“Basic Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

I visited this hotel with my wife on the basis of the reviews on here i was a little disapointed.
Goods points. The staff who work here are amazing 110% very polite and seem very commited to the customers.Manos who works behind the bar excellent thankyou. The pools are great and clean.
We were put into one of the rooms at the back of the hotel walking up the slopes 8/9 times a day was tiring. I did ask the man on reception if we could be moved 2 times he never came back to me! A lot of the people at the hotel are very friendly with the manager / owner of the hotel they seem to get better treatment and more of his time. I found the hotel overall quite average i am aware it is a 3* but i have stopped in better hotels in Spain and Turkey.
If you are better suited to spent all day sitting by the pool drinking beer and cocktails this is the place for you because there is not much to door locally without hiring a car or walking 15/20 minutes to the nearest shops / beach. Becareful if you do the standard of driving is terrible!!!!!!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.

I would also like to present a different point of view so that readers see both sides of a story :

Firstly, if our "110% amazing polite and commited to guests staff" at the reception, has been asked twice for a room change from you and that has not been adressed for any reason, i guess the reservation manager Diane or me, we are around 24/7, so we could easily have been asked too, to see if there were something we could do.....

Secondly i am at the Hotel 24/7 and i work in Hotels for 16 years having fun and chats with all guests and no-one gets a better or worst treatment depending on how often he/she talks to me !!!? And I can not talk to people that i can not see, if they are not around ! ( i do not go out with guests or in to guests rooms :) ) Actually i am asking myself, what reviewer means with a better treatment ? (be carefful what you say, as my wife reads the reviews too, ha ha ha ! - only joking :) )

Finally reviewer wrote there is not much to do locally and need to hire a car etc....Well here is just a very short list, more you can find in Stalis Forums here in Tripadvisor or in our website :
No need to hire a car as Buses offer a very good service every half an hour to all directions, 2 waterparks available 30 minutes from hotel, all beach/water sports 8 minutes from hotel where also the nearest beach is ( ask and we will show you), Museums 35 minutes away with the bus, Bar, pubs and night life 10-15 minutes walk in stalis or 20 minutes to lively all night Malia.
Tour operators and we also organise excursions to see wild Crete, Greek nights, Magic Shows, Spinaloga island, rest of the amazing island of Crete... etc......Well i can go on and on .......

Also please be so kind to e-mail me here or in our web site the better from ours, 3 star Hotels in Spain, for the same price please, as i would love to holiday there.

Conclusions are yours.

Best Regards

Stayed for 1 week - room was basic, but big and clean, apart from top headboard - dust overlooked by the cleaners !

Bed very comfy and shower although very small, water pressure was good !

No kettle in room, and if you want one from the hotel will cost you 1 euro a day lol - my advice is take one with you !

Also you have to pay to use the safe in room 15 euros a week!!! Got to say the safe should be free, like other hotels in the world i have visited !

Half board is good - lots of food to choose - hit and miss sort off - some you like and its your taste, some not ! Only complain it's some dishes are very oily, so had to give it a miss !

Pool is lovely and very clean and the place is well looked after - staff are very nice too

Location was ok - cross the road and you get to the beach and shops.

Overall good hotel to stay in Crete !

Dear Guest,

Firstly Thank you for your nice comments abour our Hotel.

Now for the right impression of all readers too, just to let you know following :

The stay in our Hotel in October including room and both meals are for 13 euro or 10 GBP per person per night ! If you take out you transfers and flights you could easily see that.

In other Hotels (mostly city ones or self caterings) where the kettle or the safe is for free i am sure you have not paid 10 GBP per person per night to stay there including 2 meals, no? So actually the safe and the kettle were not for free there in these hotels, but already paid included in the accommodations price, no ? And maybe at the end you paid much much more in these hotels around the world for the hidden safe and kettle costs than in ours, i am sure about it as i travel a lot too.
So i think is better to have these costs separetely and not hidden and let guests choose if they would like to hire a kettle or a safe. And the kettle's cost of 1 euro per day is for the electricity use and not for the kettle itself. What about the free air-con also ?
In my opinion the Value for money of our Hotel, seeing the quantity and quality of meals we offer, the friendliness of staff and the cleanliness, is very very good for European 3 star Hotel standards.

Thank you once more for the nice comments for our hotel and we look forward to welcoming back again in the near future.

Best Regards

We visited this hotel for a week at the beginning of October, having found a good deal on the Thomas Cook website, when we checked the reviews and we had to book it.
We were a party of 8 aged from 2 to 60+.
I emailed the hotel to explain that although we were on two bookings we were the same party and if possible could we be in the same block, one family room, one double and two singles.

Check in/Reception
We were met on arrival by Diane who checked us in and explained about the hotel and much to our delight we had all been accommodated along one floor. The gentleman who took us to our room was also lovely and when we went to give him a tip we found he had gone.
All of the reception staff were pleasant and helpful and the kids loved taking the keys to them.

Rooms
Couldn't fault the rooms. Our family room had it's own front door but it also had another external door that was shared with the room next door which meant we could close the external door leave the bedroom door open and the kids could walk between the rooms but could not go outside.
Our room was so spacious.
There was a separate sleeping area for the girls with two single beds. In the main room there was a double bed, table and chairs, television, fridge(that was always on) dressing table with mirror and hairdryer and plenty of storage space, Safe and air con.
There was a bathroom with a shower and outside a big balcony with table and 4 chairs.
Our room was at the front of the hotel looking over the road, there was some noise but it didn't bother us.

Food
In the restaurant there was a table set up for the 8 of us which we were really pleased with.
Everyone in our party enjoyed the food and always found something to take their fancy. The staff worked hard to ensure that the food trays were topped up.
One of our party is a vegetarian and always had plenty to choose from.
Breakfast offered hot and cold options.
Lunch could be ordered from the pool bar, we did this on one occasion burgers, chips etc, couldn't fault the food or price
Evening meal offered a selection of salad dishes and a good choice of hot options, deserts were lovely.

Staff
Without exception the staff in this hotel are excellent. They are all extremely hard working, polite and helpful and very pleasant but we have to give a particular mention to the afternoon gentleman in reception whose name I have forgotten(sorry) our youngest loved him, Vana the waitress and Laura from the kids club.

Hotel by day
There are three swimming pools, the main pool, a kids pool and then down some steps another pool that has a shallow end sectioned off. There were always plenty of available sunbeds and outside toilets which were kept clean.
For the kids there was a lovely little play area and a kids club. Now we don't usually use kids clubs but our girls 2&4 went one afternoon and really enjoyed, I think it was only them and 2 other girls there but Laura still put in a great deal of effort.

Hotel by night
There was some form of entertainment on every night be it performers or a quiz, which followed a kiddies disco. This disco was put on even though on one day it was only our girls there but they loved dancing with Laura and looked forwards to going.
Evening entertainment is again something we don't usually do but some members of the party were there every night (except Sunday for the film) and it has to be said we enjoyed it.

Location
It is a 5-10 min walk to the beach and there are plenty of shops and restaurants around. There are bus stops across the road and a short walk in either direction, Buses were a good price and on time.

It is difficult to capture in words what makes this such a good hotel but I think it is that personal touch.
You are made to feel as if every individual customer is important.

I would certainly recommend this hotel....our 4 year old wants to move there!!

Stayed here again between the 2nd & 16th October. This is the only hotel we have ever returned to and we made the right decision in doing so because again we had a really fantastic time!
We travelled as a family of 2 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 13yrs.
The staff remembered us from our previous trip there and all gave us a very warm welcome back. There was even a bottle of wine and a "welcome back" card waiting in our room for us......lovely touch!! (if the management read this and we return next year can I request it's rose instead of red please.....ha ha ha!!).
The rooms again were kept spotlessly clean by the ever cheerful and very hard working squad of maids. The sheets and towels were frequently changed. The free air con and fridge are a great bonus.
The pool area, restaurant, bar and gardens are also kept very clean. The pools are never overcrowded and there are always plenty of sunbeds available.
The food is brilliant. There is so much choice at both breakfast and evening meals and the food is always hot and fresh. The salads are so varied and delicious......my favs were the potato salad and tatziki....yum!! The soup was delicious!!
There was a good selection of entertainment in the evenings and the even 2nd time around the 3 Mystic Men were just as entertaining......."magic, illusion.....aberacadabera!!"......they are not meant to be funny but we couldn't stop laughing at all the hair-swishing that was going on!!
Hotel Anastasia is in an ideal situation.......its a very peaceful place to stay and only a few minutes walk to bus stops serving other resorts. The buses are frequent (every 30 mins) and easy to use. Its only a 5-10 min walk to the beach and shops, pubs, restaurants and there are short-cuts through Hotel Kyknos which gets you there quicker if you dont like walking in the heat.
The weather was superb.......apparently it was hotter than average for October and it ranged from about 27-37 degrees. There was 1 thunderstorm when we were there and we really enjoyed using the swimming pool in the warm rain!!
The thing that really makes this hotel SO SPECIAL is the staff. They are all so very friendly, welcoming, hard working and cheerful. Special praise should go to Vana, Maria and the male waiter (sorry his name has slipped my mind!) in the restaurant.....they are a real credit to the hotel....such lovely people!
Michael the owner is a legend!! He is constantly checking with all of the guests that they are enjoying their stay......it really does matter to him that you have a good holiday. He works from early morning till very late at night making sure the hotel runs well......and you have to witness his karaoke performances.......they are priceless!!! Sooooo amusing!! I think he is Elvis reincarnated!!
My twin sister and her family decided to surprise us by turning up to join us for the 2nd week of our holiday and a very special thank you must go to Dianne on reception who helped arrange that our rooms were next door to one another and managed to keep the secret which must have been difficult because the manager Michael was itching to let us know! Even the waitresses knew my twin was turning up to surprise us but they never let on. It was such an amazing surprise and the memories of that night will stay with us forever! Thanks to all the staff!!
Anyway.....if you are thinking about booking this hotel I would say go for it. You wont be disappointed. It really is a very special place. We are already planning on booking up to stay again next year......it's like a home-from-home and we just love the place!!
Many thanks Michael and all the very special staff at Anastasia for a very special stay!!
Hope to see you next year,
Jane, Gordon, Becky & Bob Reid xxxxx

We had a weeks holiday and wanted somewhere to go. it wasn't a very long time to make the decision to return to Hotel Anastasia again. After our experience there 2 years ago we would have returned sooner but due to health issues we had to wait until now to return.
Even before arriving we were contacted by the hotel checking if our special needs for my wifes disabilities would be catered for. Having been previously we know the hotel is built on a hill side and some of the paths towards the rear of the property can be quite steep and unsuitable for wheelchairs and anyone with walking difficulties.
On arrival we were met by Diane, who simply said "Welcome back", that was just the start of our wonderful week, even though its been 2 years everyone remembered us. That's what makes the hotel so special, its big enough to provide all the services people need for a great holiday but small enough to be personal and memorable.
From Mixalis (Mike) the General Manager and Owner, and right through all the staff everyone gives you service you'd expect from more than a 3 star hotel. Why Anastasia is only a 3 star rating we dont really know.
Breakfast and Evening Meals are Buffet service, with seating available both inside and out depending on your preference. No-one rushes you through your meal, you can eat at your leisure and no pressure to vacate your table no matter how busy the restaurant is. Every night Mixalis makes a point of talking to every guest making sure all is well. He knows every single guest in his hotel. A lot of managers could take some some lessons from Mixalis and his style of running a great hotel.
The rooms are cleaned every day by a dedicated team, who take real pride in their work. Towels and bedding are changed regularly. Each room has a free fridge and air conditioning. There is a small charge for using the safety deposit box in the room and you can hire a kettle if you want for 1 Euro per day.
Beach towels can be hired for 2 Euros per towel and then another 2 Euros if you want to change them during your stay. They are really good quality towels and save a lot of weight in your luggage.
The hotel is located on the edge of Stalis, so walking into the centre for the beach or shopping is via an underpass under the busy main road and then only about a 10-15 minute stroll. There's no need to rush, you're on holiday after all, time to relax.
Even though the hotel is located quite close to the aforementioned busy road the traffic noise isn't obtrusive at all.
Overall we loved our time as part of the Anastasia family and we're hoping to return again next year but for a 2 week stay instead of just the one this year.
Special thanks to everyone at Anastasia for making our holiday great.

We stayed at Anastasia for 10 days this October. Booked it because of the excellent reviews here on Tripadvisor and price. Were not disappointed at all. First of all we were really impressed with the personal approach from the hotel manager/owner. We arrived quite late and received a very warm personal welcome from him. Later on we were also looked after very well and were asked several times if everything was OK (which was, well maybe mattresses a bit hard, but we got used to them). Michael, the owner/manager tries his best to make sure his guests are satisfied with their stay and generally is always around and up for a chat. His team is extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel rooms and all areas are very well maintained.

We loved the cleanliness, friendliness and safeness of this place as well as facilities. The evening entertnainment was so-so to our taste, more like for people 45+ and we haven't reached that age yet :) We travelled with our 3 y.o. daughter and she liked the kids club and made some friends in the friendly and homely atmosphere of the hotel.

Personally I was very impressed with the food. A large selection of salads, vegetable and meat dishes for dinner. I feel much healthier now after eating my favourite cabage salad for dinner every night :) (and other dishes too)

I also loved the view on the mountains (see photos), especially in the morning swimming before breakfast.

It was our first visit to Crete and we didn't really know what to expect. We rented a car and explored the island a bit. Our favourite beach wasn't the one near Anastasia and we drove often to Hersonissos beaches (our favourite was near hotel Creta Maris). This isn't quite relevant for Anastasia review, but sometimes myself I find useful tips reading Tripadvisor reviews. So here it is.

The weather in first half of October was just perfect. Still very hot (25+), but not extremely. The sea was nicely warm.

great place to go and chill out in a nice friendly hotel .the staff are very friendly which seems to pass on to the guests and most will chat at mealtime or at the bar .the only thing i can say wrong is that there is a busy road outside but there is a underpass to get you to the other side .the food was very good and plenty of it
