We spent an idyllic two weeks here earlier this month and believe it is one of the most superb locations we have ever visited. The solitude and tranquility suited our needs perfectly and the room was very clean and beautifully decorated. We stayed in Room 3 which meant we could look out over the beautiful sea view from our balcony, enjoying the raki, wine and fresh produce presented by Mr Pandelis, our warm and friendly host, and which were replenished frequently during our wonderful stay. The homegrown tomatoes deserve a special mention as these were simply a taste sensation and not to be found anywhere else in the world!
We spent many happy hours on the private beach, a few metres from our room, on comfortable sun-loungers and very necessary parasols as every day of our stay was hot and sunny. Being so close to the azure sea was amazing and we were undisturbed most days. The warm breeze added to the wonderful experience. The shingle beach meant it was necessary to wear shoes to walk to the water's edge for a swim but the sea was utterly amazing and very refreshing! Clear water, ideal for snorkelling and a current which was never strong enough to worry about.
In the evening, we walked into Paleochora for dinner and enjoyed the souvenir shopping before enjoying wonderfully presented and delicious food. We too were often accompanied by the 'resident hound' who disappeared once we reached the centre! He was always there to welcome us on our return to the apartment.
For those lovers of night sky watching.....this location is simply superb.....no light pollution and a breathtaking array of all the constellations and on most nights, a clear view of distant galaxies too. We spent many a happy hour, lying on the sunbeds at the beach, in total darkness, stargazing and being rewarded with a couple of shooting stars on more than one occasion!
I should mention something about dolphin spotting in Paleochora before I finish this review!? Myth or legend? Dolphin spotter boat trip agents will tell you these beautiful creatures do exist near the shore......
We booked a trip but of course it was postponed........determined as I was to go further out to explore the beautiful sea, I stopped a local fisherman on the quay at Paleochora during our first week and he agreed to take us out for the afternoon. The elusive dolphins were forgotten as he showed me how to load bait onto a traditional fishing reel and we toured the bay in front of IOS and it really is just as beautiful from that view too! The fisherman spoke no English and we don't speak Greek but the language of mime combined with lots of smiles meant he quickly understood we wanted to go swimming! He took the boat into a small bay, dropped anchor and then kicked his crocs off to join us in the sea for a dip before we headed back to Paleochora, munching those exquisite tomatoes on the way!
IOS will always hold a special place in our hearts and it is a place to fall in love with. The kindness of the owners combined with the stunning views and utter peace of such a beautiful room means I recommend this unreservedly. We look forward to returning one day in the future.
