crete. The hotel is clean, rooms are spacious and well equipped. Good position in Stalida, in a rather quiet part of the otherwise busy resort, with a nice view of the sea (beach further away). Also, I warmly suggest the food at Maistrali: the menu is simple, prices are quite fair and the quality is above expectations. Best Greek salad we've had in Stalida. Also, the bar at night is quite rewarding after a day of trips. So it's a good way to avoid the tourist traps in the center of the resort. Overall, I'd say Maistrali in Stalida is a good, value for money option for people who really know what they want in Crete. Tip: it's easy and not expensive to rent a car these days.
Big thanks to the staff!

About the hotel:

We stayed in this hotel in september 2012, it is a small hotel right across the sea. There is literally only a street between the hotel entrance and the rocky seashore. The sandy beaches start a little further down the same street, maybe a 5 minute walk.

Room was great, clean and perfect for a nice relaxing vacation. We got the 3rd floor apartment (although we only paid for a simple double room), it had a bedroom with a double bed and a balcony, a small bathroom, and a large living room / kitchen which had another balcony with a table and 2 chairs. The living room also had 2 couches, the kitchen had a 4-person table. Both balconies had a nice sea view. From what the neighbours said, other rooms were much smaller.

We had a fridge, TV, cooking appliance, pots and dishes. A nice restaurant is next to the hotel; if you get meals with your reservation, you'll probably eat there. Others are just a few minutes away. Next to the restaurant is also a supermarket.
Room was clean and nicely equipped, even though a little outdated. No other facilities though: no pool, no entertainment. But I didn't feel the need for that - you can always go somewhere else for that.

The manager / front desk guy / barman (one man does it all) was young and helpful. Except for one night (when he decided to throw some kind of a party and the music went on till past midnight), everything was nice and quiet. Oh, and there was the garbage truck every other morning (8am), but not extremely noisy.

Not much to complain about: the free wifi didn't work at all, and the bar drinks were a rip-off. A cocktail costs 6 or 6.5 € and you could find those much cheaper (maybe half the price) if you walked down the street for a couple of minutes. And those are real bars, not the wannabe bar from the hotel.

Also, my GF's pyjamas went missing 2 days before we left. I find it very hard to believe that this was on purpose, but rather a simple mistake when changing the bedsheets (the maid taking the pyjamas along with the sheets to the dry cleaning). A bit annoying, but it was probably a mistake, so we didn't say anything.

Would we go back? Yes, it was a nice vacation.

About the location:
Stalis is a nice family destination, the nightlife is better in Malia (2km away) if you prefer that.
If you're like me and prefer walking and tanning on the beach, you'll find many good restaurants in Stalis, lots of bars, and other things to do.
You can rent cars and quads for very low prices (even 15 €/ day), and you can also take the bus. We visited Heraklion and the bus was 6€ if I remember correctly (12€ roundtrip).
